Its abundance of UNESCO World Heritage sites is one of them. It is one very prestigious list on which our state’s No. 1 ranking is a good thing. This comes up because last summer my wife and I visited San Antonio, Texas, for the first time. Our initial interest for traveling there was to see the Riverwalk. But, in the end, I was more intrigued by the city’s San Antonio Missions, a national historic park spread out over several miles. It includes the ruins of five Spanish churches and their fortress-like surroundings. The Alamo is one of them, but I found some of the other missions to be much more interesting.

The horrifying plague of dead birds in the southwestern US in late summer was caused by starvation, according to a new government report. Hundreds of thousands, possibly even millions of birds, died in Arizona and nearby states in August through early September. Many scientists blamed the devastating wildfires raging in the West at the time, but lab results from the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish rule out smoke poisoning. The blazes could have caused the birds to migrate early or alter their migratory patterns and deplete their energy reserves early. And, according to biologists with the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish, a surprise coldsnap in early September also likely added to the death toll.

Upon arriving in Port-au-Prince the greatest challenge was to read the internal logic of the city, as there were seemingly a number of systems operating simultaneously and without resolution. Traveling along any major route, moments of complete desertion suddenly yield to moments of dense commercial activity. In the commercial centers, various informal programs, often incompatible, flow into contiguous spaces as a means of adaptation to allow new merchants to enter the commercial sphere and compete to survive in a market where the merchant class is rampant. These abrupt transitions reveal the volatile state of the city as a result of transformations in the aftermath of civil unrest.
The five-member Athens, Georgia-based indie-rock band Easter Island broke up in 2013. The guitarist moved to Texas to pursue a master s degree in business, and the drummer quit to start a family. By 2014, Ryan Monahan, who was playing bass at the time and now plays guitar, and the band s singer and lyricist, Ethan Payne, discussed creating an album with just the two of them. As they began the process, they realized the songs were sounding like Easter Island songs, and they knew they needed to bring the whole band back together. They re-recruited keyboardist Asher Payne, Ethan s brother, and the group was resurrected.
