U.S. moving to impose retaliatory tariffs on countries taxing digital goods

The U.S. plans to enact new retaliatory tariffs on nations that tax digital goods from American internet companies, including those that tax App Store purchases.
The Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) has proposed tariffs that are approximately equal to taxes that various countries are requiring of international tech companies.
Bloomberg estimates that the total annual value of the duties reaches $880 million.
The USTR's retaliatory tariffs would tax imports as much as 25% annually from a list of countries that includes the U.K, India, Spain, Italy, Turkey, and Austria.
The countries currently charge anywhere from a 2% to 5% tariff on digital-services revenue for various online activities. Details vary by country but apply to income from online areas like digital marketplaces, advertising, software-as-a-service, social media, and search engines.

Supreme Court rules in favor of Google in Oracle Java fight

The US Supreme Court has sided with Google in the search company's long-running legal fight with Oracle, declaring Android could use APIs from the Oracle-owned Java.
In Monday's ruling, based on arguments from October 2020, the Supreme Court decided that Google's use of API code from Java was "fair use." The decision, which effectively overrules an earlier federal ruling that Google infringed on the code, allowing the search company to escape paying potentially billions to Oracle.
Google was accused of copying roughly 11,500 lines of code from Java SE's API for use in its development of Android as a mobile platform. Oracle believed this was an infringement of its copyright, prompting lawsuits.

Global chip shortage could last until the middle of 2022, foundries say

The global semiconductor shortage wreaking havoc on industries across the globe could last until 2022 before supply begins to meet demand, though Apple could avoid the worst of it.
Largely caused by a spike in demand for consumer technology during the coronavirus pandemic and other factors, the global chip shortage is causing automotive plants to shut down and smartphone makers to reevaluate release plans.
GlobalFoundries, the third largest chip foundry in the world, said Friday it was planning to invest $1.4 billion to ramp up production capacity in an effort to address the issue. According to
CNBC, it may not make a different until 2022 or later.

Microsoft uses weak arguments to say Surface Pro 7 is better than iPad Pro

Microsoft is continuing in its attempts to claim its Surface Pro 7 is better than Apple's products with another comparison video, putting its tablet against the iPad Pro.
Microsoft launched a marketing campaign in January that compared the Surface Pro 7 against Apple's products, with a video pitting the MacBook Pro against Microsoft's tablet. In April's second attempt, Microsoft is doing the same thing, but this time against the iPad Pro.
Following the same formula as the first video, the second "Still the Better Choice" piece on YouTube takes the form of a tech comparison video. It also follows the same pattern of pointing out perceived benefits of having a Surface Pro 7, in areas that it attempts to show the iPad Pro as weak.

In defense of Apple's iPhone Leather Wallet with MagSafe

As a thin wallet fan, the idea of ditching my wallet entirely has been appealing for some time. While I don't yet live in that wallet-less utopia, Apple's frequently maligned iPhone Leather Wallet with MagSafe is great, despite what you may have heard from critics.
I've been using Apple's MagSafe wallet in combination with the iPhone 12 Pro and Apple's official MagSafe silicon case since they all launched last fall. Depending on the thickness of your cards, it can hold two or three — in my case, a driver's license, a credit card, and a New York City MetroCard. Since switching to the Apple MagSafe wallet, I've also picked up a money clip, for the times when I need cash.

Review: XP-Pen Innovator 16 is an inexpensive upgrade for digital illustrators

Drawing resolution of 5080LPI
Out of the box
The first thing you notice when getting the Innovator out of its packaging is how solid and relatively light the device is. Its weight is not overwhelming, as it is heavy enough to stay put on the desk while in use.
It has the same general feel as a high-quality tablet, such as an iPad. There's also a certain sleekness to it that seems to aesthetically fit in with other Apple devices.
Customizable buttons on the side of the tablet, as well as a dial, can help improve your artistic workflow.
XP-Pen uses a custom 3-in-1 cable for connecting the device to your computer. This is a nice feature that ensures you do not have to deal with a ton of wires running across your desk while you are attempting to draw.

HomePod dropped, iMac Pro ditched, and OS X celebrated — March 2021 in review

March 2021 was a busy, even hectic month for Apple, even though we didn't get any events and the company actually discontinued more products than it launched.
We will never know this for sure, but it looks as if Apple did launch something in March 2021 — a mole hunt. As we started the month, there were constant, building expectations that there would be an event on March 16. Then, no, it would be March 23.
There are always practically as many rumors about there being an Apple event as there are predictions about what will be launched at them. This time, it's suspected that Apple itself primed the pump by letting slip a false date to, presumably, selected people.
