Legionnaire: Avoid domestic use of military at all costs

Legionnaire: Avoid domestic use of military at all costs

January 6, 2021 saw one of the darkest moments of domestic history in America. Regardless of your politics, it was a day that, quoting President Roosevelt, “…will live in infamy”.
There have been calls over the last months of President Trump’s term that it may be necessary to remove him through use of the military, or more recently, that the military should have been called out to control the insurrectionists at the Capitol on January 6. I think I can speak for many of my fellow veterans and those on active duty, that this is the last thing that America needed or wanted.

Opinion: Push hard and fast

Grassroots progressives put Biden in the White House… but what do we get for that?
Nothing guaranteed, but at least he gives us the possibility of winning some progressive policies. Unlike when Clinton and Obama fleetingly raised hopes in 1992 and 2008 that progress was possible — only to disappoint us — two new factors give progressive proposals a greater chance this time. First, is Biden himself. A core part of his political makeup is that he’s Joe Labor, coming to the job with a genuine affinity for working stiffs. For Biden, labor rights are not wonkish issues, but about showing gut-level respect for working families, actually caring about the well-being of workers.

Interior reverses Land and Water Conservation Fund restrictions

ROB CHANEY
The rules governing federal Land and Water Conservation Fund spending took another turn on Thursday when Biden administration officials undid some last-minute policies installed under the Trump administration.
“Interior’s actions today affirm our support for one of America’s most successful and popular conservation programs,” Interior Department Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary Shannon Estenoz said. “We look forward to strengthening this successful program to ensure that all communities — from hikers and sportsmen to urban and underserved communities — have access to nature and the great outdoors.”
Last August, Congress included $900 million in annual mandatory funding for LWCF in the Great American Outdoors Act, essentially doubling the amount of money available to protect landscapes ranging from wildlife habitat to city playgrounds.

Turnovers prove to be tipping point as Mitchell Kernels can't keep pace with Roosevelt

Feb. 12—SIOUX FALLS — It has been a while since Mitchell High School was in a pressure-packed game in a hostile environment. In the first game of a five-game stretch that the Class AA No. 4 Kernels will see four teams ranked in the South Dakota prep media poll, they largely stepped up to the moment against fifth-ranked Sioux Falls Roosevelt Thursday. But pressure put them in stretches of ...

Hake's Feb. 24-25 auction features original comic art, historical/political memorabilia, baseball... - Artwire Press Release from ArtfixDaily.com

YORK, Pa. – Last September, Hake’s Auctions set world record prices for pop-culture memorabilia and broke their own house records for sell-through rate, the number of registered bidders and the number of bids placed. Lightning could strike twice on February 24-25 when the Pennsylvania auction house hosts a 2,266-lot sale containing important political relics, Negro League baseball memorabilia, original comic art, exotic Star Wars and G.I. Joe figures, and the Michael Jordan sports card all fans dream of owning: a 1986-’87 Fleer #57 rookie card.
Hake’s was established in 1967 with political items as its foundation. The February sale continues that tradition, not only with the opening lot but also a magnificent Civil War treasure: a hand-painted 1860 Abraham Lincoln and Hannibal Hamlin “Wide Awake” parade banner with the mesmerizing image of a large human eye. The “Wide Awakes” were 36 young men from Hartford, Connecticut, who banded together to form a political action group. On March 5, 1860, after hearing Lincoln’s address in their hometown, the youthful activists formed a marching party to escort the future president to his accommodation for the night. Lincoln was so impressed by the spectacle, he started encouraging young people everywhere to follow the Wide Awakes’ example. Banners created and used by the Wide Awakes are almost non-existent, especially in private hands. A top highlight amongst the 500 political lots in the auction, the ultra-rare pre-Civil War textile will open with a $10,000 bid and no reserve.

Vocalist Mary Wilson, who co-founded the Supremes as a 15-year-old in a Detroit housing project and stayed with the fabled, hitmaking Motown Records trio until its dissolution in 1977,  died on Monday night at her home in Las Vegas. She was 76.
Wilson’s longtime publicist, Jay Schwartz, reported that she died suddenly. The circumstances of her death were not immediately revealed. Funeral services will be private because of COVID, he said, but there will be a public memorial later this year.
More from Variety
“I was extremely shocked and saddened to hear of the passing of a major member of the Motown family, Mary Wilson of the Supreme,” said Berry Gordy in a statement Monday night. “The Supremes were always known as the ‘sweethearts of Motown.’  Mary, along with Diana Ross and Florence Ballard, came to Motown in the early 1960s. After an unprecedented string of No. 1 hits, television and nightclub bookings, they opened doors for themselves, the other Motown acts, and many, many others. … I was always proud of Mary. She was quite a star in her own right and over the years continued to work hard to boost the legacy of the Supremes. Mary Wilson was extremely special to me. She was a trailblazer, a diva and will be deeply missed.”
