(KAIT) - Parts of Northeast Arkansas received a visit from a U.S. Senator Thursday. Sen. John Boozman met with leaders in multiple Region 8 counties. Sen. Boozman stopped in four cities in the area Thursday. His first stop was at Paragould High School for National Teacher Appreciation Week, touring the school’s agriculture, band, and JROTC facilities while meeting with teachers and faculty members. Then, it was on to Clay County, touring historical sights in Piggott and meeting with county officials in Corning to discuss the need for broadband.

So she reached out to a local community action program for help and is waiting to get a provided hot spot, which she hopes will be fast and reliable enough for her school work.
An omnibus bill that addressed broadband accessibility was signed into law on Dec. 28, 2020. The package garnered bipartisan support and legislation headed by U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.), who serves as the co-chair of the Senate Broadband Caucus. The provisions include funding to support students with financial limitations in need of high-speed internet access â based off of Klobucharâs Supporting Connectivity for Higher Education Students in Need Act â and funding to implement the Broadband Deployment Accuracy and Technological Availability Act, which aims to improve the Federal Communications Commissionâs broadband availability maps, according to a release. Access to high-speed internet is an issue that dominates conversation in rural Minnesota. Local legislators like Minnesota state Sen. Torrey Westrom (R-District 12) campaigned on the importance of rural broadband in 2020.
