classified documents from president biden's time as vice president have now been found at the justice department is now reviewing this, so where they were found, when they were turned over and tonight the white house just out with a statement tonight. let's get right to terry moran live in washington with late reporting. >> reporter: david, what we know that tonight the justice department has launched this preliminary investigation into classified documents recovered from an office that joe biden occupied and used a the penn biden center here in washington d.c., only a handful of these classified documents, this according to sources who are talking to abc news about this investigation, these documents i should say in the statement, the white house is acknowledging that, quote, a small number of markings were discovered when the president's personal attorneys were packing files housed in a locked closet at that office space last november, attorney general merrick garland has appointed the u.s. attorney general for the northern district of illinois to conduct a review of this matter. he was appointed by president trump, and this all comes as the doj's investigation into former president trump's possession of classified documents at mar-a-lago, that search warrant that was executed, this continues, there's one difference here, the white house says that president biden and his lawyers cooperated from the beginning that those classified documents found were turned over the next morning after they were found in the locked closet and of course trump and his team have been battling with the national archives and the department of justice over those documents, but this is a new investigation once again being conducted by the department of justice into president cleanup crews like that one will be busy for a while. california's governor announcing sunday that more people have died in two weeks of storms than during fire season. >> in the last 10 days, 12 people have lost their lives to these floods. >> reporter: in santa barbara county the entire community of montecito evacuated. in the sierra, ten feet of snow in spots, and it's still coming down. just outside of montecito which is under an evacuation order, on the five-year anniversary of one of their most horrific mudslides. wind alerts further inland. another one in california on wednesday, after that a little bit of break. 70 inches of crippling snow in the mountains. residents are told now to shelter in place and hope for the best as this rain continues to come down. david. >> rob after collapsing on the field suffering cardiac arrest. hamlin tweeting this photo from his hospital bed. doctors say they're ecstatic about his recovery so far. he was so excited he pulled all of the
