Taking the title for his book from a quotation by English writer William Somerset Maugham, attorney Gary Johnson of St. Charles says his distinguished legal career included lots of good fortune.

In the highest-profile case of his career, lawyer Gary Johnson argued that a shoe from his defendant didn't match the shoe that kicked in the door of the Naperville home where a 10-year-old was kidnapped and later found murdered.

Do you remember Al Heist?
He played center field for the Cubs in 1960 and 1961. In 150 games, he batted .260/.338/.390. He hit 8 home runs in 555 plate appearances, including a walk-off grand slam against the Braves on April 15, 1961.
That was his second career homer. His first had come Sept. 9, 1960, at St. Louis, in his 26th game as a Cub. He played 15 before the season ended, for a total of 41.
Heist was
32 years, 286 days old when he made his Major League debut in a 6-0 loss at St. Louis on July 17, 1960, 2 days after the Braves traded him to the Cubs for Earl Averill and $30,000 to $35,000.

Top 5 seasons in White Sox history

share-square-367169
CHICAGO -- Here’s a look at the Top 5 seasons in White Sox history, along with a few White Sox teams who just missed.
1. 1917
The White Sox have won three World Series titles but have won 100 games exactly one time in franchise history -- a total reached via a 100-54-2 record in ’17. A team featuring catcher Ray Schalk, second baseman Eddie Collins, third baseman Buck Weaver and Shoeless Joe Jackson in the outfield beat the New York Giants in six games to claim baseball’s top prize. Eddie Cicotte stood No. 1 on the pitching staff with 28 wins, 29 complete games, a 1.53 ERA and seven shutouts, while Red Faber, Lefty Williams and Reb Russell also made strong mound contributions. Faber earned the wins in Games 2, 5 and 6 of the World Series and lost Game 4.

A Candidate-by-Candidate Look at the 2021 Hall of Fame Election Results

The following article is part of Jay Jaffe’s ongoing look at the candidates on the BBWAA 2021 Hall of Fame ballot. For a detailed introduction to this year’s ballot, and other candidates in the series, use the tool above; an introduction to JAWS can be found here. All WAR figures refer to the Baseball-Reference version unless otherwise indicated.
The surge via which the Baseball Writers Association of America elected a record 22 Hall of Fame candidates over a seven-year span is over, as the voters pitched a shutout on Tuesday, their second in the past decade, fourth since the return to annual balloting in 1966, and ninth since the Hall’s inception in 1936. Collectively the 401 voters who participated showed enough ambivalence towards the top four returning candidates — Curt Schilling, Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, and Omar Vizquel, all of whom have non-performance-related marks against them that were increasingly aired during the cycle — to keep them on the outside looking in, and that ambivalence spilled over to the other 21 candidates on the slate. The 5.87 votes per ballot was the lowest average since 2012, and the 14 blank ballots sent in was a record.

Tommy Lasorda (1927-2021) Bled Dodger Blue | FanGraphs Baseball

January 12, 2021
On the heels of a year in which a record seven Hall of Famers died, the baseball world couldn’t get a full week into 2021 without losing another. Tommy Lasorda, the charismatic and voluble manager who piloted the Dodgers to four National League pennants and two championships during a run of 19 full seasons (1977-95) and two partial ones, died of cardiopulmonary arrest on January 7.
The 93-year-old Lasorda had returned home earlier in the week after being hospitalized since mid-November due to a heart condition. He had been the oldest living Hall of Famer since Red Schoendienst passed away on June 6, 2018; that title now belongs to 89-year-old Willie Mays.
