pretty darn good. >> thanks. >> "the lead" with jake tapper starts now. direct quote, stand your butt up then, quote, you stand your butt up. not a schoolyard. that was today in the united states senate. "the lead" starts right now. i'd love to do it right now. >> well stand your butt up then. >> you stand your butt up. >> stop it. >> heated exchanges on capitol hill. one in the senator and another in the house involving former house speaker kevin mccarthy and actual physical violence. and just down the block, a massive rally on the national mall with a goal. one rally attendee has a brother being held hostage by hamas. he'll join me ahead. plus an emergency request for an emergency protective order after leaked evidence in fulton county, georgia, shows co-defendants of donald trump explaining efforts to overturn georgia's 2020 election results with shocking new details that you have not heard before. welcome to the lead, i'm jake tapper. we're going to have much more on that massive rally in support of israel and against anti-semitism just ahead. you see images right there. but first, if you thought congressional republicans were maybe a little bit uncontrollable, as evidenced by this latest threat of yet another government shutdown, well, you ain't seen nothing yet. today brought actual republican on republican physical violence on the house side. and in the other capitol chamber, a republican senator threatened physical violence against a witness during a hearing. not a spoof. not a satire. not news reporters twisting them for our own nefarious ends. i'm dead serious. let's start with what happened in the supposedly more gentlemanly senate where the fist-a-cuffs were only theoretical and it was not actual battery. in the health and education and labor pensions committee chairpersoned by bernie sanders of vermont, this was a hearing called standing up against corporate greed how unions are improving the lives of families and in that hearing, the senate of oklahoma read a tweet from june, written by international brotherhood of teamsters general president sean o'brien, a tweet that said this. >> it said, greedy ceo who pretends likeize self-made. what a clown, fraud. always has been, always will be. quit the tough guy act and these senate hearings. you know where to find me. anyplace, any time, cowboy. so this is a time, this is a place. you want to run your mouth, we could be two consenting adults and finish this here. >> that is fine. perfect. >> would you love to do it then. >> well stand your butt up then. >> you stand your butt up then. >> sit down. you're a united states senator. now to the house, where republican congressman tim burchett said in one reporter witnesses with her own eyes kevin mccarthy elbowing burchett in the back. right in the kidneys, he said. burchett was one of eight republicans who voted to oust mccarthy from the speaker's chair. >> it was a clean shot to the kidneys and i turned back and there was kevin. he's a bully with $17 million and a security detail and the type of guy when you're a kid would throw a rock over the fence and run home and hide behind his momma's skirt. >> mccarthy who has lied about plenty of other things like for instance the 2020 election, denied shoving or elbowing burchett. it also just so happening that congressman adam kinzinger in his brand-new book writes that he, too, was pushed twice by mccarthy. what on earth is going on up there? let's bring in manu raju on capitol hill. manu, you know, the dysfunction among house republicans has been apparent to us for quite sometime. even on this day that the house is supposed to be united and vote to avoid a government shutdown. but physical violence and from a former speaker no less? >> this is all quite a scene, jake. and after the unprecedented vote to push out kevin mccarthy, but the tensions still remain and mccarthy feels he was treated unfairly. he told me just a few days ago he feels burchett was someone he was surprised at that voted him out and said that burchett is interested only in press, which is why he believes he had done just that. well, mccarthy responded to the allegation that burchett made that he essentially sucker punched him in the kidneys from behind and walked away. he said that did not happen that way. and in fact, mccarthy tried to make the case this was a narrow hallway in the capitol hill that he may have accidentally grazed him and continue to walk along the way and he didn't understand why bur clet was so mad claiming none of it was intentional. >> i hit someone, they would know i hit them. i would not elbow or hit them in a kidney. it is not a very big hallway. >> and then i asked him about the claim that he was still in pain. burchett told me moments afterwards that he was in pain still from that alleged hit and in his kidneys. he essentially mccarthy had shrugged it off and said come on, if he wants bring a trial lawyer. and also, jake, matt gaetz, who led the charge to push out mccarthy plans to file an ethic complain to force an investigation. mccarthy also brushed that off and said, matt gaetz, that is one place he belongs, in the ethics committee. >> we should know that our colleague brianna keilar asked ken buck about mccarthy denying this. and ken buck, congressman, a republican, said kevin mccarthy and lying is like peanut butter and jelly. now, about the near blows that erupted during that senate hearing of all places. what is mark wayne mullen, what does he have to say about that. >> he doesn't regret at it all. that is the exact question i put to him. do you regret that. you're a united states senator. he said he called me out and i was just answering the call and i said well you're a senator and he's the president of a union, i'll still a guy from oklahoma and he made clear that he was defiant and in comments he made to our colleague sam fossil. >> you don't do that and answer your mouth unless you answer the call. i didn't start it. i didn't go after him. i have no beef with the guy. >> and he said he has not spoken to republican leadership about this yet and mitch mcconnell said a gop leader was asked about these episodes an he said i don't view that as my responsibility to deal with. that is something that capitol police will have to deal with. jake. >> and i think the issue is doing it in the senate during a senate hearing. it is not so much responding to the union president, it is where he did it, right? >> yeah, absolutely. and he said that he was raised differently, jake. that is his explanation for why he said. we settle things differently from where i'm from in oklahoma. so he's not regretting what he said at all, jake. >> okay. manu raju, we're going to come back to you. this big house vote coming this hour much more important than all of the shenanigans, thank you so much. but let's talk about the shenanigans. sean o'brien, the president of the union, the international brotherhood of teamsters is here and i have to say, i'm sure your plenty strong. but markwayne mullin is a professional mma fighter. what went through your mind when he challenged you to a physical fight during a senate hearing? >> yeah, you know, what went through my mind was you're one of 100 of the most powerbful people in the country and you're asking like a kid in a schoolyard because you didn't get your way. he's one of the focused for changes in this way and we're definitely brought up differently. >> and you're tweeting like a 12-year-old. you're tweets, you're not a united states senator. and i get that you're tweeting is not the same thing as calling someone out during a senate hearing. but you know where to find me anyplace, any time, cowboys, making fun of him nor not being the tallest senator and represent 1.3 million workers. there is the tweet with your pink circling of the apple box he's standing on. do you think that is best serving, best representing the members of the teamsters union? >> his story is compelling but inaccurate. and hearing in march he started the whole thing by coming into looking at us and saying to me, i'm not afraid of physical confrontation. as a matter of fact i welcome it. that is what perpetuated the whole incident. never knew the man in my life. i was testifying in my first senate hearing and that is my first introduction to me. >> and you were at the hearing today, which is about how unions improve the lives of workers. are you afraid that that message was lost because of this? >> not at all. i mean we had some great dialogue about issues that affect working people and organizing, collective bargaining and unionizing america and there was a lot of different opinions and debate and it was great until mark wayne mullen decided to erupt. we do have a lot of difference of opinion on both sides but today's dialogue outside of what happened was fruitful productive and the one thing we're doing as a teamsters, i do represent 1.3 million members and i do it in the best interest of my members and we've been reaching across aisle to find common ground that could help working people throughout america and we're going to continue to do that and today mark chose to not act like a u.s. senator and he's going to have to pay the consequences toer that. >> what is the best thing the teamsters is working for right now that you're fighting for right now. >> we're fighting corporate america. we're closing the gap between ceo greed and what our members are being in their contracts. ups is a prime example. we have a $30 billion con track, the highest contract ever at ups and we're starting to take back what we've investing. think about how important teamsters were, essential works providing good and services during the pandemic. >> sean o'brien, good to see you. i wouldn't want to mess with you or senator mullen, to be quite honest. hold on. we're still talking to the camera. we'll escort you out in a second. we're standing by for a major house vote. this vote is expected this hour. and we're watching the rally on the mall. to announce the alarming rise in ant semitism and i'm talk to a man who is tending the rally. he has a brother being h held b hamas. stay with h us. you're looking live at pictures from washington, d.c. at the mall where thousands and thousands have gathered to denounce anti-semitism. and show support for israel in its war against hamas. and also to keep focus on the hostages, there are an estimated 239 people including americans still in captivity of hamas terrorists and other terrorists, other groups kpidnapped on october 7th. sarah blow is a student at the university of maryland. take a listen. >> we went to high school together and we're very good friends. he's an incredible guy and everyone loves him and he's funny and kind and charismatic. he's a natural born leader and everybody is being impacted heavily by this. i wanted to show my support for israel. i'm a proud jew and i wanted to be here to support my community. >> here with me in studio. >> gal gillal, and his 22 year broernld were there to attend the music festival and it was turned into a bloody massacre. during the fighting, the two brothers were separated and his father called to tell him that his younger brother had been kidnapped and taken hostage to gaza. gal, thank you sore being here. i'm so sorry it is understand these circumstances. i know your brother's picture is on the shirt and we'll be showing his picture throughout the interview. so you attended the rally. they started a five day march from tel aviv to jerusalem, there is you and your brother at the nova music festival. >> it is like 15 minutes before it happened. >> is that right? >> as i got in, he took the picture and then send it to my mom. >> so this is -- there is a property going on back in israel, this march of families from tel aviv to jerusalem. and i know a lot of families are frustrating. they don't think that the netanyahu government is doing enough to get the hostages home. they want the swap to happen as soon as possible. they want to get the hostages home to be top priority over anything else. what do you think? >> well, i think in this situation, it is hard to know how to manage. and everyone doing what they can. now, as a family of a hostage, you know, all i could think about is my brother and what i could do to help him and what i could do to promote this thing. and right here in quincy, a lot of protests from the hostages. if they are all right or not, if they need help or not, i'm not sure. but we are all doing what we can and we want them back home and that is why we march. we march for government for everyone to see and to understand and that is one thing that we can do. >> yeah. it is impossible to know what is right in this situation like this. you just want your brother home. >> exactly right. >> so you showed that. let's show it again. the last picture you took with him just before the attack. what happened after that picture was taken? >> no, he was waiting for me and he took the selfie and sent it to our mother as soon as we arrived and he took me to his camp and it was his first festival. now it is not just a music festival, it is a spiritual festival. people celebrate life with peace and love. and this is their belief. this is the way they live their life, not just to celebrate. ab i waned to go with him to make sure that everything goes okay. to be part of your experience. >> he's your little brother. >> he's 22 and i'm 29. but it is like we don't have this kind of difference in our age. you know, we share the same interests, we share the same hobbies. he's my best friend so i feel i should go and be with him. i arrived 15 minutes before the incident started and he and his friends were so happy to see me. they were so joyful. it is beautiful to see them at that moment. and he wanted me to go to the dance floor with him. but i didn't have time. i mean, in 15 minutes after i arrived, the sirens were already started. so, once the siren started, we in israel, you think about missiles attack. >> right. there is always hamas rockets coming in. >> always. we get used to it. and you don't think there is a t terror attack, not of this scale any way. we figured we should get out of there. the security guards told people to take cover or to get out. so we figured we should get out of there and we went to his own car. now before i went to the car, i went to my brother and asked him if he want to join me in my car because he and his friends were so supposed to go to my place. and he was like, he paused for a ekd is and i told me, look, came with my friends so i can't leave them. but i will come to your place and i'll see you when we get there. now, i told him that i would wait for him in my car in the exit. and i started to go to the exit and since our cars they didn't park next to each other and everyone was trying to get out at the same time, we just weren't in the same location. was way in the back, i was way in the front of the traffic. and at one point the traffic was just stuck. the exits were closed and i was surrounded by cars that didn't move. and then the shooting started. a massive round of shooting started from everywhere and we couldn't see the terrorists but we could hear the bullets, the whistles, the bullets went above our head hitting the cars. people were starting to fall all around us and starting to run in panic. and i had to find a cover. so i got out of many i car and i ran to a valley that was next to me. and i found a cover between to bushes and i called to my brother and he said that he's still in the area of the festival. and he was having a hard time to get out of there with his car. so he and his friends get out from the car and find a better place to take cover. at this point, he was with four cops, israeli cops. so i told him the most reasonable thing to say, stay as close as you can to our cops, to our forces. >> right. of course. >> to stay undercover. and i can't stay on the line because at that moment people are starting to run to my direction. some of them were covered with blood. they were yelling that we should get out of the -- because the terrorist are closing on us and i had to close call and i call him again 30 minutes after when i found a better place to hide. except then he didn't answer. >> he didn't answer the phone? >> yeah. i called him and i called hi friends and none of them answered. andpy parents started calling to tell me my brother isn't answering them and that is when i started to panic because if -- exactly. >> and their phones were traced to gaza? >> so, yeah, after eight hours of running and hiding, running and hiding, we were able to send out a location to a force that was near us. there were off duty and came for a friend that was hiding in the same location. and there were able to locate us and get us out of there while they were still shooting. it is eight hours after this started and two and a half hours after my brother's hostage video was released by hamas and i didn't know about it. i got out of there and i called my father and he asked if something happened to my brother and told me there is a hostage video of him from 11 1/2 a.m. and i got out of there at 2:00 p.m. >> was he one of the guys in the back of the truck? >> no. it is not a kidnapping video. it is a hostage video. you could see him already in gaza, cuffed and lying on the floor. him and another four other kids that were at party. you could see him with his best childhood friend. he was taken hostage with him. but the two other friends that went with them, they both were murdered. >> well we're going to keep covering the hostages. we're not going to forget about the hostages and keep covering them. and we'll keep talking about guy. and we thank you so much for being here. >> thank you so much. >> and we're going to keep talking about him and hopefully we'll be talking to both of you soon. >> yeah, i wish. it is very important. >> i know. >> keep talking about the hostages. >> we're not going to stop. we're not going to stop. gal, thank you sore being here. coming up hamas and the tunnels deep inside of gaza, underneath houses and hospitals. stay with us. - kids have a sense of imagination, but they're also tuned into reality. so when they see prejudice, you can't pretend it's no big deal. talk to your kids about bias and discrimination and open their minds to a world where everyone's free to play. the power goes out and we still have wifi to do our homework. and that's a good thing?
