A group of over 170 world leaders and Nobel Prize winners have urged United States President Joe Biden to support a waiver proposing to suspend rules of intellectual property rights for Covid-19 vaccines and treatments to boost global vaccination rates. India and South Africa had moved this proposal at the World Trade Organization in October.
The letter, released to the media on Wednesday, said that the World Trade Organization’s waiver was important to bring an end to the Covid-19 pandemic. It said that the vaccine and related technology should be shared openly which can be done by the World Health Organization’s Covid-19 Technology Access Pool.

Crowded environments and poor sanitation in factories and dormitories have led to the formation of clusters of infection, overwhelming public hospitals, ICUs, ventilators, and medical front-liners across the world. Going by the fresh waves, Covid-19 may continue to impact the world in 2021, too. Things may improve as the vaccination progresses but not before mid-summer. The time required to vaccinate the whole humanity is going to be too long, even if we ignore anti-vaxxers. No wonder, some experts suspect that it will be a couple of years before some semblance of normalcy returns.

("3TREES") was recently listed in the 2020 China Top 500 Companies for Patents, a ranking released by the Guangdong Enterprise Brand Promotion Association and Huafa Qixianqin Intellectual Property Economic Research Center.

Based on data from the Huafa Qixianqin Patent Evaluation System, the ranking evaluates firms in five areas: average patent value, total number of valid invention patents and new utility patents, number of inventors, number of international patent applications, and patent application duration. It is these extreme confinement effects that ‘enables us to do chemistry that we can’t do in traditional ways’, says Angela Grommet from the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel who recently wrote a review

After 35 years of research, chemists are now starting to unlock the potential of confinement by designing molecular cages that fold up long molecules into huge macrocycles, or creating cavities that can separate deuterium from hydrogen. In the future, confined spaces could rival enzymes in their ability to catalyse reactions or protect unstable species, turning them into useful reagents.
It all started with the discovery of carcerands more than three decades ago. Donald Cram wanted to take the chemistry of crown ethers – flat, circular molecules that can capture individual metal atoms on their inside – into the third dimension. In 1985, he functionalised big cyclic molecules so pairs of them could be brought together to form a capsule. Cram called these hollow cage molecules carcerands, from the Latin word for prison, because they could permanently entrap other smaller molecules such as argon and dimethylformamide.
