The Paris Review - Ring around the Archive - The Paris Review

A jeweler appraises a ring, 1960. Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons.
I recently proposed to my girlfriend, and so I spent much of the past few years thinking about engagement rings. In Western culture, at least, the ring has taken on such symbolic significance that we casually and almost exclusively refer to a part of the human body in relation to its function as ring carrier—the one true purpose of the
digitus quartus. Spend enough time shopping for engagement rings and one might come to believe that every aspect of a person’s being exists only to honor the extra-human perfection that is the ring. But spend some time in

Translating Hong Kong and Taiwan: A Conversation between May Huang and Jenna Tang

Translating Hong Kong and Taiwan: A Conversation between May Huang and Jenna Tang
Jenna Tang, left, and May Huang.
In this interview, translators Jenna Tang and May Huang discuss their experiences translating contemporary literature in Chinese from Taiwan and Hong Kong. Their conversation touches on the diversity within the Chinese language, translating work that resists compartmentalization, publishing houses in the US and in East Asia, and breaking into the translation world as BIPOC women. Below the interview is a list of resources they’ve compiled for emerging translators working with Taiwan and Hong Kong literature.

May Huang (MH): Hi, Jenna! Thank you for inviting me to be in conversation with you. As emerging translators from Taiwan working in the US, we have a lot in common. We also both got into literary translation in college and received translation mentorships from ALTA. So to kick us off, I wanted to ask: what were your first translation experiences, and how did they inform your current approach to translation?

Translation as a Collaborative Mode: An Interview with Sarah Booker

Translation as a Collaborative Mode: An Interview with Sarah Booker
Sarah Booker
I met Sarah Booker virtually in 2018 when she spoke with a graduate student reading group about translating Cristina Rivera Garza's
The Iliac Crest. During her virtual visit, Booker was gracious enough to talk with us about her translation process, and I have kept an eye on her work ever since. In this interview, conducted over email, Booker tells WWB about what drew her to translation work, her praxis, and her vision for translation in public life.
Alex Aguayo (AA): Good morning, Sarah. To begin, could you tell me a little bit about yourself and how you became interested in literature and translation? What has your training been like?

King's School Hawford pupil Michelle enjoys sweet sound of success

MICHELLE Z, a Year 4 pupil at The King’s School Hawford, has been awarded a prestigious Silver prize in Season 3 of the London Young Musicians competition.
The international online music competition is open to all classical musical instruments and vocal, for young musicians aged 28 or under.
Michelle’s piano performance of Waltz in A minor, B.150 Op. Posth. by Frederic Chopin was submitted to the Young Talent Age 9 and under category.
It was the first time Michelle had entered the competition so she was naturally delighted to receive the news that she’d won a Silver prize.
Sophie Hughes, director of music and performance at King’s Hawford, said: “Michelle is an extremely talented musician and an absolute pleasure to teach. She has a natural flair for all aspects of our musical curriculum and enjoys participating in various musical groups and activities within school.
