monkey pox in a second but one more quick followup on cove covid, and cases are rising but hospitalizations are fall. is in the summer wave coming a little earlier? or do we think this is something else and we may see another uptick in the months ahead? >> two things have happened. one, we're seeing a different subset of omicron, the initial omicron, that is different and the variant now is 3.2.12.1 and the difference is it cause reinfections and the folks who have had omicron in the past, and by the way, the cases are higher than what was reported, as others have said, because a lot more people are doing rapid testing at home and not necessarily reporting it. what you're not seeing thankfully and we've been talking about this for a few weeks now, you're not closely seeing that increase in deaths so i think it is a change in behavior and also a particular variant and i think it is important to detect, for those living in communities with high

to ukraine. president biden said the u.s. is willing to do more to help taiwan. so my question for you, secretary austin, is is the u.s. making a commitment to send troops to defend taiwan in the event of an invasion by china, and general milley, i have a followup for you as well. >> kourtney, as the president said, our one china policy has not changed. he reiterated that policy and the commitment to peace and stability across the taiwan strait. he also highlighted our commitment under the taiwan relations act to help provide taiwan and the means to defend itself. so our policy has not changed. >> i think the relations act, the u.s. is committed to ensure taiwan has resources it needs to defend itself, but it doesn't require u.s. military intervention. i want to ask is the u.s. making a commitment by saying they are

so this has to do with something that happened last year while he was in high school, and in his area where he lives. some three hours away from here where the school had gotten some information. they were concerned that he was talking about a murder/suicide kind of plan, and so they alerted the state police. the new york state police. and the state police say they went to his home. they took him in for a mental health examination. he was at a hospital for about a day, a day and a half. but we don't know what happened after that. we don't know if there was any kind of followup or what was done after that. but they say that is the only information or any kind of interaction that they have had with him previously. he was not on anyone's radar other really than that. there was no reasoning to suspect him in any kind of crime or that anything like this was certainly going to happen. the fbi has said that they did not based on their research, on their data search, he was not on

threat, but the state police actually responded to the school and they took the alleged shooter to the hospital for a mental evaluation. so he has had some contact with the mental health system, with the police certainly, but there was nothing there that they say that would give any indication that this was going to happen, obviously. it's not clear if there was any followup. they said there was no other information that they ever had any contact with him after that. obvious a significant piece of information for the investigators because it could lend them some help in knowing that this individual, perhaps, had some history, but again, they're trying to sort through that. they're working through the invest. they know what weapons were used. they have a timeline they believe of when the weapons were purr chaed, how they were purchased. they have all of that information. they also know significantly another piece of information that the alleged shooter was actually here the day before.

which they now suspect and believe is tied to him. they have a lot of information. they know where the weapons were purchased, when they were purchased and also significantly they know that he was here on friday as we talked about doing this kind of recon nans mission, seeing if it was a suitable target, and they know he was here on friday. another significant point we learned was the state police last year were called to his school because of a threat that the police say he made, and he was taken in for a mental health service. there was no followup, and we don't know what happened with that. he was 17 at the time. he's 18 now. so they have learned a lot from the information they've gathered. his parents have been cooperating and they're doing more search warrants and other information to try to get a better idea of exactly how this happened. how did he get so radicalized? >> we learned a lot. it's only been 24 hours since this started within hours of the

before on friday. they believe casing the location out, trying to familiarize himself with the location so they have that information. we also learned that last year in june of 2021, that there was some kind of mental health evaluation with the alleged shooter. the school called the state police and they took him to the hospital. we don't know much more about that or if there was any followup. authorities revealed they know where the weapons were purchased, when they were purc purchased. and interestingly, the magazines that he was using and the adaptation to this weapon were not legal. so it will be interesting to see if there are any charges pursued as a result of that. so thwe also learned that he's been talking. he made statements to investigators, described to me as disturbing, explaining in some detail about why he did

kid had some sort of problem and finding out later all that worry was wrong, or aborting the fetus because it was too scary. >> yeah, well, thank you for having me to talk about this, i think it is a really important subject, so i'm glad it's being brought up. a couple of things are important in what you said, in the article. one is that it is important to remember that these are screening tests, right? so any time you do a screening test, we identify many people as flags for followup, many of whom turn out actually to be perfectly fine. so that is just the nature of the beast. i think the challenge is, with these prenatal tests that have added very, very rare abnormalities, even a small inaccuracy becomes magnified when a condition is rare. i think these tests are actually extremely accurate for things like down syndrome and some of the other chromosome problems that are more common, that are
