together in new york yet again. i'm bill hemmer, good morning. >> dana: good morning, i'm dana perino and this is "america's newsroom." one thing about the hospital piece for yesterday the administration said yes, our evidence shows that hamas is hiding in the hospital. i don't know how long they knew that. but for weeks like in the last three weeks there have been media confusion on whether they were there. i don't know what time that happened. a lot of misinformation for three weeks on that. >> bill: on that point they have been hands off and they've kept it away from talking about it until now. >> dana: now we know and that's a good thing. u.s. is confirming what israel has been claiming all along. hamas uses tunnels beneath hospitals. the cover has been blown. the idf is carrying out a raid at the al-shifa hospital. meantime as we await the president's meeting with xi republicans are concerned. >> the desire to have any small any indication of progress. i worry about what concessions he might grant. just the way he framed this summit meeting is that we want to improve our relationship. we don't have a relationship with china. not like these are two teenagers dating. >> bill: mark esper will weigh in on that. we begin in southern israel where there have been numerous headlines from overnight. trey, let's start there. hello. >> good morning. a lot of updates overnight. we'll start with the al-shifa hospital where israeli forces conducted an early-morning raid targeting what they say are tunnel entrances for hamas, the group in control of gaza. i want to give you the play-by-play of how it all unfolded and how we found out. late last night i received a text message from a senior hamas official inside gaza saying in a few minutes the hospital will be stormed. we then reached out to the israeli military. they didn't have any information but ultimately released a statement saying they are storming al-shifa hospital, gaza's largest medical facility to go after hamas militants. we have gathered more information this morning from top intelligence and defense officials in israel trying to get an understanding what the focus and efforts were for the israelis. you can see in some video here one of the main objectives for israeli forces was to deliver medical aid to palestinian civilians, around 600 patients at the hospital and 1200 internally displaced palestinians sheltering in place there. the israelis delivered aid to those palestinians and they also went after hamas militants. they say they killed four militants around the hospital gate before entering the facility. once inside, no bullets were fired. this is of note because it indicates hamas fighters and leadership used the tunnel network to get to the southern part of gaza knowing the israelis were going to raid the facility. all of this is taking place amid ground fighting inside gaza. israelis say they took over the camp in the northern part of gaza a hamas stronghold. we go to the south of gaza with the half yeah crossing, the border between egypt and gaza. a fuel truck passed into gaza. there are conversations taking place behind the scenes not only to try to diplomatically get some of the hostages freed but more aid into gaza. >> bill: thank you, in 20 minutes we'll talk to a member of the, idf and show viewers what is beneath the hospital in gaza city. thank you for that. >> dana: president biden going into that meeting with president xi today seeking to change relations with china for the better, a quote. jacque heinrich live in san francisco traveling with the president. hi, jacque. >> good morning, dana. we have several announcements upcoming today. an expected agreement to restore military to military communications, also some progress securing china's help stopping iran from widening the war in the middle east. a deal in the works to mitigate risk with artificial intelligence and nuclear war heads. the biggest win for biden and the consequence for average americans is a deal we have confirmed to stem the flow of fentanyl. china will crack down on companies that manufacture fentanyl and pre-cursor chemicals and send them to latin america where they come across the southern border. xi signed a similar deal with president trump. china never enforced that. this time president biden is holding up sanctions relief as an enforcement mechanism. >> look, the proof will be in the pudding. if they, in fact, make these arrests and shut down these companies, then we'll be lifting a few sanctions, yes. >> does it include the china for -- >> we'll have more on that tomorrow. >> still we don't expect too much tough talk from biden. the administration thinks u.s. interests are better protected if china sees it is better to cooperate with the u.s. and the u.s. sees china's economic vulnerability as a pressure point. >> president biden: we're not trying to decouple from china. what we're trying to do is change the relationship for the better. >> china's economy is on the brink. they have massive youth unemployment, depreciating curensy. businesses souring on investment as the u.s. continues to recover after covid and we have partnerships in the region that china sees as alarming. china is here to tell businesses they are open for business as republicans are blasting two business groups here in the u.s. for selling a chance to dine with the communist leader. republicans are also pressuring the president not to give away the store calling on him to abandon the economic reset and get tough with china. press conference set later today. we're watching what biden says about china's biggest priority, taiwan. if we'll hear another pledge the u.s. will defend taiwan military officials dodged our questions. >> dana: you stay after it. >> bill: the big focus at this hour the idf carrying out the precise mission against the al-shifa hospital. former defense secretary mark esper is with us. good morning to you. kirby said off camera yesterday there is proof based on u.s. intelligence, in addition to israel. that hamas terrorists have used that facility to run their operations an hide. what we don't know is how many terrorists are in there today and where are the hostages? are they there or been moved elsewhere? >> sure, good morning, bill. first of all i think it's great the administration said that, acknowledged it. it confirms what israel has been saying. if you read the "wall street journal" op-ed today they chronicle since 2007 report after report and report about hamas using al-shifa and other hospitals to store weapons, etc. it appears as if the operation is going well. they appear -- israel has appeared to have done all the right things to giving warnings. brought incubators, baby food and medical supplies to the facility at al-shifa. bill, what will be really important here is what do they find in the next 24 or 48 hours? if they don't find anything underneath the hospital or in the hospital, i think it will be a blow to their narrative. if they do find hamas control nodes, weapons story it should undermine the narrative by the palestinians and others. the next 24 to 48 hours will be important on that front. >> dana: you have the situation with the president, who did not go to the rally for israel yesterday because he had this meeting planned with xi. that will dana: the possibility of a military cooperation and agreement he could make with president xi. is it important? helpful to us? i don't know quite how to sight. it is good to avoid the catastrophe but how do you measure that? >> it's good that biden and xi are meeting and china and the united states are meeting. the world's two largest economies and militaries and we're facing off in the south china sea and elsewhere around the world. it is good to meet. two things concern me. first of all, china never lives up to its obligations, rarely. whether it was xi committing to president obama he wouldn't militarize the islands and he did within a year. their breaking of international law in the south china sea. a treaty partner of ours, philippines is constantly harassed by the chinese navy. you can go on and on about china not living up to its commitments. my concern biden will make commitments that china won't live up to and bind our own hands. use of a.i. with regard to the military. the climate agreement that they are parading that talks about china pursuing its goals by 2030. yet we're not talking about the fact that every week, every week china builds 1 to 2 new coal-fired power plants. plants that will last decades. clearly, you know, my concern is what do we agree to and bind our hands where the chinese won't live up to any of these agreements? >> bill: we'll see how it goes. a big story this afternoon. >> dana: a columnist from the "washington post" wait biden risks falling into xi's trap. talking with china is better than not talking. biden should realize xi is
