TOKYO (Kyodo) -- The 2021 FINA Diving World Cup, the final Tokyo Olympic qualifying meet and a test event for this summer's games, began Saturday under strict coronavirus countermeasures that contrasted with a lack of discipline during practice.
In Saturday's practice at Tokyo Aquatics Centre, divers without masks crowded together as they formed lines to the diving boards and platforms, while coaches and others gathered at poolside. In competition, however, things will be different with divers required to take their turns going to the tower.

Film critic Peter Debruge's favorite film of 2020 has been widely available on Netflix since last January. Director Chung Mong-hong explains what the film says about his home country, and why this family drama is too universal to be overlooked.

Last February, just before the pandemic upended virtually everything about how the film industry operates, “Parasite” made history at the Academy Awards. The ingenious South Korean thriller became the first international film to “overcome the 1-inch-tall barrier of subtitles” and win best picture, as director Bong Joon Ho phrased it at the podium.

A Sun: Taiwan's heartbreaking epic and Oscar hopeful buried on Netflix

Set in Taipei, the captivating, 156-minute story follows the aftermath of that initial machete madness. Not so much the lost hand – that’s gone, along with the meal – but the family of A-Ho (Wu Chien-ho). Radish (Liu Kuan-ting) and A-Ho were supposed to frighten their target; to A-Ho’s horror, Radish wielded his weapon, and they’re both locked up for years. The fallout extends to A-Ho’s pregnant girlfriend (Wen Chen-ling); his secretive brother, A-Hao (Greg Han Hsu); and his heartbroken parents (Samantha Ko, Chen Yi-wen). The father disowns A-Ho, even asking the judge, “I hope you put him away to teach him some discipline.” When A-Ho leaves the juvenile detention centre, he’s fundamentally changed, but so are the people he tries to make amends with. “(The slashed hand) shocks the audience in the very beginning, and the rest of the film shows the audience what a normal family life is like,” Chung says. “Many things in life originate from unknown violence and accidents.”

Movie review: 'Plurality' - Taipei Times

Movie review: ‘Plurality’
Tony Yang capably portrays five characters stuck within one body in this action-packed, sci-fi crime-thriller, which has intriguing ideas but a script that feels too forced
By Han Cheung / Staff reporter
Touted as the Taiwanese version of M Night Shylaman’s 2016 Split, Plurality also deals with kidnappings and multiple personalities who vie for control of one body.
Tony Yang (楊祐寧) does a great job at portraying the distinct personas within him — despite their mannerisms being a bit exaggerated to distinguish them — and convincingly and single-handedly carries this action-packed, twist-filed thriller despite the flawed script filled with puzzling developments and improbable scenes.

Taiwan's Chung Mong-Hong on His Epic Oscar Hopeful 'A Sun'

Wu Chien-ho in 'A Sun'
Already streaming on Netflix, the director's vivid and novelistic crime drama has become a dark horse favorite in the best international film category among critics and tastemakers.
Taiwanese filmmaker Chung Mong-hong’s
A Sun takes the material of a young adult TV melodrama and infuses it with such patient artfulness that a masterfully crafted novel soon comes to feel like the form it most resembles.
The film explores the various personal and societal pressures a family of four endures after their youngest son is arrested for his part in a violent crime and sent to juvenile detention. The offender is the family's recidivist black sheep, perpetually living in the shadow of his overachieving older brother, who is their father's pride and bound for medical school. Shocking events eventually force a wrenching reevaluation of that hierarchy, but the film also achieves surprising moments of black comedy, while skillfully swerving in and out of the crime thriller genre. A pure cinematic experience throughout,
