nybble welcome to the richard nixon presidential library and museum. my name is paul, i m the active directer of the library. i appreciate all of you coming to one of our continuing author talk presentations. today we are very fortunate to have the really, the leading scholar on pat nixon, who is, by the way, born 100 years ago this year. marry brennan, who did much of the research here for her book is the chair of the department of history at the university of texas in san marcos. her specialty is post world war ii conservative movements, and she hoose twroin date three different books. those being turning right at the 60s conservative capture of the g.o.p. with the wise mothers and the conservative women and the crusade against communism and the book we love around here pat nixon embattled first lady. her work is an outstanding work, and i would like do you help me welcome her out to the stage to talk about her work. mary brennan. have my own pr business and they ve also done projects, communication projects with clients. among them, co-authored the book. basically i were to steve forbes and conversations led to the idea for this book. how did you meet steve forbes? i met him at an event i did when i was working in southern california and one thing led to another. i moved back to new york. i am from new york and started working at forbes of the pr department. elizabeth ames, or practical experience, how do that that? i ve learned a lot since forbes. when i sat forbes islandwide about markets. again, i began as a journalist and worked at businessweek many years ago as a journalist. but when i started to work as an entrepreneur, i learned about the fact that you really need to have economic freedom to create jobs. something i learned personally. if you re obviously just getting a paycheck, you really don t understand how government can affect that firsthand. that was one of the thin ....
we re on the red carpet. finalist in poetry, young adult literature, nonfiction, and fiction books, and of course being booktv, we focus on the nonfiction. we want to let you know who some of the nine fiction finalist are. domingo martinez, his book is boy kings of texas. his fourth volume on the lbj legacy, and robert caro appeared on q & a and at the national book festival in september. the late anthony shadid has been nominated. he died in syria while covering syria for the washington post. his wife will be here representing him, and that s nada bachary. katherine boo has been nominated, behind the beautiful forever, about mumbai, and anne applebaum has a book out and is scheduled on our q & a show in september. so we ll be interviewing those authors as we go. we ll be watching the red carpet here as some of the authors have their picture taken. right now we want to talk to the chairman of the national book foundation, and this is david steinberger. mr. steinberg ....
