>> announcer: this is cnn breaking news. we're back with breaking news. the autopsy results for brian laundrie are in. he was the fiance of gaby petito who went missing for weeks after her disappearance and death. jean, what did this autopsy find? >> reporter: we just spoke with the attorney for the brian laundrie family and he tells us that the laundries were informed by the authorities that brian died by a gunshot wound to the head, so the cause o df death, gunshot wound, and obviously the manner of death was suicide. so, there is a quote from the family, chris and roberta are still mourning the loss of their son. they're hopeful these findings bring closure to both families. now, we don't know how he got in possession of a gun. i mean, if you look at the facts, if you remember, very

police in florida now admit to a serious mistake during their surveillance of brian laundrie. they mistook brian's mother roberta for him. now it happened in the days after laundrie's fiance gabby petito was reported missing but before her body was found in a national forest in wyoming. laundrie's remains were found just last week in a nature reserve near his family's florida home. cnn correspondent nick neri noins us from north port, florida, with details. nick, how did this mix-up happen? >> reporter: you know, at a time when the whole world was watching the north port police department, when they needed to be perfect, they simply put dropped the ball in their surveillance of him. this took place, according to police, in the middle of september when laundrie had yet to be named a person of interest, but they found his actions suspicious enough that
he was the only person of interest in the killing of gabby petito and now a waterlogged notebook found near brian laundrie's remains might be the only thing that could answer some key questions. investigators say the notebook is possibly salvageable and they're letting it dry out before opening it. at the same time, the forensic anthropologist is studying laundrie's remains, trying to find out how he died. in a new interview, the family attorney is revealing what could be critical clues about the last moment he was seen alive. >> brian had been extremely upset. chris and roberta were very concerned about him. they expressed to me when he walked out the door that evening, they wished they could have stopped him. prevented him from going out, but he was intent on leaving and chris said to me, you know, in hindsight, i know i couldn't stop him. i just wish i could have. >> did brian tell the laundries anything about what happened to
salvageable. we don't know what is in it, but it is possible he wrote something to give an indication of his state of mind or maybe about something that he had or hadn't done. the parents are not talking about brian laundrie's state of mind, but the lawyer is. he spoke to wabc and he was asked about brian's state of mind, and this is what he said. >> chris and roberta knew that their son brian was grieving. they knew he was so upset and, you know, they just couldn't control that he was leaving and he left. he walked out the door, and chris has said to me, i wish i could have stopped him but i couldn't. >> reporter: and the timing of this is key because if he was grieving on september 13th, remember, there hadn't been a homicide reported yet. gabby petito's remains hadn't been found yet, so what was he grieving about, what did he know and what did he share with his parents. the family lawyer was asked about that "good morning america" this morning, what, if anything, brian laundrie told his parents.
