championships runs through sunday: turning to scorching heat gripping much of the u.s., cnn meteorologist allison chinchar is here. when is the cooldown coming? >> it is coming, i promise. we've got to get through the weekend first in a lot of these places. that includes the southern tier of the u.s. we've got a lot of extreme heat alerts out there, but also seeing more creep into the southwest where we're going to start to see temperatures going up in the coming days. take palm springs, for example, topping out at 114 tomorrow, up to 117 on monday. phoenix, 113 on sunday, back up to 116 by the time we get to tuesday. you're talking 10 degrees above average for a lot of these places, even sacramento well above where they should be this time of year. across the southeastern portion of the u.s., one to two days left and then we'll see numbers come back down. houston, 107 sunday, back down under triple digits by the start of the week.

you've got a lot of excessive heat warnings across the southern tier of the u.s. and some new ones starting to pop up cross the southwest. that's where we anticipate seeing temperatures really rise the next several days. palm springs going from a high of 114 on sunday up to 117 on monday. phoenix, 113 on sunday, up to 115 both monday and tuesday. even sacramento looking at temperatures about five to ten degrees above average. a lot of those areas not really getting much relief from the heat until mid to end of the upcoming week. we're also going to see some relief, but once we get through the weekend across the southern tier. take houston, for example, topping out today at 104. getting even warmer by sunday, topping out at 107. finally starting to see that drop off by monday. similar for new orleans, again, still two more days of triple-digit temperatures before we finally start to see that dropping back into the mid 90s. but even then it's still going to be about five degrees above normal on monday. at least that trend is going to

you name it that section of the country and we're going to be hot. triple digits for nashville, little rock, oklahoma city. and these temperatures when you add in the humidity we're going to be even warmer thanimate. dallas you're headed to 107 for your saturday afternoon plans. if you look up to the north it's a little bit better and more seanable. as i mentioned cincinnati low 80s as we round out the weekend, but unfortunately no relief for parts of the south. and the tropics have really woken up. we've got systems we're going to continue to keep an eye on here and potentially even an area of interest that could develop over parts of the gulf of mexico in the coming days and tropical storm franklin that can bring some rough waves. still ahead who won this week's gop primary debate.

upper midwest as we go throughout the afternoon. heat advisories, excessive heat warnings in effect for this entire area. look at the highs today, 104 in dallas, 101 oklahoma city, even minneapolis hitting the triple digits. high temperatures over the next couple of days in dallas will hit 107 on thursday. houston will hit 106 on thursday as well. a good 10 degrees above normal. even little rock and oklahoma city staying in the triple digits for the next three days or so. as we travel to the north, midwest, look at minneapolis, 101 tuesday. we'll drop about 10 degrees though by the time we get into thursday. green bay peaks on wednesday at 96 degrees. and even chicago hitting 99 degrees. so today's heat index will feel like 110 in dallas, feeling like 113 in little rock, even feeling like 114 in minneapolis. that is a hot afternoon. more than 400 potential records will be broken.
