let's get started with the very latest on the recovery. boris sanchez is live in fort myers. in this press conference about to begin, what are we expected to hear? zbl >> reporter: well, we are expecting an update from the sheriff of lee county on the death toll and the question that they couldn't answer for us yesterday, how many people remain missing. obviously it is a delicate operation here in lee county, specifically in fort myers beach which the sheriff announced was closed off even to residents in part because this search and rescue efforts is slowly transitioning into a search and recovery effort. the sheriff revealed to us that his team is encountering some morbid scenes as they begin to move debris and comb through the wreckage. they are discovered cadaver and that is why you see the death toll climbing the way that it has. more than 100 fatalities here in the state of florida. the sheriff yesterday saying
do they know? >> oh, they know. they're here right now. i just want to explain i'm not trying to make this sound worse than anybody else. everybody's going through a real bad time now, but it's unimaginable to see 25 feet of water coming rushing through. it was like a dam broke. it was -- it was taking everything. there's cars floating down the road. there's people. they're pulling people out of the mangroves right now. you know what i mean? they've got cadaver dogs down here going through the hotels looking for everybody. the horror stories are just incredible. a friend of mine was in a house and people that we all know each other on the island. it's a small community, and everybody freaked out, and i'm just here to talk to everybody and make sure everybody they need to talk. and he said he was holding onto his best friend's hair and the surge was like 25 feet and his best friend says you've got to let go of him, and he said no, he's my best friend, let go, and he says no. and he finally let go of him, and that was it. i mean, this is what happened

that make them a nightmare. for some people. >> so every year, a bunch of cadaver dogs would come out and get certified for fema, by going to these old mining towns and doing the searches for the old grave sites. >> that's right, it's a gathering of some of the top cadaver search dogs in the country. and, of all places. gunnison. >> and you thought, what better time to look for a body then when there are a lot of cadaver dogs in town? >> exactly. >> lisa higgins was there a dog trainer for more than 30 years. her dogs have helped solve all kinds of cases. from missing children, to serial killers. >> the sheriff asked that i become the liaison between the canine group, and the agencies working with this case. >> so early on july 17th, the cadaver dogs formed up with dozens of investigators. about a mile from the 7:11
hinton's home, about 30 miles away from emory university. shannon's family found out about it from the local news. >> we know you are the primary suspect in the disappearance of shannon melendi, and we like to take just talk to. >> i glanced the tv and i see a picture of an officer going like this, with the rod, and one of the planters. they >> were at his house? >> yes. we already knew that he was a suspect, so they were at his house searching the house. >> where the cops letting even on this? >> very little. >> what did you find? >> that house was gone through with a fine tooth comb, they say. they also took a cadaver dogs down there to see if there was any evidence of a body being there. we found nothing down there. >> no sign that shannon had ever been there? >> that we could find. >> but, in the trash pit behind enten's house, they did find something interesting. a collection of women's clothing.
