The founder of Tamarind Restaurant Group, Supichai “Charlie” Niyomkul, died on April 5 at age 70 due to complications from Covid-19. He is remembered for his endless smile, his dedication to his family, and the popular Thai restaurants he leaves behind.
Widely credited for introducing Thai fine dining to Atlanta, Niyomkul immigrated to the U.S. in 1971, working his way from bartender to server and even riverboat captain in New York City. He and his wife, Nantha “Nan” Niyomkul, opened their first restaurant, Tamarind Thai Cuisine, nearly 20 years later on the Upper East Side, attracting celebrity regulars like Brooke Shields and Sidney Poitier.

‘This is the painting that, many years ago, made me fall in love with Veronese. It is a piece of pure theatre, an image that plays in clever ways with the viewer. It is a painting about the young handsome man in white (who is he?) and his choice.
‘But it is also an astute composition where the man and the viewer compete in terms of what they understand of the two flanking allegorical figures.

For the last 100 years, stepping into the exquisitely preserved rooms of the Frick Collection’s mansion on New York’s Fifth Avenue was like entering a gilded time capsule.
It was both the draw of the museum, which is largely unchanged since it opened in 1935, and a flaw: Taken all at once, many of the spectacular bronzes, delicate Sèvres porcelain, and even masterpieces by Goya and Rembrandt drifted uncomfortably close to decoration, the collection’s many superlative parts subsumed into a larger, sumptuous whole.

Before the Frick Collection closed last year for a $160m renovation and expansion, its European paintings, sculpture and decorative arts had largely remained where the industrialist Henry Clay Frick first placed them in 1915 in his sumptuous East 70th Street mansion. Now stripped from their Gilded Age surroundings, highlights of the museum’s collection are going on view for the next two years a few blocks uptown on Madison Avenue at the Whitney Museum of American Art’s former home (most recently occupied by the Met Breuer).
