The Chicago Sky kicked off their 2021 season in dominant fashion, securing a 70-56 win over the Washington Mystics.
Candace Parker, the former WNBA MVP and reigning Defensive Player of the Year, impressed in her Sky debut. Making the return to her hometown team, Parker finished with 16 points, eight rebounds, four assists and three blocks. Kaleah Cooper led the Sky in scoring (19 points), adding on eight rebounds and two steals.
The Mystics were shorthanded in the matchup, playing without former MVP Elena Delle Donne and Myisha Hines-Allen. It was a disastrous night offensively, with the team shooting just 25% from the field and 13% from 3-point range.

From Naperville to Knoxville to LA and back again: Sky's Candace Parker is safe at home

In high school, Candace Parker couldn’t wait for Christmas to be over because that meant it was time to play in the Dundee-Crown holiday tournament.
If you got to the gym early enough, you could watch it transition from a quiet high school on a tree-lined suburban street in Carpentersville to a sporting venue straight from a movie. Think of ‘‘Hoosiers.’’
Anyone who has been around the Chicago-area prep basketball scene knows the setting. It’s a winter night so cold it steals your breath. Fluffy snowflakes are sticking to your eyelashes. Your car is parked far away from the gym doors.

The Chicago Sky and Washington Mystics are both expected to make deep playoff runs and will look to get off to a good start as they face each other to start the regular season. This scintillating matchup opens a doubleheader on ABC, Saturday at 1 p.m. ET.
Candace Parker, the Sky’s big offseason acquisition, has generated a lot of excitement but in the lead up to the regular season it was Gabby Williams’ season-long suspension and subsequent trade to the Los Angeles Sparks that has taken the headlines. Williams was likely to miss the season as she plays with the French national team over the summer. Her departure leaves a critical hole on the bench.

The Washington Mystics are facing the Chicago Sky in their regular-season opener. The Mystics will be without Delle Donne, Erica McCall, Myisha Hines-Allen and Alysha Clark, who is out for the season. Washington lost both of their pre-season games last week and seem to still be figuring things out as the final roster is narrowed down. The team waived guards Aislinn Konig and Lapresha Stanley Monday afternoon.

From one historic season to another, the WNBA’s 25th season is set to tip-off on May 14th. The league will commemorate the 25th season with a campaign, “Count It” and a distinguishing and purposeful 25th season logo. The WNBA will also celebrate the ways its players have shattered expectations and have stood at the forefront of advancement, inclusion, and social change for 25 years.
In the lead up to the season, WNBA.com will break down each team in the league. Next up: the Washington Mystics.
Just two seasons ago the Mystics were crowned WNBA champions for the first time in franchise history, and now they stand a chance at being one of the top teams in the league yet again. The return of Elena Delle Donne, Natasha Cloud and newcomer Tina Charles (who is bound to impact the game on both the offensive and defensive ends of the floor) brings a lot of promise to Washington.

WNBA 2021 Season Preview
As the 2021 WNBA season approaches, this article will attempt to give an overarching view of some of the year to come in the WNBA. After a unique 2020 campaign, we have another one on tap due to the Summer Olympics interruption in July, cutting the season from 34 to 32 games. This also means there will likely be players coming and going at various times to participate for their respective countries. Regardless, it should be another fun season ahead!

None of the writers in our panel believe the Mystics will win the WNBA championship this year, though it isn’t out of the question either. If anything, we’re thinking the Aces are the preseason favorites.

Steph: I see them losing in the semifinals. This year’s group is very good but I think some teams like the Lynx, Sky and Aces have strengthened so much in the offseason that it will be difficult to do better than them. Though I said it will be difficult for Washington to make the Finals, it will not be impossible.
