The Hungry Black Man Announces International Black Food & Wine Festival in Miami

"It's going to be a celebration of the Black diaspora," he tells
New Times. "You have low country and Midwestern. You go down to Louisiana and there's Creole. There's even a Mexican mashup in the Mississippi Delta. The beauty of the International Black Food & Wine Festival is that there are so many cultures to highlight."
Smith, whose Hungry Black Man site covers Black cuisine in Chicago, Detroit, Atlanta, New Orleans, Austin, Montgomery, and Orlando, as well as Miami, says that he was looking for a way to celebrate all those unique food styles.
"In Black culture, there are cooks and chefs and confectioners and influences that Black America loves. We have so much more than Marcus Samuelsson," he says, though he's quick to add that the chef and partner in Red Rooster Overtown is working hard to bring Black chefs to the forefront of the culinary scene.

José Andrés on Changing the World Through the Power of Food

Most recently, WCK has worked to feed people who were left without jobs during COVID, with an emphasis on the culinary community. Last year, before it even opened, Red Rooster Overtown partnered with WCK and Food Rescue US to serve meals to Miamians during the pandemic.
The chef and humanitarian will appear virtually tonight (Monday, May 17) at the Broward College Speaker Series. The topic, "Changing the World Through the Power of Food" will address how everyone can help end hunger by starting with a simple gesture.
In the meantime,
New Times checked in with Andrés, hoping to pick up some hints as to how Miamians can help feed their neighbors.

Ch'i in Brickell Offers $1,000 Bonuses to New Employees | New Times Broward-Palm Beach

Few strings are attached. New employees must be hired before Ch'i opens and they must work at least 90 days to earn the bonus.
Emi Guerra, cofounder of Breakwater Hospitality Group and a partner in Ch'i, says the shortage of hospitality-industry workers isn't limited to Miami. "It's really a national problem. Everyone in the hospitality industry speaks to each other, and this is a universal problem."
Guerra says that when the pandemic hit, employees at restaurants, bars, clubs, and hotels were the hardest hit. Some filed for unemployment and are still collecting, while others have moved on to other cities or other jobs. "People had to make career changes. That's something to do with the lack of talented candidates."

Sommelier Allegra Angelo has seemingly lived nine lives — everywhere from the West Coast to the Northeast — before settling in Miami. Since 2019, her love of wine, food, and community is on display at Vinya Wines, where she works alongside founder Nicholas Garcia as in-house sommelier. Angelo has been honing her craft for 15 years, developing more than 20 unique wine-and-spirit programs across the nation and working with local staples, including Mignonette, Stiltsville Fish Bar, and Café La Trova. Angelo's work doesn’t end in the dining room — while serving as sommelier for La Mar and Mandarin Oriental, she worked wine harvests in Burgundy, Tuscany, and Spain. She has passed all levels of the Master Sommelier Exam and is preparing to retake the tasting portion this year — a top honor for any wine pro. During COVID, Angelo has been conducting Zoom wine tastings that accompany curated (and themed) wine selections.

After Two Pandemic Postponements, Opening A Restaurant During A Recession And A Reckoning

Chef Marcus Samuelsson opened Red Rooster Overtown in December 2020 after having to twice postpone serving diners because of the pandemic.
Star chef Marcus Samuelsson was determined to open a new restaurant in South Florida, even during a recession.
The business climate for restaurants was much different when star chef Marcus Samuelsson began the process that would result in opening his first South Florida location.
In 2016 the economy was booming. Unemployment had been falling for years. It was below five percent in Miami-Dade County. Incomes were rising and tourism was red hot.
By the time Red Rooster Overtown finally opened for paying diners on Dec. 3, 2020 the local unemployment rate would be the second highest in the state, tens of thousands of hospitality jobs would disappear, tourism would be on life-support, and countless restaurants would be closed — many for good.
