[ cheers and applause ] these people have been lining up for hours to catch one of the hottest pop superstars in the world today. youngest star ever to have ten number one hits and accomplished it faster than anyone in the music industry. the show is going to be all rihanna. 8:30, rihanna, every song. we don t know what she s playing but we have been told the entrance will be one that you do not want to miss. we look forward to that coming up. first we go from this crowd on the plaza which is a good one to the crowds that will be hitting the roads, the rails and the airways this weekend for the long memorial day weekend. we re going to cover your travel questions now. we have jeff rossen along the garden state parkway in new jersey. what are we expecting? reporter: hey, matt. you guys send me the nicest places. just listening to radio traffic reports. a lot of you are going to be on the roads today. in the research for this i found out i don t want to expose secrets here, but a lot of you call in sick today, play hooky from work just to start the weekend early. i wouldn t do it, slash, can t do it. the roads are already packed. here s what you need to know. okay. so let s agree the beach is the place to be. some of you are taking the train. even more of you are taking a plane, but the overwhelming majority are driving, hitting the nation s highways in record numbers. aaa projects nearly 35 million americans will travel this memorial day weekend. nearly 31 million of them by car. but getting there ain t cheap this year. while gas prices have declineded slightly the national average for regular unleaded is $3.81 a gallon, more than a dollar higher than a year ago when the average was $t2.78 a gallon. the lesson is pain at the pump won t keep us home. reporter: but in much of the country drivers are paying well over $4 a gallon. from the east. yes. driving less, consolidating trips. reporter: to the west. it s outrageous. i never imagined it could get this bad. reporter: it s enough of a pain in the tank that sterling resorts in florida will pay for your gas. they can get in the car, come down, keep the receipt and we ll pay for the gas. reporter: as you book your summer vacation, if gas prices don t keep you grounded, jet fuel prices may. faircompare.com reports summer airfares are the highest since 2008. the typical july airfare is up $30 to $60 from last year. new york to chicago will cost you $257, up from $226 a year ago. detroit to denver, $295 up from $268. d.c. to los angeles, $410 this year, up from $367 a year ago. there are some great deals out there for june and july. but overall if you re paying for a ticket price you re probably paying from $30 to $60 more this year. reporter: even more if you are traveling to europe. airfares are the highest in a decade. new york to london, $1,100, up almost $150 from a year ago. chicago to paris, $1,250 up $100 from last year. however you get here, just get here. the problem is staying there isn t cheap. hotel rates are up about 5% this year. the average, matt, is $148 a night for a three-diamond hotel. rental car rates are holding steady. the average is $38 a day. the only decision left for me standing along the parkway is head that way to see rihanna or that way to go to the jersey shore. i ll let you decide. come up here and check out rihanna. get back from the reporter: good morning. if you re flying this weekend expect airports to be packed more than usual. a stronger economy and a higher demand for flights makes for a busy time and that will be the case here. hartsfield jackson is the busiest airport in the world and it seems everything is up for air travel this year. the number of passengers is up 2.93 million americans this year. you guessed it, ticket prices are up. according to faircompare.com ticket prices to the top 50 destinations are up 10 to 20% mainly due to increases in demand in the higher price of fuel. here s what to expect at the major hubs. atlanta tops the list. 1.6 million people expected to travel through this weekend. almost 1 million people through new york city s main airports. on the west coast lax expects more than 810,000 and in the midwest o hare and midway will see more than a million. the numbers are all up from last year. to leave yat the crowding most airports are beefing up staff so people get through lines faster. just keep in mind that parking this time of year at airports is a premium. check out some of the off-site parking instead of driving in circles and driving yourself crazy. matt? thanh may be sitting on the sidelines for now. how much longer will that last? nbc s andrea mitchell has the latest from washington. good morning. reporter: good morning. sarah palin has jolted the republican race with her strongest signal yet that she might be getting in. it has the look of an old-fashioned presidential campaign a bus tour starting this weekend with rolling thunder. stopping at places like getsberg and the liberty bell although although all the way to new hampshire. sarah palin calls it her one nation tour. i want to make sure that america is put back on the right track. we only do that by defeating obama in 2012. i have that fire in my belly. reporter: sarah palin is rehiring staff, buying an expensive arizona home, has a flattering biopic premiering, showed up at dancing with the stars and there is room for another social conservative. sarah palin could thwart michelle bachmann s possible run and hurt candidates with less star power like tim pawlenty. as to who run, we ll see. reporter: sarah palin is only two points behind mitt romney in a new gallup poll but an nbc news wall street journal poll shows she s a polarizing figure wildly popular with conservatives, solidly rejected by democrats and most independents. another down side, palin is a magnet for criticism like a tell-all book from a former alaska aide. my boss was obsessive about online polls and bolstering her image. we would craft letters to the editor and find people to submit them. we would spend hours transcribing radio shows to really help her look better sometimes than she was. reporter: friends think she might just say no. she exposes herself to the grief again without the offsetting benefit she has now of a great family life, great career in the media, adoring fan base and a healthy income. i think that s a lot to give up. reporter: it isn t the same as having a shot at being president of the united states. fox news, one of palin s employers says the bus tour will not change her role with the network unless she announces shs running. buckle your seat belts. now michelle bachmann says she ll announce whether she s running for president at an appearance in iowa in june. it s going to get bumpy. thank you very much. david gregory is moderator of meet the press. good morning. hey, meredith. insiders are saying it may look like sarah palin will run but she has not laid the groundwork to do so. what are you hearing? pretty much the same thing. she is making herself relevant, keeping herself relevant, not taking the steps to run. these are high profile signs she s putting herself in a position to announce, but sarah palin runs a closed society in american politics. there are few people outside of her inner sanctum who know what she ll do. she could be looking at key factors. she s second in the poll behind mitt romney. high name recognition. with mike huckabee gone there is space for a populist candidate. she can fill the void, particularly in iowa which kicks off the voting. she has higher negatives than any other gop candidate. how viable would her candidacy be? that s why there is skepticism. she s not seen as a general election candidate. even among rank and file republicans she s lost favor in if you go back to the tucson shooting and other issues. she s still using facebook, opining, attacking the president, but she lost a little bit of that sting in her punch. still popular in grassroots but as a broader appeal not taking steps to make herself popular. could she be a spoiler? i m thinking of michelle bachmann who will announce next month whether she ll run. could palin knock the wind out of bachmann s sails? there is a feeling that perhaps palin doesn t want bachmann to steal the spotlight. they would both be vying for the same space. bachmann was born in waterloo, iowa and will have an announcement there next month. she may play well among 40% of caucus goers who are more socially conservative. palin as well. palin is a factor whether she s a candidate or not. she has her own strong platform. either way, she makes noise in this presidential race. she has more potential impact, of course, if she s a candidate. meanwhile, there is speculation that congressman paul ryan may run. he s the political star of the moment for his effort to slash the federal budget. on wednesday night former vice president dick cheney praised him by saying i worship the ground ryan walks on. he said he hopes ryan doesn t make a run for the presidency because he said, quote, that would ruin a good man who has a lot of work to do. paul ryan said he doesn t have plans to run this time. he may look at it down the road. is it possible if someone says they want to put him on the ticket is he open to it? yeah. he didn t close the door, but he has problems in terms of being the intellectual force hurting the party. the issue of medicare is hot right now. a former vice president saying he worships paul ryan doesn t help the republican cause very much. they have plenty of support on the right. the bigger concern is as they found out in new york 26 in the upstate new york race this is an issue democrats can use against republicans if they don t change the message about medicare. what s coming up sunday on meet the press ? more on the politics of medicare, how the 2012 race is shaping up. i ll speak with breaking news this morning as the initial findings have been released from the black box recorders recovered from air france flight 447 that mysteriously crashed in 2009. nbc s tom costello joins us with the latest on the developing story. good morning. reporter: ann, good morning. astonishing really, because it shows that the black box data was working, was complete though it s been two years at 13,000 feet below the surface of the ocean. we know now that the air speed sensors on the exterior of the plane apparently iced over. when that happened the plane s crew was not getting good accurate air speed data. the auto pilot, we are told, and the auto thrust systems disengaged. then for some reason the crew put the nose of the plane up. that put the plane into a stall. a stall is what happens when a plane loses lift on the wings. a three and a half minute plunge began for the crew and passengers on board all the way down to the surface of the ocean. 228 people died. ann, what is clear from the flight data recorder is that the plane was possibly, probably flyable but because of the errors of the crew they stalled the plane and crashed it. the engines, though they were in a stall position, were working as the plane hit the ocean. back to you. compelling details. perhaps lessons can be learned from that. tom costello this morning. this morning president obama signed a four year extension on the patriot act including roving wiretaps. congress raced to pass legislation hours before the midnight deadline last night. the president signed the act using an auto-pen machine because she s in france attending the g8 summit. secretary of state hillary clinton and admiral mike mullen are in pakistan working to soothe relations after the raid that took down osama bin laden last commitment to u.s. securi interest or risk using billions of dollars in aid from washington. in joplin, missouri, officials are trying to sort through a list of 232 people that are still unaccounted for in the chaos after sunday s tornado. ron allen has the latest from joplin. good morning. reporter: good morning, ann. overnight as many as one dozen names came off the list of missing persons as survivors came forward and the list is updated. the official death toll is up by one to 126. as you look at the devastation, it s still possible to see people beginning to move forward. in the middle of the mayhem, daren collins is picking up the pieces and rebuilding his wife s salon. we can stand around and strer at it or jump in. reporter: casey owens is searching ever where for her cousin, will norton, as he drove home from his graduation and he was ripped through the roof of the family s hummer. over 200 people are still accounted for. a number reduced by one when it turned out the 71-year-old sally adams is safe. meanwhile, other families grieve. the local newspaper filling with remembranc remembrances. there are a few moments of joy like this. you re such a good baby! reporter: she has been trapped in a crawl space under the family s gone. we thought betty was gone. reporter: five days later, safe and sound. it s always nice to see a happy ending, but this is going to be a very difficult weekend around here. the first funerals begin today and there is a memorial service plans and a visit by president obama. thank you for reporting on the story. northern sudan has disputed a border area violating the peace treaty with the south and setting off a new humanitarian crisis. the occupation has caused an exodus of some 80,000 people who are without shelter and yes. and you saw the love between those two individuals, right? yes. you saw how much caylee loved casey. yes. you would see her hug casey an occasions? yes. reporter: but then melissa england shared a memory of a cell phone call she overheard that casey made. she told friends that she couldn t pick them up to hang out because she was having car trouble or got a flat. as she hung up she kind of threw the phone down in the dashboard and said, oh, my god, i m such a good liar. the theory is this was such a party girl she killed her child so she could keep partying. that s why it s important to establish through witness after witness and identify and portray casey anthony in a way that makes it conceivable that she could kill her own child. reporter: for prosecutors it s critical to paint a picture that she s a psychopath that on the one moment she could be loving her daughter and at another moment she could kill her daughter and show no regret or emotion at all. matt? kerry sanders in orlando for us this morning. thank you very much. savannah guthrie is today s legal correspondent. good morning. good morning. the parade of witnesses, the friends and both sides are getting points out of the witnesses. the cumulative affect. casey anthony was happy and outgoing. that s a tough set of facts for the defense, because if you buy the defense theory that this girl tied of an accident. and casey anthony shows no signs of being distraught. george anthony comes back to the witness stand after the dramatic first day and for people hearing about this case and reading about this case, they will hear about the testimony concerning stolen or missing gas cans. why is that important? the gas can had a piece of duct tape over it. it s so unique and the same kind of duct tape that was found over caylee anthony s body they say it was the murder weapon? yes, they do. and the defense connects it to george anthony who they alleged helped with the cover-up. because of the tense moments that we are seeing now between george anthony and jose baez, are we starting to see a defense strategy, in other words, keep the focus off of casey anthony and keep it on somebody like her father? no question about it. and in testimony yesterday the defense attorney was almost trying to gode anthony, where george anthony becomes angry so jurors can start to visualize can see the person that casey anthony so feared. he seems to be an experienced witness and so far not getting riled up in the courtroom. and an ex-boyfriend of casey s took the witness stand and interestingly here he did not take the witness stand in front of the jury, only in front of the judge and he was there to talk about allegedly talking to casey about moments of abuse, either at the hands of her brother or father. why wasn t the jury there? [ male announcer ] new chips ahoy! chewy gooeys filled to perfection with delicious creamy fudge; every cookie is crammed with joy! back at 7:42, this morning on today s health, springtime allergies. people complain every year that this is the worst season ever but this year it may be true. dr. beth corn is from the allergy department at mount sinai school of medicine. good morning. good morning. why are things so bad? is there something specific about this year? there are many theories. first of all, the season started very early. if you remember early back in march it was warm so the trees started pollinating. we had an incredibly lush winter where the trees were soaking up a lot of moisture from the snow and rain. that may have contributed, too. if the season starts early, will it end early? no, it s just a longer season. what happens with allergies is when you are initially exposed to something your immune system gets revved up. so your immune system is primed so later on in the season you need less allergen to make you feel very allergic. so you get worse through the season. a lot of people aren t especially if they haven t had allergies in the past aren t sure if it is allergies or a spring cold. are there specific traits to allergies or symptoms? they are very similar in terms of what you feel itchy, watery eyes, runny nose, lethargy. let s go through the tips. keep your windows closed and use air conditioning. seems obvious but a lot of people don t do it. the reason is when the windows are open you re allowing the allergens to come inside. what you want to do is minimize your exposure to allergens. save outdoor exercise for later in the day. once you come in remove your pollen by showering. absolutely. the pollen counts are higher in the morning. if you can minimize your time outside in the morning that s better. once you come in from the outside if you can remove your clothing and shower, rid yourself of the allergens you will feel better. how about over-the-counter medications? do they do a good job? it s a great place to start. if you are having itchy, watery eyes and need artificial tears that can soothe your eyes. if you re congested use a saline rinse to decongest you and clear away some of the drip in the back of the throat. for most people that s not enough. most people move on to anti-histamines. there are sedating and nonsedating ones. i suggest that most people try the ones that are nonsedating like xyrtec, claritin and allegro. and everyone should see an allergist because knowledge is power and you know what to avoid and that helps for next year as well. thank you so much. lots of people sneezing out there appreciate this. still ahead, the miracle baby who developed outside his mother s uterus. his mom shares her story in an exclusive live interview. first, these messages. it s cookout season, and we honor this all-american tradition with the red, white, and blue. ocean spray cranberry, white cranberry, and blueberry juice cocktails. al, thank you very much. now to a rare and remarkable delivery. an arizona woman just gave birth to a baby boy who was growing outside her uterus. we ll talk to her in a moment. first, nbc s janet shamlian is in phoenix with her story. janet, good morning to you. reporter: meredith, good morning. this amazing birth defies logic. a young woman, pregnant with her second child, learns the fetus is growing inside the lining of some abdominal muscles outside the wound. doctors tell her to proceed with the pregnancy would be putting her life in danger. yet, she presses on. this newborn, by all accounts, is a miracle baby. nikki soto gave birth monday in a pregnancy that defied the odds. it was really scary. just because we didn t know where the baby was and what he was attached to and what could happen. reporter: during the pregnancy, the 27-year-old phoenix woman carried the baby outside of her uterus. the baby surrounded only by a thin wall of membrane and muscle. a pregnancy so unlikely, so rare, doctors couldn t say whether it had ever happened before. i m not expecting to see this again. i haven t seen this before. reporter: soto says doctors warned her when they discovered the condition at 18 weeks that continuing the pregnancy would put her own life at risk. even though she elected to continue the pregnancy, i believe she was hearing our concerns and understood the risk, balanced the risk and benefits and did everything we asked them to do in the hospital. reporter: planning for every contingency, a staff of 25 doctors, nurses and other medical personnel was there. but in the end the procedure went off without a hitch. the baby, named azlen cruz perfecto was delivered by c-section at 32 weeks, weighing just under 3 pounds but doctors say perfecto is doing great. obviously he was born eight weeks earlier than we would normally like him to be. but he s in stable condition. i m thankful that everything turned out so well and that i didn t stop and the doctors didn t stop. i m just so grateful. reporter: nikki will leave the hospital in a few days. azlen in a few weeks but only because of his low birth weight. his name comes from the chronicles of narnia. it represents strength and bravery. thank you very much, janet shamlian. n irk nikki is with us along with one of her doctors. good morning to you both. good morning. good morning, meredith. after all you have gone through how are you doing and how is azlen doing? i m doing well and the baby is, too. i want um go ahead. i want to go back to monday if i can. just the thoughts going through your mind. you re about to deliver the baby c-section. doctors told you how risky it is. they re not sure when where the baby is, what the placenta might be attached to. it has to be a frightening moment for you. it was. up until monday morning i was fine. like, everything s going to go great. everything will be fine. monday morning i started panicking. it wasn t a normal c-section. it s an incision from my abdomen, from my belly, my lower so it was a big incision. i was concerned about that, too. but everything went well. doctor, the question people at home might be having is how is this even possible? i have never heard of this. we haven t seen anything like this before or heard anyone describe something like this. it looked like the pregnancy developed outside the uterus in an upper corner in the uterus and the muscle just expanded to allow this to continue as far as it did. it typically wouldn t accommodate more than 12 to 14 weeks of a pregnancy. started like an ectopic pregnancy then? started in the upper portion of the muscle. some of the imaging studies looked like it was separate but it continued to expand like an outpouching of the upper portion of the uterine wall. what was your greatest concern going into monday s operation? well, the biggest concern is what it would be attached to and where the blood supply came from because it is not a normal pregnancy. there was great risk for bleeding, injury and potential need to remove organs including bowel, ovaries, tubes. things of that nature. but the placenta was attached to the outside of of the uterus? yeah. the placenta was attached to the thin outpouching of the uterine wall with blood supply coming from the right ovary and tube. all she had to have removed was the right ovary and tube. she was able to keep the uteruu. will it be possible for nikki to have another baby? sp. that s correct. she has her uterus and left tube and ovary. hopefully more normal next time. you have a 7-year-old son at home. you tried five years for another baby. you knew how risky it was. doctors told you, if you go ahead with the pregnancy, there is so much risk attached. what made you decide to do that given the fact that you have a son at home? it was the fact that this was maybe my only chance to carry another child because if this didn t go right and we had to remove the uterus or something like that i wouldn t carry again. so i really was hoping for the best that i would carry this one through and have a second child. we wanted that. what was it like to carry the ba baby? nobody else we have heard of experienced this. every day were you worried? a little bit. every day there was concern in my mind. is everything going to go okay like i m telling myself it will? it was concerning. i took the risk and i just stayed in the hospital. i tried to stay as safe as i could to make everything the best that it could go. it took a large team to get you through this wonderful delivery of your little boy. what would you like to say to them? reporter: ann, good morning. the plane is not pressurized so when you are above 10,000 feet you have to wear an oxygen mask or you develop hypoxia, lack of oxygen. for whatever reason the pilot s air mask may not have been working. it was a brief radio conversation between a private pilot and a denver air traffic controller that brought the first sign of trouble. okay. that s after the arrival. maintain one seven reporter: the message was un un un unintelligible. i think you might be experiencing some hypoxia. would you like a lower altitude? soon his wife was on the radio. i can t talk much because i got to hold the oxygen to my face and the mic and the thing. i can t tell what s going on. reporter: the couple was flying a plane from san bernardino california to colorado springs. the trouble began over southern colorado. it was soon clear they would have to land quickly. farmington, new mexico, was the closest airport. that s when controllers asked the crew of a great lakes commercial plane flying nearby to move in for a visual and help talk the pilot s wife down. have you ever flown an aircraft before? do you have aany experience? no. i got to get down. i need to breathe. reporter: john cox is nbc s aviation consultant. the performance of the pilot was assignmesymptomatic of hypo symptoms. your speech is slurred, your mental ability is slurred and physical capabilities are diminished. get down below 10,000 feet and you will feel better. he s got oxygen on. it s just not. reporter: as the plane descended the pilot insisted he was in control. but the great lakes crew wasn t convinced. i can tell by how he s talking. he can t think straight. that isn t true. i m getting better. reporter: the plane has a parachute that pops out of the top in case of engine failure. thankfully it wasn t necessary. 45 minutes after the emergency started they managed a safe landing in farmington. on thursday the pilot and his wife thanked everyone involved for making the mid-air save, if you will, including the great lakes pilot. what s not clear is why the pilot s oxygen mask wasn t working. ann? thank you very much, al. it s the first big holiday weekend of the summer. millions have plans to travel far from home. we have two reports starting with nbc s jeff rossen in the garden state parkway in new jersey. good morning, jeff. reporter: good morning, ann. this is a friday. technically a work day, in air quotes, but it s a day that everyone wants to take off to get an early start on the roads. this is traffic headed down to the jersey shore. you can see, even though it s okay now it s getting worse and worse as the hours go on. this is the unofficial start to summer and this year summer travel plans may cost you more here is everything you need to know before you head out. reporter: so let s agree the place is the place to be. some of you are taking the train. even more of you are taking a plane, but the overwhelming majority are driving, hitting the nation s highways in record numbers. aaa projects nearly 35 million americans will travel this memorial day weekend. nearly 31 million of them by car. but getting there ain t cheap this year. while gas prices have declineded slightly the national average for regular unleaded is $3.81 a gallon, more than a dollar higher than a year ago when the average was $2.78 a gallon. i guess the bottom line is pain at the pump won t keep us home. reporter: but in much of the country drivers are paying well over $4 a gallon. from the east. yes. driving less, consolidating trips. reporter: to the west. it s outrageous. i never imagined it could get this bad. reporter: it s enough of a pain in the tank that sterling resorts in florida will pay for your gas. they can get in the car, come down, keep the receipt and we ll pay for the gas. reporter: as you book your summer vacation, if gas prices don t keep you grounded, jet fuel prices may. faircompare.com reports summer airfares are the highest since 2008. the typical july airfare is up $30 to $60 from last year. new york to chicago will cost you $257, up from $226 a year ago. detroit to denver, $295 up from $268. d.c. to los angeles, $410 this year, up from $367 a year ago. there are some great deals out there for june and july. but overall if you re paying for a ticket price you re probably paying from $30 to $60 more this year. reporter: even more if you are traveling to europe. airfares are the highest in a decade. new york to london, $1,100, up almost $150 from a year ago. chicago to paris, $1,250 up $100 from last year. however you get here, just get here. unfortunately staying isn t cheap. hotel rates are up 5% from last year. the average for a three-diamond hotel is $148 a night. the good news is rental car prices, ann, are holding steady about $38 a day. there is one other piece of advice if you re on the road today. get used to rest stop food. you know, the beef jerky, apple pie, bacon egg and cheese, hashbrowns, french toast and you can t stop without getting a present i got for you. perfect. i will wear it proudly. you get away from the freeway. jeff rossen, thank you so much. here s natalie. i m the jersey girl. i ll take the t-shirt. nbc s thanh truong is at hartsfield jackson international airport in atlanta, the busiest airport in the world. is it busy there today? probably everybody. we already sauteed our bacon until it s crispy but not hard. we pulled out the bacon, added our mushrooms. you want to cook it hard. i want to get a nice saute so it cooks down on that. we add our sliced red onions. if you want to stir that around. hoda knows how to stir. that was it. the reason to my madness. you bite in the burger and all the filling falls out when it s on top. so what do you do? tell us. our patties are here. we are going to take our cheese, which is a problem in and of itself. when you put it on the burger on the grill when it s almost done. that s when i put it on. sometimes it doesn t melt. sometimes it melts too much and goes all the way in the grates. we don t have that much time. here we go. we top it with our cooled you on-ones, mushrooms and bacon. why do you cool it? never mind. just kidding. you don t want to put a hot thing inside of a cold piece. go, hoda, look at you. swish it, press, press. it s going to take longer to cook it? it s going to be about two minutes were side for medium. you can always make these smaller. throw that on there. we need to season. isn t there already a lot of salt in it? never mind. there is some salt on the inside. never mind, let s eat. there is extra weinbach here, hodi woman. all right. you got that? i ve got the meat. okay. come on back here. okay. these are huge. which one is cooked the most?
