a blue ribbon in that wine festival. thanks larry for taking me. but the terror muscles they were rusty. i imagine it's how the view panelists feel about their brains. but i realized i needed to get back if inn shape quick. the killing is a helpful reminder that hair like smallpox and chris cuomo, never really goes away. especially when 9/11 ploters have assistance like the taliban. i had no idea he was in afghanistan hanging with the taliban, and not in a good way at the end of a rope. turns out he was staying at a house apparently belonging to interior contributor, and not a bad place to die. it's amazing what you can get from an airbnb. although i don't think the owner will be too happy about the condition the guests left the place in. that cleaning bill's going to succeed. how to get bone matter out of

how could an attack on the united states be successful, originating from afghanistan? come through a broken border. we have a million get-aways, people that got away almost already this year and we're doubling the number of illegal immigrants crossing our southern border this year versus last year because the biden administration did away with remain in mexico. they went back to catch and release and our border is overwhelmed. so how easy would it be for a terrorist group to penetrate this broken border? the border patrol is becoming a processing center of trying to process illegal immigrants by the hundreds of thousands, millions, which leaves a gap in our system. so the primary defense of the border, which is eyes and ears on crime, terrorism, is now given to processing illegal immigranting.

doctor are awesome. thank you all. i just wanted to say that. >> martha: glad she did well. >> a great hospital. so here's what i sent to secretary mayorkas. the presence of al-quaida in afghanistan is beyond my imagination within a year after the fall of afghanistan to the taliban. just imagine for a moment the number 1 leader of al-quaida was staying in a home owned by the number 2 commander of the taliban in kabul. that tells me that not only is al-quaida present, they're welcome there. now, when is the last time you can remember that america was on the receiving end of a bad deal in afghanistan? when the taliban were in charge, they created safe havens for al-qaeda and the rest is history. the 9-11 attackers here and a lot of them are visa overstays.

the tragic u.s. exit from afghanistan as we remember led to the killing by terrorists of 13 young american service members in those terrible days at the airport in kabul. senator graham says this killing of al-zawahiri could trigger a devastating retaliatory attack on our homeland and that one of the likeliest places to come through are southern border. he joins me now. good to have you with us. nice to see you as always. >> thank you. >> martha: i understand you're putting together a letter that you're going to send to the department of homeland security head, mayorkas. what will you be stressing to him in that letter? >> number 1, i am, but i want to do a shout out, if you don't mind for a second, mount sinai south nassau hospital. did some complicated surgery on my niece. the security folks, the administration, the nurses and

to go after the targets. >> matt, to that end, one year ago was the withdrawal from afghanistan, it was chaotic and much criticized. in a moment with democrats breaking with the president. one of the chief ones that we do not have the ability to hold terrorists to account. that suggests this is not the case. >> that is correct, this suggests this is not the case that we do have the ability to maintain pressures against organizations like al qaeda. but the key challenge is we're now also recognizing on the flip side of this coin that afghanistan is a safe haven for terrorism and al qaeda. so. we need a robust counterterrorism area in the region. does it require us being physically present in afghanistan? maybe not. how do we make sure that the resources are made available, whether it was the biden

most wanted to deceased. let's go first to cnn's barbara starr, live at the pentagon, barbara, this is a big moment of closure for 9/11 families and america overall. what other detail are we learning about the operation? >> well, this was a man with $25 million on his head and now he is dead, and for the war on terrorism that is nothing but good news, al zawahiri was killed by two missiles fired from a drone and that by itself is very interesting because of course in kabul, the u.s. has been out of afghanistan for close to a year now. publicly no u.s. troops, no u.s. personnel on the grounds, no planes, no aircraft no ability to launch a manned strike, we're today, because the u.s. can't get in there if a pilot or crew were to go down. so, same thing, you can't put special forces on the ground. that's all of what we've been told. what we do not know about this

has been wrong from day one. taking our soldiers out of afghanistan, allowing al zawahiri to retire in afghanistan as if he was a safe haven for him should point everything out that we need to do. we've been weeks, we've shown weakness, and we are showing our weakness all the way around the world. afghanistan has been a wreck, it's our fault, and the administration has led us to this point. >> carley: clearly something that should be celebrated, but some people have pointed out that the fact that al zawahiri was in afghanistan proves that al qaeda still has a presence that despite president biden think otherwise and it also violated the agreement, so what is the state of terrorism in afghanistan right now? >> well, it's alive and kicking. it seems that what we've done is put ourselves back in the position we were 20 years ago. we have a growing threat that

living in afghanistan and secretary of state antony blinken and think that the taliban has violated the doha agreement by harboring him in afghanistan. so what was the fallout from this be and how does the u.s. respond to this? >> right, that is very significant. just because he's been taken out does not excuse biden's botched afghanistan pullout and remember, the u.n. told us last month that al zawahiri was living in kabul, that he was active and communicating freely. that is a safe harbor. this taliban government, no surprise, is basically giving safe harbor to some senior al qaeda operatives. there is a lot behind that rivalry between the solomon, al qaeda, it's a very complex picture. what we know is that afghanistan is, again, a harbor for
