orleans saints player will smith. the trial of 29-year-old car del hayes went through the weekend after sunday's closing arguments. jurors found hayes guilty of manslaughter and attempted manslaughter for the wounding of smith's wife. they resided against a second-degree murder conviction which carries with it a life sentence. that said, hayes faces up to 40 years behind bars when he is sentenced in mid february. survivors are blaming shoddy construction for the collapse of a church in nigeria that killed at least 160 people. worshippers were inside the church saturday when the metal girders pell and the iron roof caved in. witnesses describe the gruesome after yath with blood and bodies scattered everywhere. also in africa and another church in egypt the scene of an apparent terror and the so-called elephant in the room that host t.j. miller refused to talk about on stage. but first, the powerful mother and child reunions behind bars. how one very special day for the families of incarcerated mothers is helping heal the wounds of the children they've left behind. you're watching "world news now." they are the often overlooked victims of incarceration, rarely even mentioned in the statistics. the children left behind by mothers behind bars. >> yeah, and we're taking an up close look at the powerful mother and child reunions that are helping to get these families back on track. we're up all "nightline" with abc's juju cheng. >> andrew lejac is raising four daughters alone but not by choice. >> she's missed christmas every year, the girls' birthdays. >> reporter: for three years worth of holidays and birthday their mom ruby has been in prison. tomorrow he and his girls will set out to visit. >> it can be rough when she's not here. when there's something exciting going on or something that happened that's painful or -- even for a little concert for me. >> reporter: 98 miles from home ruby is here, at the only women's prison in michigan serving a four-year sentence for home invasion. and i got hooked on cocaine pretty good and i started breaking into houses to feed my addiction. >> reporter: but mom's punishment is taking a toll on her kids. andrew is left to pick up the pieces until she's released next year. >> i'm missing out on my daughter beginning high school. i missed my youngest going to kindergarten. field trips. i mean, they're becoming young ladies. and i'm missing that. >> reporter: the girls are up early. >> grab the toothpaste. >> reporter: they can only afford to visit a few times a year. and this day is special. they'll get a few precious but fleeting hours with their mom outside the confines of the visitation room. it's part of a program designed to soften the damage done to kids when a parent is incarcerated. as they head toward michigan, mom ruby is at a prison workshop with 51 other inmates. the lucky few who through good behavior have qualified for the program. >> i'm giving you some homework to help you to be that mama. all right? >> reporter: here they're learning what it takes to be a good mother. this the first step of the one day with god camp, founded by scottie barnes, who herself grew up with a father in prison. >> their actions is what's brought them here. they've made mistakes. but i say it's like fixing an old piece of furniture. you have to take off the old paint, prepare it and put on new paint. >> andrew and ruby's girls are just four of the roughly 3 million american children with a parent behind bars. this month's statistic on new prisoners here tells the story. 60% suffered trauma. nearly 80% like ruby struggle with drugs or alcohol. perhaps most striking, reports that nearly 70% of inmates are themselves children of prisoners. >> how do you break that cycle? >> i want them to invest in their children's life and be honest with them, make them accountable so those children don't follow in those footsteps. >> reporter: but ruby's prison time may in the end be what saves her and her family. >> what do you see in her that's worth giving her another shot? >> her attitude now that she's been sober is she wants to prove to not only me but the kids and her friends and family that she's done her time, she's done with it and she's through. >> reporter: how has it changed your perspective being here? "i know for a fact i was going to get shot," hayes said. hayes claiming he heard a gunshot before pulling the trigger. although police say a gun fired in smith's car was never fired. >> the defense he gave in his own defense has been contradicted by third-party witnesses and it's also been contradicted by the forensic evidence. >> reporter: smith was an all pro in his playing career and a fan favorite. former teammates like quarterback drew brees showing their support throughout this emotional trial. >> our thanks to phillip. cardell hayes was also found guilty of attempted manslaughter and for wounding smith's wife. he faces up to 40 years in prison. he will be sentenced in february. >> many members of the saints there during the reading of the verdicts late last night. the other story we're following this morning, the winter storm that is working its way across the northern u.s. there are winter weather advisories in effect overnight in the great lakes region. with crews out trying to keep the roads open for the morning commute. >> a delta plane landing in detroit from buffalo slid off the runway as it made a turn. no injuries there. but already today dozens of flights have been canceled at chicago's airports and more in detroit. abc's richard cantu reports the entire region is taking it on the chin. >> how is chicago weathering the storm? >> folks in buffalo are like three to six, that's fine, no big deal. thanks to paul there. president-elect donald trump is dismissing a "washington post" report that russia used hackers to sway the election in his favor. a bipartisan group of senators is now calling for an investigation into allegations of russian interference. and 17 u.s. intelligence agencies had already blamed russia for the pre-election cyber attacks. but trump is rejecting those claims and pointing the finger at the democrats. >> i think it's ridiculous. i think it's just another excuse. i don't believe it. i think the democrats are putting it out because they suffered one of the greatest defeats in the history of politics in this country. >> "the new york times" is reporting that both the democratic and republican national committees were hacked but only information about the dnc was leaked. rnc chair and incoming white house chief of staff reince priebus insists no rnc systems were compromised. and trump is expected to decide on a secretary of state any day now. exxonmobil ceo rex tillerson has emerged as the likely pick. but questions are being raised by members of both parties about tillerson's deep ties to russia. tillerson says he's known vladimir putin for nearly 20 years and has a close relationship with him. trump sees that as a great advantage, calling tillerson a world-class player and a deal maker. a southern california man has been charged with a hate crime after a violent incident outside of a mosque in simi valley. police say john madison confronted worshippers outside of the mosque and then stabbed a man. they say the victim was targeted because of his religion. police are also looking for a second suspect who also may have been involved in the incident. about a dozen guests were injured in a fire at a michigan ski resort this weekend. it broke out in the main lodge of the born highlands resort sunday morning. there were more than 100 guests staying in the lodge at the time the entire resort and its slopes are now closed with the busiest time of the year approaching. and atf investigators have finished their work at the warehouse in oakland, california where 36 people died in that fire. new details about the investigation are expected to be revealed tomorrow during a news conference with atf and other agencies. a refrigerator has been ruled out as a cause of the fire, but agents still suspect it was something electrical. a former member of the "brady bunch" cast has been fired by a radio station after some anti-gay remarks. susan olsen used to co-host a political talk show on the digital station which is based in l.a. olsen played cindy brady on the legendary '70s tv show. she was fired after an online altercation with an openly gay actor. evidence posted online shows olsen apparently using an offensive term for gay men in a facebook message to that actor. okay. as many of us are busy with our holiday season routines, i just put my tree up yesterday -- actually, i had it put up for me. i can't do it. how about a reminder that our animal companions like to get in on the festivities as well?
