breaking news. a deadly shooting near the intersection of 17th and r streets in southeast washington. news 4's tracee wilkins is live on the scene with the latest. >> reporter: looks like we may be dealing with more than a homicide here. police just asked us to move so we're now located farther away than earlier. detectives were investigate this hapt house where the shooting happened just outside of the apartment house. adult male was shot and killed. pronounced dead around 2:45 a.m. as they were making their way inside of the building and beginning to investigate what may be going on inside of that building, they quickly came out of the building and then told us to move at least a block away because they belief that they may be dealing with a possible barricade situation. they would not give us any more information beyond that. we do know that at this point police are not releasing any suspect information. so we know that we have a homicide here. adult male shot and killed. and now a possible barricade situation as police asked us to move back and then they also moved back, as well. they also extended the crime scene tape here to encompass a larger area. we're live on the scene. tracee wilkins, reporting live in southeast, back to eun in the studio. also new this morning, police are investigating a deadly crash in north springfield at the intersection of hinton street. one person died in the accident around midnight. police are not released the victim's name. the cause of the crash is under investigation. today former d.c. council member harry thomas jr. will begin serving his prison sentence. he will report to a minimum security federal prison camp in alabama. he will likely send 2 1/2 years there. back in january he pled guilty to stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars in government grants that was supposed to go to youth programs. the prince george's councilwoman driving 100 miles per hour on the beltway could be close to losing her license. erin tole is going to court today. fine and six points on her license. she already had two points on her license. that means she could have eight points after this which will begin the process of having her license suspended. toles has apologized and said she was running late for an appointment. in alexandria, a woman is due in court charged with deadly road rage attack. she ran over 21-year-old arrington after an argument on harrison in mt. vernon. she's charge with felony hit and run. arrington was on her way to the hospital to see her mother who is recovering from a stroke. 5:04. breaking news. in iraq, a car bomb exploded killing two people and jiring 16 years. the bomb targeted a judge in downtown kirkuk. police say the bomb went off just as the judge arrived at his office near a police station. the judge and two of his body cars were injured. the explosions also set at least one shop on fire. a house committee could decide today whether to hold attorney general eric holder in contempt of congress. the committee's chairman republican darrell issa is upset holder won't hand over documents related to the failed gun smuggling program, fast and furious. even if they vote today to hold holder in contempt of congress, it will still have to pass the full house. this morning trying to figure out how a man wanted for murdering a woman in dewey beach died. 26-year-old kunar was suspected of stabbing danielle. maids found her body in a room monday morning. sources say she was staying in that room with kumar. police launched a manhunt and found his body in a hotel in new jersey. this is first murder in dewey beach since the town was incorporated in 1981. time right now is 5:06. the bounty gate scandal in the nfl is in the spotlight today. a warning hoax boat explosion in new jersey that cost the coast guard hundreds of thousands of dollars may be con in ethed to another hoax in texas. emergency crews got a call earlier this month from a boat which reported an explosion off sandy hook, new jersey. they later discovered the call came from land. they say it may have links to a search for the sinking boat in waters last month. coast guard is investigating allegations alec baldwin assaulted a photographer. daily news photographer said baldwin shoved and punched him outside the studio. baldwin came after him when he tried to get a picture of the actor and fiance. on twitter baldwin suggested that paparazzi should be, quote, waterboarded. he also later tweeted, quote, i suppose if the offending of paparazzi was wearing a hoodie and i shot him it would all blow over. no charges have been filed against baldwin at this time. one woman is fighting back against an airport security pat down. check this out. carol price says she was going through security in ft. myers, florida, when she was groped by a tsa agent. but instead of filing a complaint, she puts down her bags and gropes back. price said she did to it show the agent what she had just been through. her lawyers say that the agent was not following protocol and price should know. price is a former tsa agent herself who worked at that very airport until a few years her brother's funeral. she was removed from her flight and now faces misdemeanor battery charges. the defense in the jerry sandusky sex abuse trial is expected to rest today. if sandusky is going to take the stand in his own defense it will happen this morning. former coach's wife took the stand yesterday. she told jurors that she never saw or heard any inappropriate contact between sandusky@and boys who stayed at their home. dottie sandusky also contradi contradicted one accuser who claimed he yelled for help saying the room he claimed to be in was not sound proof. sandusky is accuse of sexually abusing ten boys over a 15-year span. deliberations is expected to dlin tomorrow. developing story in egypt this morning. state television there is reporting that former president hosni mubarak is on life support following a stre ing ing a stro. initial reports said the 84-year-old was dead when moved to a military facility. now medical staff describe his condition as very critical. mubarak was sentenced to life in prison for his role in mass killings. news of his failing health comes in a debate over who will succeed mubarak. results from last weekend's presidential election are making your way on the outer loop as well as the inner loop of the beltway. eun, over to you. >> police are surpding a neighborhood looking for the gunman responsible for deadly shooting earlier this morning near 17th and r streets in southwest august. tracee wilkins is live on the scene with breaking new developments. what's going on? >> reporter: let me show you right now where the detectives are positions here. they are about a block away from the house where this shooting happened. they are standing there behind that police vehicle. we have seen some uniformed officers approach the house but let me show you what they armed themselves with just a little while ago before they did that. this is video of tse officers retrieving their rifles before going closer to the scene and going closer to that house. let me explain to you exactly what's happened up to this point. around 2:45 a.m. a man was pronounced dead after he was shot outside an apartment house here at 17th and r streets and southea southeast. now, i spoke to one young lady who was theres that happened. she said that there was a crowd of people outside the house and that a man approached what appeared to be a long black something. turns out that something was a gun. that's what that man used to shoot and kill this adult male who died on the scene earlier this morning. now, police were investigating here just a little while ago. it looked like they were getting to the point where they could stap start to wrap up the investigation when they quickly moved away from the apartment house and then asked us to also move away. so we moved away a couple of blocks and detectives moved away. they're now positioned behind that vehicle. they say that that may be dealing with the possible barricade situation here. we don't have any more situation than that. the investigation unstill unfolding. police say a man and robbed and stabbed in a ran dam attack in montgomery county. the victim was walking down the street yesterday afternoon in new hampshire avenue and maryland. witnesses tell police the robber approached the victim who was in his 40s and demanded his backpack. there was a struggle. the robber pulled a knife and stabbed the victim several times. >> crazy. it's usually not like this around this area. you know what i'm saying? it's pretty cool out here. you know what i'm saying? >> this is like rare because a lot of people stay to themselves and it's real busy. a lot of stores and people coming back and forth. >> the robber took off with the backpack with a laptop computer inside. police searched nearby streets, wooded areas and even dumpsters but they did not find the robber. the victim was taken to the hospital in critical condition. howard county police are looking for the person who shot a 5-year-old boy last night. a neighbor found him lying in a field near frederick road and called 911. police say the teen is from baltimore. paramedics flew him to shock trauma where he is now recovering. police in fredericksburg open a picture taken from an atm camera will help them track down a purse snatcher. he tried to use the woman's credit card several times and finally succeeded at an atm machine where this picture was taken. the victim's purse was grabbed while trying to help a homeless man who was bleeding. the injured man was later charged with destruction of property for breaking a window. it happened earlier this month on princess ann street near the fredericksburg post office. the motion to set aside a negligence verdict against virginia tech. jurors ruled school officials waited too long to alert students of the shootings five years ago. families of two students killed say they could have survived if they were warned sooner. jurors awarded $8 million to those families. news 4 sources confirm d.c. mayor vin vent gray's choice to leave the district's housing agency was involved in a relationship with a senior staff enwhen he led a similar agency in philadelphia. sources tell news 4 that michael kelly disclosed the relationship to mayor gray before he was tapped to head d.c.'s department of housing and community development. gray's office cleared the appointment with the federal housing and urban development. kelly is not under investigation or facing any misconduct charges but does acknowledge he had an inappropriate affair outside of his marriage. kelly's nomination is subject to confirmation by the d.c. council. today the d.c. council will consider a new proposal that would allow the verizon center to add more electronic billboards. owner has been pushing the couldn council for months to allow them to update and add new signs to the building. some members complain the signs would be disruptive. the bill would allow nine new signs to go up. it would add a wrap around sign at the corner along with new signs at the especially trabs to the metro. he says the signs will emitt less light and they will help generate much needed revenue. the work group discussing expanded gambling in maryland could decide today whether to advise governor martin o'malley to call a special session to take up the issue. the group will meet today in annapolis. its members are hammering out details of an expanded gambling bill that legislation could include legalized table games and plans for a new casino in prince george's county. it claims a full service casino near the national harbor could bring in hundreds of millions of dollars each year for the state. and we're looking at 5:38. a frantic plea for help. >> he's at the bottom of the doorbell at 2:00 a.m. tuesday morning at a house in white water village in stafford. the homeowner opened the door and the teens walked in and held down the man's wife. he fought back youring two of them. the teens ran off. terry welch turned himself in. one neighbor newell ch when he was in high school. >> when i was saw him it was a big shock. >> he was a good kid. talented, good wrestler. >> deputies arrested two 16-year-olds, one suspect is being treated at an area hospital. the other suffered superficial injuries. five more break-ins had been linked to a pair of thieves targeting a germantown neighborhood. police say the duo has now hit a total of 23 homes near clopper road. they happened while the families were inside their homes. this is surveillance video from may 23rd. it slows one of the burglars. if you recognize this man, call police. police say the thieves are going after homes with its doors unlocked or garage door open. they say the burglars are also breaking swimming pool in the california home. police found no signs of foul play and continue to investigate his death as an accidental drowning. king's taped police beating in los angeles sparked the l.a. riot when's jurors acquitted three officers. the case against a fout officer ended in a mistrial. king was 47 years old. a u.s. military investigation is is not recommending criminal charges after the burning of korans in afghanistan. pentagon officials say a navy service member and six soldiers could face administrative punishments and no judicial action. february's incident sparked large protest outside a military base in afghanistan. more than 30 people died. military officials have said the service members did not know they were burning the muslim holy book. afghan members recovered the korans before they were destroyed. today, flags in maryland will fly at half staff in honor of julian chase. he was killed in combat on memorial day in afghanistan. the 22-year-old lived in edge water. maryland lawmakers are looking into a recent court of appeals decision that ruled pit bull owners can be liable for dog bites. the controversial ruling deemed pit bulls inherently dangerous, making owners and landlords liable for dog bites. animal right groups want lawmakers to take a bite out of the legislation. groups on both sides of the issue spoke at a task force hearing studying the breed in annapolis. >> we're mystified that other animal welfare organizations don't see how this law will protect dogs and can only benefit them by causing people to better care for them. >> it's when a pit bull attacked a 10-year-old dominique in the baltimore area. virginia governor bob mcdonnell is speaking out for the first time about the controversial oweser of the university of virginia's president. mcdonnall says the school's board of visitors should have been more open with the community after they forced sullivan out of office before two years on the job. many uva professors are also refusing to work with the college's interim president carl zeithaml. one professor even resigned. d.c. council member marion barry is going to fight the street car line on h street. barry says the plan is not well thought out and too expensive for the number of riders it will serve. the project is estimated to cost around 200 million dollars. if approved, the street car line should open next year. providing transit funding to local government is turning political in northern virginia. state officials plan on giving money directly to the governments instead of going to the northern virginia transportation commission. under the old 30-year-old system cities and counties requesting money from the state for a number of projects. the state then gave the money to the mvtc to give monte to local dpofts. state officials say the new system will provide more clarity to where the money is going the local officials say the state is trying to flex its muscle. a maryland woman is on a mission to uncover history at a cemetery in montgomery county. peggy erickson is trying to identify tombstones. she works with the montgomery county historical society. the cemetery has 80 unmarked graves dating back to the 100s. she says many soldiers fought in the civil war and educated in massachusetts. >> 18-year-old harness maker or weaver, leaving children behind. and young need more time to discuss whether to expend metro's new silver line into their county. county supervisors want to put off a vote on whether to opt into phase two of the silver line project until december 1st. they say they will use that extense to find a strategy for paying for the project and to receive feedback from the public. as of now the county's board of supervisors must decide on the project by july 4th. the vote has been floating along the georgetown segment of the canal for three decades but it failed safety insections. the national parks service says the cost to remarry it is too expensive. the final farewell to the georgetown will be next wednesday at 5:00 p.m. then it will be moved and demolished at fletcher's cove. this is the 19th year our station has run the camp for she has bad chewing habits and she chewed through her metal crate at six years old. now camp bow-wow will train lucy for free for the next year. her behavior is typical for puppies. there are plenty application in the mail. >> here's the problem though. it was addressed to the family's dog that died two years ago. tim morris says the document notified mo morris that he was eligible to vote and should register. the dog niece name was no sarlt and the family do not know how it happened but it came from a private not for profit group. the group admits that sometimes it makes mistakes. i'm sure
