Ted Cruz, now John Boehner's foe, was once his lawyer

Ted Cruz was once John Boehner’s lawyer.
Yep.
Some 25 years ago, Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, helped represent former House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, in a bonkers civil case that eventually won Boehner $1 million in legal fees.
This isn’t to say that Boehner and Cruz were bosom buddies. All you have to do is read Boehner’s book, "On the House: A Washington Memoir," to understand how much enmity Boehner holds for Cruz.
It was Cruz who led the failed charge to defund Obamacare in the fall of 2013. The theory was that Republicans wouldn’t support any bill which funded the government – and Obamacare. So Cruz’s quest wound up shuttering the government for 16 days.

there were republicans who favored it, there was a solid -- the entire democratic caucus would have voted for it. but at that time, congressman boehner, speaker of the house, couldn't bring it forward because he was afraid of the right wing in his party. i think the same thing was probably true of senator mcconnell. now i think that president trump is pressing them and saying, look, i will take the flack from the right if you push this forward. and we'll see if he's got the gumption to go forward with it. certainly hope that he does. as i said, at the end of the day the politics are sort of -- sometimes the white house looks a little bit like a clown car, you're never sure who's getting out the door. but at the end of the day, he said he would provide relief to these people. they need it. and he should make good on that. >> i raise the hillary clinton question, hillary clinton of course will be a guest of rachel's just later on after this show.

cotton, the victory of netanyahu, how the access of resistance to this deal has affected the desirability of getting the bill. >> the getability is perhaps a little affected. iran has brought up the letter and netanyahu and even congressman boehner and other people involved in the resistance to the deal. that may be a negotiating tactic to use that as a negotiating tactic to try to get concessions from the obama administration but i don't think it has been the single bidding factor for iran. >> they may have failed thus far, but you can bet they won't let up with the deadline looming. the iran deal has come to stand in for their worst darkest fears about president obama.

to lose his re-election that we need to vote for it. there are already dozens that are willing to do it and are able to go back out to their constituency and explain why they vote for -- >> where is the road block if you have these dozens of republicans in the house want to get something done, where are you running into the problem? >> i think here is the problem. you have a small group of tea party folks in the house republican majority that block. they threaten. i know what they do. they threaten speaker boehner and say you will no longer be speaker and mccarthy won't be majority whip if you allow this and their numbers are enough to cause that kind of chaos within their own ranks. look. i've seen this. mario, a congressman from florida, he did everything he could to bring together a coalition. he did a wonderful job but what he can't overcome is the fear that the leadership has of losing their positions. and i want to say to him and to

would be stronger today if house republicans had allowed a simple yes or no vote on this bill or, for that matter, any bill. they would be following the will of the majority of the american people who support reform. and, instead, they proven again and again that they are unwilling to stand up to the tea party in order to do what is best for the country. the worst part about it is a bunch of them know better. the failure of house republicans to pass a darn bill is bad for our security, it's bad for our economy and it's bad for our future. >> in a statement, speaker boehner said in part in our conversation last week, i told the president what i've been telling him for months. the american people and their elected officials don't trust him to enforce the law as written. until that changes it's difficult to make progress on this issue. so, chuck, it's passed through the senate. hit a dead end in the house has immigration reform. what is the future of immigration reform?

created equal and the number may not matter as much as the magnitude. it is a clear sign that despite thad cochran's victory and despite the establishment of the party having some electoral victories there is still divisions that create good men. john boehner and barack obama turn the clock back and look at their resumes you thought they could do business together. this is kind of the low point of their relationship in some ways. boehner said not only can i not work with the guy but i want to stop him from doing what he wants to do. >> what is new about that? >> some people had the fantasy they could be legislative progress. if boehner is now going to do this, it's hard to imagine them getting anything done. >> i don't think boehner had that fantasy as well as key republicans. i think they had that from the get-go and doubled down on it. >> i think it's a critical issue
