trump has now been arrested and indicted here. we don't know what's going to happen. we don't know if he will be convicted. we don't know what he would be sentenced to if convicted, but in u. s history, there's a little bit of a of a call for record of humans running for office, and some of them being elected from prison is one way to say it. okay so this is rare, but it's a reminder to those folks who are under some misapprehension. attention that president trump could be blocked from running for office if he's in prison or indicted. not so. let's start with eugene debs, that's a socialist candidate for president. five timer in 1920. he gets arrested a few years before for protesting the draft during the first world war under really lousy luck, all the sedition act. he is in prison during the 2019 20 election. he gets almost a million votes from prison. um so you can run for president from prison. eugene debs did it in 1920. we're talking about my hometown, boston. there's also you think we're going to let you off the hook about boston? berman now we all know you loved boston. you
he pleaded not guilty to 34 felony counts of falsifying business records that, by the way, is on the cusp of the 2024 primary season. the former president is now a criminal defendant and a presidential candidate. prosecutors say trump sought to undermine the integrity of the 2016 election and was part of an unlawful plan to suppress negative information , all of it linked to hush money payments made to adult film actress stormy daniels, a playboy model and a doorman at trump tower. we have had available to the office additional evidence that was not in the office's possession prior to my time here, text messages, emails, contemporary. his phone records multiple witnesses. all of that will be as you saw in the fall, born out in a public courtroom in downtown manhattan. now there is no gag order at this moment. but the judge overseeing the case has warned both sides to watch their
constitution, and then you participate in or give aid or comfort into an insurrection, you will be barred from holding federal office. um this is a big deal. now it has obviously passed in the wake of the civil war. it was designed to be prospective. it is actually been applied to two local polls who participated in january. 6th one, west virginia one in new mexico, but until very recently, it's been undiscovered country. but this is the only thing, however, it's embedded in a little thing called the u. s constitution. little thing as it were all right, let's get her horse and buggies and go race. let's go. do that listens s grant. alright, sarah. so interesting. you can be a felon and run for president. but a lot of felons cannot vote in many states. alright new this morning, president biden will soon be heading across the pond to the uk and ireland for some pomp and circumstance and celebration. cnn's mj lee is live outside the white house for us, mj. what more are you learning about this trip? well sarah, this is a trip that president biden has actually been teasing for a while. and
you are disqualified from holding federal office. section five of the 14th amendment directs congress to take legislative action, to enforce that provision. and so the legislation i introduced simply sets forth in about 30 pages the conduct over the former president that demonstrates unequivocally that he was engaged against united states, and therefore is disqualified from holding office again, period. we only have one more week before congress adjourns. but they thought it was very important to keep moving this process forward, because we took an oath to the constitution, like all our other elected officials. it is required to -- they set forth information that disqualifies. one is that if you assist in an insurrection against red states, you can't lead a government to try to destroy or overthrow. i hope we will move next week. >> but congressman, do you have any indication that it will move next week? >> now.

this forward. it will have -- resonate in the house. remember that when madeleine dean talked about the second vote in the impeachment. which was for disqualification. i talked with a number of republicans. i work for republican members before becoming a member of congress. and spoke with quite a number of republican senators during the trial. and reminded him that listen, if you vote for conviction. we only need a majority of the senate to vote for disqualification. and so you can abstain from the second vote or vote no and having the majority will remove him from ever being run for office. i think what's going to happen in the end is the american people will disqualify him. by once again a resounding ali rejecting him if he is a republican nominee. and if he decides to run for office. in the same way they rejected
raphael warnock and herschel walker. i kind of get the feeling that you want senator warnock to win. i would love to know your thoughts about herschel walker. >> herschel walker is not qualified to run. running a football does not make you -- a political person. even running a tv show does not make you qualified. >> what are you trying to say? >> people need to wake up. just because you're in the movies, you're on tv, does not make you qualified. i'm on tv now, i'm not qualified. let's get a real. i think they will do anything in the power to get herschel walker to win. the sad thing is he's not qualified. if you want to start off running for office, start at the bottom. work your way up.
enforce the provision. we took an oath to the constitution of the united states. this is disqualifying. that is if you've been cited an insurrection or assisted in such. as a consequence, donald trump is prohibited from holding office again. we have a responsibility, i believe, to execute that requirement. passing a resolution that details in about 30 pages all of the conduct of the former president as evidence that he did in fact do that. we have other disqualifying information. you have to be 35 years old. you have to be -- our framers of that amendment putting the constitution that the simple idea you can actually run for and federal office if you try to undermine or overthrow the government. you're trying to be a part. of it makes good sense. i will introduce the resolution in the coming weeks with support to my colleagues. >> congresswoman dean, preembargo's going to ask. cicilline says he's going to do that resolution in the coming
herschel is a great athlete. i'm sure he maybe got in other. things but there is no -- when it comes to policy, when it comes to legislation, and when it comes to just basic politics. herschel walker does not have a clue, and it was a just service don't to impose him on the georgia state republican party. i think that many of the people that i relate to in georgia, we have an office in the atlanta. network who are encouraged to support edward warnock. but the at least wanted to have a field fight into a competitive fight. that is not the case. the people who are supporting one are supporting putting a republican in that seat. it has nothing to do with herschel walker. >> t, let me get your reaction to. something show me the reaction of georgia to the story. herschel walker has been a part of multiple scandals with the lady would use documents which
