NEW YORK, NY
.-SFA Advisory, Lisa Schiff’s Tribeca outpost, announces its inaugural summer exhibition, Ridiculous Sublime, running through Labor Day. Featuring 50 international artists, Schiff transformed her permanent ground-floor office at 45 White Street into a temporary exhibition space as part of her commitment to exploring nascent tendencies which appear across the globe.
In 1757, Edmund Burke published A Philosophical Enquiry into the Origin of Our Ideas of the Sublime and Beautiful wherein he defined the sublime as an artistic effect productive of the strongest emotion the mind is capable of feeling. Elsewhere, the sublime has been used to describe a natural event that inspires awe and terror through sheer immensity. Beauty and awe are where the sublime in art usually lands, and often it consists of representations of Mother Nature with diminutive human figures or none at all. A certain penchant for this interpretation of the sublime has been seeping into some contemporary artistic practice as well as curated exhibitions from William Blake at Tate Britain to more recent gallery shows featuring Frederic Edwin Church and Charles E. Burchfield.

Walking down West 25th Street in New York’s Chelsea neighborhood, passersby can see colorful abstract paintings through the windows of Marlborough Gallery, a show by Iraqi-born painter Ahmed Alsoudani. The doors are open.
That alone may come as a surprise to many. “Once or twice a week, I hear people come in and say, ‘Oh, I can’t believe you are open,’” said director Diana Burroughs.

New Haggin Museum exhibit traces history of environmental movement

Visitors to Stockton’s Haggin Museum will be the first in the country to see a new collection that traces the history and impact of the environmental movement through art.
“The Long View | From Conservation to Sustainability | Works from the Bank of America Collection” is making its inaugural exhibition Thursday, May 6, at The Haggin, which reopened recently after a year of being mostly shuttered due to the pandemic.
Beginning in the mid-19th century, “The Long View” examines the evolution of humanity’s relationship with — and need to protect — the Earth and its inhabitants, and the artists that have played a role in shaping the environmental conversation, The Haggin said in a news release.
