has been wrong from day one. taking our soldiers out of afghanistan, allowing al zawahiri to retire in afghanistan as if he was a safe haven for him should point everything out that we need to do. we've been weeks, we've shown weakness, and we are showing our weakness all the way around the world. afghanistan has been a wreck, it's our fault, and the administration has led us to this point. >> carley: clearly something that should be celebrated, but some people have pointed out that the fact that al zawahiri was in afghanistan proves that al qaeda still has a presence that despite president biden think otherwise and it also violated the agreement, so what is the state of terrorism in afghanistan right now? >> well, it's alive and kicking. it seems that what we've done is put ourselves back in the position we were 20 years ago. we have a growing threat that
al qaeda after bin laden was killed in 2011. he also helped plot the bombing of the uss cole during 17 american sailors in 2,000. families of 9/11 victims calling the strike a "significant step forward," but military experts say it is a major blow to the terrorist organization. >> al zawahiri always has been, as you said, the master planner and operator, so him leaving the scene, both as the designated leader and real follower of bin laden as well as the key operator over the decades as a major hit to al qaeda. >> but the terrorist leader's death in kabul raising concerns about the state of afghanistan after u.s. withdrawal in a president biden let you. republicans believe it proves that seeding the country to the taliban paves the way for an al qaeda resurgent. secretary of state said the

built up over 20 years of effort in counterterrorism here to make sure we're doing this in full measure are on full display now. >> nick, what do we know about al zawahiri's success. >> currently in iran, with the suggestion that had may have recently moved into afghanistan. that takes a major burning issue off the plate of iranians because they would effectively have been harboring the new leader of al qaeda. we know not a vast amount. look at the al masri, killed in tehran. and what it's like being in the top tier of a major organization right now, isis, al qaeda, you have a pretty short time span. and they've taken out northerly leader. moving into an organization that still has the branding, still has the ambition, certainly, a safe haven in the afghanistan.
