No discussion of Cleveland's punk scene would be complete without a chapter on Peter Laughner, who helped start half a dozen bands, including Rocket from the Tombs and Pere Ubu. And yet, Laughner, who died at age 24, has not received that chapter, really, until now. A new 5-disc box set retrospective by Smog Veil Records has been released, an event that sent PKM's Todd McGovern in search of the Peter Laughner chapter, using the voices of many who knew Peter well, including Cheetah Chrome, Miriam Linna, Robert Kidney, Anton Fier, David Thomas, and others.

6 hours ago Punknews.org's They Might Be Giants fan podcast This Might Be A Podcast, hosted by long-time Punknews contributor Greg Simpson, is doing a series of paid-download charity episodes with all money going to one of Greg's 5th grade student who is battling brain cancer, the money will go towards the student's medical bills, travel expenses and lodging required for the child's treatment. The series will include episodes from Mike Park, Justin McElroy, Allie Goertz, former TMBG rhythm section Brian Doherty and Tony Maimone (who is also formerly Pere Ubu), and current TMBG bassist Danny Weinkauf. The first episode is available now for download for $3 or more on the podcast's bandcamp page.

Bob Mould – “See a Little Light” (1989) After the disintegration of Hüsker Dü, Bob Mould retreated to rural Minnesota to plot his first solo album. The highly polished, largely acoustic Workbook was a radical departure from the raw and edgy rock he’d been known for in his prior band. His songwriting talents were maturing and he delivered a strong collection of melodic, introspective acoustic rock. He drafted Pere Ubu rhythm section Anton Fier and Tony Maimone to play on the album. The first single was “See a Little Light”, an upbeat charmer that finds Mould exploring a melodic side to his writing that he’d only hinted at in Hüsker Dü. Despite the song’s sunny disposition, with a soaring chorus, jangly guitar, and the great Jane Scarpantoni providing a beautiful undertow of cello, the song finds Mould at the moment of realization that a relationship is doomed and a lover is going to leave.
