were having at a time when there was a great deal of litigation going on involving the subpostmasters and at a time as well when journalists were realising that something was up. asking persistent questions, trying to get information. in some cases trying to get hold of what should have been fairly standard data and not getting the replies they wanted. it does seem from these e—mails that the advice that mr williams was giving was dismissive of their concerns, dismissive of the subpostmasterssubpostmasters themselves and journalists asking themselves and journalists asking the questions. mr williams has apologised doing today's proceeded, he said he was sorry if he had caused any harm. but there was also questions about whether he had actually admitted to causing harm. there was a key admission, he stated that when looking at a report from consultants in 2014 he missed an item about how the horizon system

"if they aren't happy with horizon, they can leave the network," he wrote. when a sub postmaster raised concerns, mr williams said, "generally, my view is this guy is a bluffer." as for bbc media requests about the growing scandal, he called them puerile and getting ridiculous. how key documents are disclosed has been a big theme in this inquiry. he was sent this email by an external solicitor about how to deal with a defence request for post office investigation guidelines. The Post Office chief has insisted he would stand by more than half of prosecutions of postmasters convicted over the Horizon IT scandal, a newly released letter reveals.

from post office managers, could access or alter horizon records, meaning the blame for mistakes could only rest with subpostmasters. a judge later found that was untrue. so, next question — did fujitsu employees help cover up faults with the system? in 2019, the court of appeal found there were defects in the fujitsu system. the post office subsequently agreed to pay compensation to over 500 subpostmasters and mistresses. the question for fujitsu — the company built a system that failed. will it be paying compensation? the horizon system is still place — the post office paid an additional £100 million to extend the contract till the end of next year. fujitsu has continued to win other government contracts with hmrc, the mod, the home office and others, worth billions of pounds. this begs the question — should fujitsu be trusted with delivering key services? well, the european boss of fujitsu faces mps at 11:30am tomorrow morning.

was responsible for the shortfalls. in courts in england and wales, evidence produced by computers is treated as reliable unless other evidence suggests otherwise. we know that hundreds of subpostmasters were wrongly prosecuted. in those prosecutions the post office relied on the presumption in law that the computers were operating correctly. in 2006, i was taken to the high court and found liable for a loss in my post office accounts, and that was because the assumption of the computer working correctly, and i didn't have the proof or the knowledge or the skills to prove otherwise. now, newsnight has learnt that in 2020, a group of it and legal experts raised concerns about that presumption with the government, saying that it could lead to further miscarriages ofjustice. the document, signed by several professors and barristers, were sent to alex chalk, the nowjustice secretary, but back then a junior minister, and it spells out a clear argument for a change in the

in 2019, a civil case against the post office took place. the high court ruled that the horizon it system was faulty. thejudgment said... mr bates, that has been put to you... lawyers say the implication from the judge was that the approach to disclosure, the legal process of making documentary evidence and records from computers available to defendants in legal proceedings, was unsatisfactory. the post office withheld from disclosure to those it prosecuted that there had been problems with bugs, errors and defects in the horizon system. this meant subpostmasters were unable to use that information to challenge that horizon was working properly, as the post office alleged, and that horizon itself
