goshg. i m thomas roberts. it s monday january 12th. welcome to way too early. what a good show it was last night the golden globes. we got a round-up of the winners and losers coming up later on. we want to begin this morning with a lot of serious news to cover, we start in france the largest demonstration ever in that country s history, between 1.2 million and 1.6 million people rallied in paris to stand reunited after last week s attacks left 17 people dead. a total 3.7 million people took part in demonstrations across the country. many holding up editorial cartoons or signs reading je suis charlie. french president francois hollande saying today france is the capital of the world. israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu, mahmoud abbas were among those standing arm and arm with fron tsai hollande. the obama administration is facing strong criticism for not sending a top-level official. attorney general eric holder was in paris for an anteterrorism summit but di ....
and susan glaser of the new yorker. so good to have you on and it is only monday and we have a week worth of news already. good evening to both of you. we are told this agreement would cover 55 miles of new barrier. i don t know. he may get fencing for all of this? by the way, 55 miles pretty much complete the secure fence act which authorized the barrier on the pedestrian border. they were at 650 miles. this completes it. when was that? 2006. i was a cosponsor of that bill, 2006. that 700 miles figure was arrived after exhausted consultation with experts. the bottom line is donald trump wants barrier, democrats want fewer detention beds. donald trump wants to get but he s not willing to give. so the democrats apparently dropped their demand to cap the number of detention beds at 34,000, we have 34500 detention beds currently. they dropped the min and given less barrier. that s the deal. u i suspect if the president signs this and i don t know if he will. he ....
a light to south africa. our grands tour of arts on water and land. and this is a 1st my 1st time swimming in a major waterway in the middle of a city i can t wait but 1st i want to find out a bit more about this urban reverse swimming trend. the rhine in basel or father rhine as it s often called in german is the specially popular for urban swimming from it s source high up in the swiss alps that flows through half of europe river swimming has a long tradition here but being more used to pools and lakes it s quite an adventure for me in this sweltering summer people are talking about the concept of urban swimming in fifty s all over europe and as a former swimmer myself of course i m fascinated by this concept because up there. really done it. sure is here everyone seems to be doing it locals wade fearlessly into the chilly 20 degree current even with kids in tow they kind of swim downstream to emerge from the water as if we born easy right and you shouldn t underestim ....
