>> reporter: tonight, torrential rain, dangerous winds, and tornados tearing through the south. reports of at least six tornados in alabama, georgia, and texas. including this one appearing to touch down in south georgia. warnings continued in several states throughout the afternoon. >> we've got a lot of lightning strikes across the area. so, definitely stay away from those windows. >> reporter: the wall to this office in alabama, gone, now lying next to the building. while inside, debris is scattered throughout the cubicles. >> trailer started wobbling real bad, so we had to hunker down and try to ride it out. >> reporter: in louisiana, downed trees piling up and mangled power lines. heavy rain in the region not just causing a flood risk, but slowing down traffic on major highways. on this interstate in arkansas, pounding rain and damaging winds limiting visibility. tens of millions at risk for severe weather tonight from texas to florida.
problem as you just heard from authorities, the biggest problem to come in the form of both storm surge and pounding rain. florida's governor said just moments ago the surge has hit 1. we are watching that closely. we have correspondents stationed all over florida tonight. we will bring you the best video, the live images, and all of the video through the day showing the force of this storm and we will speak live with lawmakers and emergency officials throughout the hour. correspondent will nunley of fox weather is in fort myers, florida tonight. still getting battered by hurricane ian. will? >> and, bret, no doubt. you are looking on with misbelief unimaginable emergency taking place across the state of florida. we are about 10 minutes outside of the immediately downtown fort myers. we had to evacuate because of the storm surge likely coming in there. in that 1.3 million people without power. that figure you just quoted there equates to easily 2 million individuals going through this without power. and we just started receiving
fiona has strength zwroend a category 4 hurricane with wind gusts of 155 miles per hour in the turks and caicos. but the caribbean island is still feeling the sheer force of the storm with damaging winds, pounding rain. let's get right to meteorologist pedram javaheri. pedram, gosh, that does not look good behind you. how bad is it going to get? >> the storm is going to strengthen. it is going to get larger as it approaches farther across the north. for areas across the turks and caicos, the worst is coming to an end. talking about a cloud field from the northern fringe to southern fringe with a span that expands 560 miles. from the northern tier of alaska to the southern tier of alaska, that's how large of a storm we're talking about. look at how organized and
expected today. and pedram javaheri is joining us. feels like every time i talk t you we're talking about the flooding and pounding rain. >> yeah, i think that some light at the end of the tunnel at least going into friday possibly getting a break across the region . in could be some thunderstorms this afternoon that could bring in heavy rainfall. and you notice the widespread coverage, frontal boundary in place that has prompted all the wet weather, it is still there. it is weakening rather quickly. and then we expect floodiminish.
dangerous situation for parts of the u.s. tornado watches have been issued in at least nine states. the national weather service has been busy issuing dozens of warnings for twisters and hurricane-force wind gusts. tornadoes have already hit in arkansas. rescue teams were deployed after an ef2 tornado struck. the damage is significant. more than 100,000 are without power tonight from texas to tennessee. and that number is expected to grow. the line of storms will move east tonight, and the threat continues through thursday morning. and cbs' janet shamlian is on the ground in memphis, tennessee, with the threat tonight. good evening, janet. >> reporter: norah, good evening. these storms are hitting hard right now. we hear that eerie sound of those tornado warning sirens right here in memphis, and the same thing is happening all across this region. >> oh, my god! >> reporter: severe storms battering the south tonight, millions in the path of punishing winds, pounding rain,
been a tough 48 hours or so for manville. i've been watching you reporting all day long. each time you're in a new location shining a light on another tough tragic story. they've been dealing with historic flooding and several building explosions. what's the situation there right now? how are people coping with everything that happened? >> so we're trying to get a lay of the land here in manville. there's a lot of different areas that were affected by the flooding here of the last 48 hours or so. one of the reasons is because this town is surrounded on three sides by two rivers and a stream. so every time they have a lot of rain and storm, those areas of water, those bodies of water overflow and then, of course, you had that pounding rain for two hours straight from ida. that's what caused such massive flooding. a lot of the folks here have seen significant flooding in their homes. this man's home was flooded four separate times but he has never seen anything as bad as this.
water, fuel and still without power indefinitely. that is what the president is likely to witness when he travels through laplace and some surrounding areas here. we have no definite timetable on when some major relief will get to these areas. we heard from officials who said while the state did give them some help in the past couple of days, it's been a little water, a few tarps and that doesn't go where it needs to for the long road to recovery ahead. this was an incredible storm that will be remembered for many years to come. not only bringing the 140-mile-per-hour winds but just putting so much rain into those communities that have now been left flooded and left countless homeless. >> looking at video there when president biden arrived in louisiana speaking with both republican senator cassidy and democratic governor edwards. yasmin, in the northeast it's
this grog back down to a tropical system and turning into an area of low pressure by tomorrow evening. then it's the tennessee valley, ohio valley, mid-atlantic dealing with that dumping rain, but winds will start to die down. the flood threat, the storm surge is still an issue. some totals from nashville to new york city, we're talking about 5 to 10 inches. the problem for tonight, now it's dark, and we are going to see very large areas that will be dealing with tropical storm warnings. now they're starting to flood into areas of mississippi. i expect parts of south georgia to get into this. also oklahoma into arkansas. so even though the category is starting to go down and will probably turn into a tropical system from day one across cuba, this system has dropped copious amounts of rain and that's what it's going to continue to do through thursday. joshua? >> thank you, janessa.
