Marie-Eve Bouchard

I received a B.A. in International Studies and Modern Languages and a Masters in Linguistics from Laval University. In 2017, I completed my PhD in the Department of Linguistics at New York University, with a research project that investigated the emerging variety of Portuguese spoken in São Tomé and Príncipe. Before joining UBC, I was a researcher in the Department of Romance Studies and Classics at Stockholm University with a postdoctoral fellowship from the Swedish Wenner-Gren Foundations.
I am an anthropologically oriented sociolinguist, and I tend to enjoy the blurred space between these two fields.

Heidelberg University: OLYMPIA MORATA PROGRAMME: FUNDING FOR FOUR JUNIOR FEMALE RESEARCHERS

Share
The Olympia Morata Programme of Heidelberg University is funding four junior female researchers working on their postdoctoral or comparable qualifications. After a successful review of their applications, Dr Laura Schmidt (psychology), Dr Lisa Baumann (biology), Dr Julia Bauer (medical physics), and Dr Giulia Pelillo-Hestermeyer (Romance studies) have been selected as award recipients. The goal of the university is to increasingly attract women to university and scientific careers.
Dr Laura Schmidt works at the Institute of Psychology in the research unit “health psychology” on health-related behaviour over the entire life span. Her postdoctoral project focuses on practical approaches intended to promote health-related behaviour and well-being through technology-based interventions and psychological techniques on behaviour modification.

Teaching assistant award winners encourage new perspectives on learning

The Center for Teaching Innovation (CTI) has selected doctoral students Giulia Andreoni and Vasilis Charisopoulos as recipients of the 2020-2021 Cornelia Ye Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award.
“Their commitment to mentoring and guiding their students beyond the classroom and engaging their students with the Cornell community to enhance learning is what stood out to the committee,” said Kim Kenyon, an associate director at the CTI and chair of the award selection committee.
Andreoni, from Rome, Italy, will receive her Ph.D. in Romance studies in the College of Arts and Sciences in May 2021. She has been a teaching assistant for a range of Italian courses at Cornell and instructor of record for several first-year writing seminars as well as the Languages Across the Curriculum program.

In solidarity with French academics targeted by the republic

In February 2021, French Higher Education, Research and Innovation Minister Frederique Vidal denounced what she calls 'Islamo-leftism' and its 'gangrene' effect on France [Sebastien Bozon/AFP]
We write to express our solidarity with the scholars, activists, and other knowledge producers who are targeted by the February 2021 statements by Frédérique Vidal, France’s minister of higher education, research, and innovation. In them, she denounced “Islamo-gauchisme” (Islamo-leftism) and its “gangrene” effect on France, and called for an inquiry into France’s national research organisation, the CNRS, and the university. The specific kinds of knowledge in question analyse and critique colonialism and racism, and support decolonial, antiracist, and anti-Islamophobia projects within the academy and on the streets. Vidal’s statements show the discomfort these challenges are causing the state, and hence the desire to repress them rather than engage them.
