Lawmakers Are Banning The 'Carolina Squat' But I'm Not Sure How I Feel About It. How About You?

North Carolina lawmakers passed a bill to impose major restrictions on the “Carolina Squat,” a phenomenon that involves jacking up the front of a truck or SUV while keeping the rear end low, causing the vehicle to look as though it’s “squatting.” It seems that most people hate the Carolina Squat trend, but I feel differently. I’m not sure what I think about this new bill. How about you?

Problematic and inefficient: House committee reveals condition of state-run liquor monopoly - Carolina Journal

A bill up for discussion in a House committee this week went surprisingly far to reveal the convoluted mess the state-run alcohol monopoly has become.
Lawmakers call House Bill 669 Distribute Alcohol Without Discrimination, although that title is vague and misleading. The bill offers a taste of the spoiling mash. Made from a set of draconian ideas dumped in a barrel more than 80 years ago.
Reps. Tim Moffitt, R-Henderson; John Szoka, R-Cumberland; Jake Johnson, R-Henderson; and Ben Moss., R-Richmond, are primary sponsors.
The bill, officially, is an act to prohibit discrimination and advantage in the distribution of spiritous liquor to local Alcoholic Beverage Control boards, of which there are 171. Some places, such as Wake and Mecklenburg counties, have one board apiece. Brunswick County has nine. Rockingham County, with just more than 90,000 people, has three.

The Melville family didn’t distance themselves from ownership of a local mountainside chalet for too long.
On Tuesday, a limited liability company controlled by Craig Melville acquired Snowmass Mountain Chalet for $10.5 million in a deal culminating after the nonprofit Challenge Aspen withdrew interest in buying the lodge.
Sales records at the Pitkin County Clerk & Recorder’s Office identify the buyer as Mountain Chalet Snowmass LLC and the seller as CA Loan I LLC.

The operators of Movieland7 in El Jebel confirmed Thursday the business has closed after three decades of showing motion pictures. They left open the possibility of re-opening but are advertising the seven-screen space for rent.
“We are greatly appreciative of the overwhelming support we’ve received from the Roaring Fork Valley’s communities over the past 30 years as the owner and operator of Movieland,” said Ben Moss, CEO of Connecticut-based theater chain Bow Tie Cinemas, in a statement given to The Aspen Times on Thursday. “During those 30 years, Movieland has never once closed its doors, even for a single day. The unfortunate and extreme effects of the coronavirus pandemic have obligated us to explore all possibilities for the future of the property, including re-opening as a Bow Tie Cinema at the appropriate time in the future or leasing the property to another movie theater operator.”

North Carolina is just beginning to see the impact the Thanksgiving holiday may have had on the state's coronavirus numbers. In a press conference Tuesday, North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Dr. Mandy Cohen said that she believes the numbers the state has seen thus far are just the beginning. It is likely the increase in COVID-19 cases reported over the last week reflect those that went to Thanksgiving gatherings already sick. Throughout the next week, the state's numbers will start to reflect those that did not know they were sick with the virus until after attending those holiday gatherings. This week, the state continuously set record numbers of coronavirus cases and hospitalizations. The case counts, in addition to a positive test rate of 10.5%, prompted Sec. Cohen to urge North Carolinians to consider canceling any remaining travel plans and to keep any gatherings small and outdoors this holiday season.
