RAYMOND HENDLER: RAYMOND BY RAYMOND (PAINTINGS 1957-1967)
NEW YORK, NEW YORK, June 29, 2021—Berry Campbell is pleased to announce its fourth exhibition of paintings by Raymond Hendler (1923-1998).
Raymond Hendler: Raymond by Raymond (Paintings 1957-1967) features paintings created between 1957 and 1967, a transitional period for Hendler in which the artist moved away from an Abstract Expressionist mode and employed a more stylized line, producing distinct shapes and symbols. The exhibition is accompanied by a 16-page catalogue with an essay written by Phyllis Braff.

Philip Guston's Peculiar History Lesson

You might remember that a retrospective of the paintings of Philip Guston was planned to open last June at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, and would then have traveled to Houston, London, and Boston. When the Covid-19 pandemic forced the museum to close, a new tour schedule was set: The show would open at the Tate Modern in London in February 2021, with dates in Washington, Boston, and Houston to follow.
BOOKS IN REVIEW
By Robert Storr
If all had gone well, I might have flown to London to see that show and write about it. But the Tate is closed again, and I’m not flying anywhere, thank you. Besides, the National Gallery and its sister institutions chose to put off the Guston show until 2024—and then, after an uproar, until 2022. This is not the time or place to thrash out the rights and wrongs of the museums’ decisions and redecisions, or of the objections many of us raised to those decisions. But I wish I had those paintings to look at now. Their disabused self-interrogation seems more necessary than ever these days.

Editorial: Redistricting should be about NM voters, not party, Mr. Speaker » Albuquerque Journal

Oops, he’s done it again.
In November, the day after Democrats retained super-majorities in both houses of the state Legislature, House Speaker Brian Egolf, D-Santa Fe, told reporters the 2020 election would be the last one with a 2nd Congressional District map resembling current boundaries. “So next time it’ll be a different district, and we’ll have to see what that means for Republican chances to hold it,” he said.
The implication? U.S. Rep. Yvette Herrell was the only Republican to win a major election in New Mexico last year, and Egolf’s lust for one-party domination was thwarted when Democrats didn’t run the table. The comments were offensive to fellow Democrats, several of whom wrote the Journal. “As a registered Democrat, I was appalled,” Thomas Hess of Albuquerque wrote. “Democrats hold as core values protecting inclusivity and guarding against voter suppression.”
