political reasons is absolutely absurd. and donald trump knows that s absurd. he knows it because he spent four hours that day watching the video tapes from behind the cloister walls of the white house in the warm embrace of his secret service security team. so he knows exactly what happened that day. he knows those people were rioters and its direction us and many of them have to their credit stepped up and taken responsibility for that. the thing that i cannot get past anderson is how many people give him a pass for saying absurd and sickening only false things like this. and you re right, these false hoods that he, that he throws out in front of his rallies and supportive it is for political advantage, but it comes with the cost of driving up risk to people in the system, law issues. and then the other rare exception, of course, was recent abc interview where the president was asked whether he would pardon his son whether he would rule that out actually, and his answer, a one word answer was simply yes. he would rule that out. the president anderson has been really clear that he is going to accept the outcome of the trial no matter what happens. and that he s just not going to comment on his son s case as the jury is deliberating that, of course, is in line with the president s sort of broader view that you just don t comment on a trial file or a legal proceeding when it is still making its way through the legal system and i should just note that that is an important area where the president had sought to draw a contrast between himself and the former president, whom he has accused of trying to put his thumb on the legal system on an influence in a political way other areas and other issues at the former president has dealt with this. of course, the president has made clear he sees as being wholly inappropriate mj lee. thanks. much at the white house tonight, joining us now cnn legal analyst norm eisen and jennifer rodgers, also former federal judge. sure. shen lin norm what do you make of closing arguments? do you think he s gonna get convicted? i thought both sides did an able job in closing arguments. the prosecution hammering the evidence that hunter biden was using or addicted to drugs before and after this key october 12 two 23rd period. they don t have actual evidence throughout the day, but they have yes. and the judge in directed that you don t have to prove the de you have to show that hunter biden was actually engaged in using or was an addict around that time and they have him checking into rehab before and after the various witnesses. but anderson abbe lowell is a very capable defense lawyer and he leaned into that critical gap. and the state of mind question this has to be knowing. that means it hunter biden had to say on purpose, not by mistake i m not an addict. i m not a user. and lowell argues well, he thought he was not an addict at that time, and there s no proof he was using prosecution ahead on points not impossible. you get a defense verdict or a hung jury what, do you think? yeah, i agree. i mean, i think they ll probably get a conviction here. there s a very narrow path for the defense to win this. they really do have to lean into this knowingly and they can t prove it on these days, but prosecutors always say follow your common sense, right? like the guy has been in rehab, people around that time, there s these text messages it s about dealing and the hallie biden testimony about paraphernalia in the car. and so use your common sense, was that argument does that make sense to you that well, i didn t think i was an addict on that day and therefore, i signed this document, say i m not an addict. i think it s the only argument that the defense has a question is, can the jury accepted and i think contrary my fellows here, i friends here. maybe maybe some jury juror or more jurors who are sympathetic to what he s gone through and may have experienced something like that sometime in their life i m going to cut him a little slack and say well, on that day, maybe you didn t use so that takes care of the use. and as far as being an attic well, maybe that day he thought he d come out of it and was no longer an attic because he was doing better even if felt if he fell off two days later so they might have a basis to draw that distinction if they want to, in your experience on the bench, i mean, is it tough for juries to see past this is the son of the president or someone to be famous very tough, very tough. and the family is a cut one way or the other. i mean, just think, well, i think it could cut in his favor the families there. it s a high-profile family. somebody might indeed think that he s going through this because of that. and again, as we all know, it only takes one to cause a hung jury. so i m not as confident as my colleagues that there s gonna be a conviction here, but i wouldn t put my money on a non conviction either. you know, the prosecution is aware of this risk because the first thing the prosecutor said in closing was all those people sitting behind the defendant are not evidenced that s pretty unusual in my experience. that i actually has a little aggressive veto i mean, here are these people there to support him. lots of people on the jurors, the jury have had addiction in their families. and here s his loving family there to support them and they re going to point out of and be like don t pay attention to those people. i thought it was a little overly aggressive action, if anything, it could hide why it could have been it can boomerang because they re going to look over it when he said that, look right over at those three rows think about parents and sisters and children and all the rest of it. they could just override this if they want to know and there s also some breaking news in trump s classified documents. kids, judge aileen cannon denied the defense s effort to dismiss the indictment, but she also struck a paragraph from jack smith s indictment anderson this was a motion that the defendants had brought attacking this indictment every which way from sunday. they lost almost everything. and the question we should ask is, why did judge cannon for these relatively easy unexceptional challenges takes so long dragging it out. she didn t give one gimme to the defense it s one paragraph, paragraph 36. it has to do with what happened at bedminster that conversation about of the iran documents it s there as to give notice that the prosecution is going to introduce prior bad acts, but striking it was virtually or enough, judge and judge. judge, what what s going on? in my mind, i was pleased that she got this done so fast from may 22 to june content for her is practically speedy, and i assume that the talking point document they handed me was true i would never have considered that might be ally. the cnn reports about operation fouled anchor have led to multiple federal investigations congressional hearings in an apology from the head of the coast guard, we fail to provide the safe environment that every member of the coast guard deserves. norenberg says, after treatment of hunter bye. now, this was after the criminal indictments of them, but before this most recent trial, look at is 66% set of americans say that the legal system, treatment of hunter biden has been fair. in fact according to the polling, if anything, they think it s been not harsh enough on him. just 27% of americans think that the legal system has been unfair. so the fact is, most americans have no problem with hunter biden being on trial. his favorite bility ratings are quite low and it s something thank when you look at the polling, why the white house i think is genuinely worried because he s definitely in their minds potentially a liability for me, at least outside of joe biden and think that, well, the important thing to remember is that it s hunter biden? correct. that s the head of hamas s military in gaza, the most powerful person in the organization, right now, yahya sinwar, he was a blinken said a short time ago there are those who have influenced, but influences one thing actually getting a decision made is the another thing i don t think anyone other than the hamas leadership in gaza actually are the ones who can make make decisions that s what we their burgers have dropped nearly 17%. motor vehicle thefts have decreased about 17%. so across the board and regions across the united how did it states they re seeing these drops based on this initial data i particularly want it focused in on murders. now, there s a caveat, obviously, this prelim preliminary, the year isn t up yet, but murder right now is down by 80% in places like boston, over 40% in cities like new orleans seattle, baltimore, and fill it dell fea, murder spiked about 30% during the pandemic, but then started to fall. i ve been talking with crime data analysts who say that if these numbers now hold, we could see a potential historic drop here throughout the rest of this year. so as we look at this trend some, obviously some promising data when you look at prime across the country, john, look this is the type of data that i imagine everyone, all of the evidence that we have so far is showing a basically a double decline relative to what it was last year at this point, last year, it was down about ten or 11%. now we re talking 19 or 20%. it s plausible that this will be by far the largest one-year decline in american history. so obviously one of the people excited. our chief medical correspondent, dr. sanjay gupta is year. what are we talking about here? sanjay? good morning, john yeah, potentially a big deal here there are no drugs to cure or to prevent alzheimer. so what we re talking about here are medications that can slow the progression of symptoms once they start. and if this gets approved this would now be the second drug that could do that sort of thing. as you know, john, the fda advisory committee that s an independent committee. they make their recommendations. they recommended this be approved. the fda usually follows her guidance, not always, but this is certainly a good sign and that approval could come by the end of the year so for this particular study, they looked at 1,700 people, just over 1,700 people between the ages of 6085 and these were people who had mild cognitive impairment. so this was early part of their diagnosis, early part of their disease and they gave them this drug and what they found was that over time, over 76 weeks that about a 29% reduction in cognitive decline. so they got worse, more slowly. it s not that they reverse the disease. it s not that they stalled the disease. they got worse more slowly, about 29%. so that is the big number in terms of benefit. the committee was paying attention to. on the flip side of that, let me tell you quickly, john, is the risks there are risks of these drugs specifically something known as aria, which stands for amyloid related imaging abnormality. you don t need to remember that, but basically it s these bleeds that can occur in the brain in response to the drug and what they found was about 37% of the people who are getting the medication compared to placebo, 14% did have evidence of these, these changes in the brain related to the amyloid. three people did die as well in that trial. so that was something that committee looked at very, very closely and still determined that the benefits outweigh the risks. john sanjay two very important questions. number one, how do you say the drugs named? because i can t make it out. i can t make sense of that in number two, how exactly does this one work yeah so the nonna mab and mab, which you hear at the end of a lot of these drugs, stands for monoclonal antibody. the other drug that i was talking about, lecanemab also a monoclonal antibody and a lot of people know monoclonal antibodies. they learned about them during the pandemic. but you re essentially giving the antibodies as part of the drug let me show you this quick animation of how it works. you know, amyloid is this protein plaque that builds up in the brain. when you give these medications, it can basically disrupt some of the building blocks of those plaques not allowing them to form as well or clearing them after they ve already formed so that s that s basically how these monoclonal antibody drugs work. and again, this might be the second one. what i tell you one interesting thing about this, this trial the ilo liliya suggesting that they follow the amount of amyloid that people have in their brain. and if the amyloid clears they suggest that maybe just stopping the drug it s a monthly infusion. but they say if the amyloid has gone no need to continue taking the drug when you typically think of the drugs, you think of them as lifelong for the rest of your life. maybe not the case here we ll see how the fda weighs in on that the nonna map sounds like sesame street phenomena to me, which is how i ll remember from now on how many people are we talking about that this could benefit hard to remember yeah. so you got about in the country, got about 6 million people who have alzheimer disease carry the diagnosis, but about 1 million who fall into that early stage category. again, keep in mind someone goes in there now developing early symptoms, sometimes hard to diagnose but potentially 1 million people taking the medication, right now. that is the population. will see in the future if some of these medications get approved for people who are further along in their diagnosis while got moderate or severe now so many people take any any promising news when it comes to this is the picture kate you ll remember it. lots of people describing it as some sort of hellscape or him bathing in blood. but it s become a very famous photo. it s become a really big thing on social media. so they re getting lots of attention for it. also. i mean, it is a bit an official portion of the case. i mean, there are people in this group gonna get in trouble from it for this. i mean, let s i think so because from what we can tell, there isn t glass along the front of it either, but it does look as though no paint was used, there s certainly some glue that was used. i think trump was saying this there s never been people treated. more horrifically. then j six hostages. but those j6 warriors, they were worries, but they were really more than anything else. they are victims of what happened. all they were doing is protesting a rigged election that s what they were doing and then the police say go and go in, go in, go in, water is set-up that was that s the former president of the united states sunday in las vegas. and just to refresh your memory, these are the people he was honoring specifically the ones in prison for crimes they committed on january 6, or jail awaiting trial. and it s certainly not the first time he s called these people hostages ladies and gentlemen, please rise for the harb unfairly treated. january 6, tass ditches it s now part of his routine that recording he s standing in saluting four features him saying the pledge of allegiance while these inmates, whom he calls hostages sing the star spangled banner by the way, the former president began calling them hostages in november after actual hostages were taken by hamas, four of whom were freed in a daring military operation in gaza after almost eight months of mental and physical torment at the hands of hamas. and we ll have more on that tonight. but those are actual hostages. trump would have you believe the january 6 inmates are hostages and also warriors and victims? he said that to victims he also claims were invited in by police. so they re warriors and their hostages and their victims, and they re also according to him, lovers the love the 11 year i ve never seen anything like it. there was also a love fest between the police, the capitol police and the people that walked down to the capital so stir that in with all the rest. and here s the former president is reshaping the attack on the capitol. peaceful protesters full of love invited into the capitol by police who loved them and return. but who somehow tricked them and made them victims, who then turned into warriors who are now being held hostage. let me introduce you to one of these man who s presumably a warrior and trump size. daniel rodriguez. this is his photo was posted on social media by username deepstate dogs. rodriguez was part of the mob that attack police with metal poles and bateson stolen riot shields and chemical spray. and in his case has stun gun he attacked officer michael fan-owned with it, who later suffered a heart attack and traumatic brain injury rodriguez pleaded guilty like so many others have and was sentenced to 12.5 years in prison. his is one he s one of the people, the former president is calling a hostage and it shouldn t come as a surprise that trump is unfamiliar with what a warrior actually is. casey s watching, here s one from d-day somebody who was actually what is your reaction to the foreign president calling the riders warriors and hostages and victims i mean, it s, it s thick and disgusting. obviously. i think we have to be careful to not allow this outrage to just numb us like this really should be. and thank you for putting this at the top of the show. there should be at the top of but every new show anywhere in the country at how agreed justs and terrible this as they, they re not warriors. the ones that went into the capital. most of them, if not all of them, have been arrested and tried. and interestingly, anderson, at the beginning when they started to get arrested, they were remorseful. and then this right-wing ecosphere put their arms around them singing the national anthem and stuff. and in that process, convinced them that they were victims and have made them martyrs and heroes. this is not something americans that aren t completely sold out to the cult should be, should accept and we should have this be a fresh outrage every day when he does stuff like this. it s also entering andrew. i mean, i know some actual warriors. they re not people who usually view themselves as victims or just sort of helpless victims. very often, how dangerous do you think it is for law enforcement and andrew and the public when you have the former president gaslighting his supporters because, i mean back in 2022, there was a guy upset about federal authorities searching mar-a-lago i ll go for classified documents. he was killed after trying to shoot his way into an fbi field office in ohio. it feels like du the congressman s point the former president just says this stuff and people just kind of ignore it. but i mean it has repercussions potentially yeah. so let s get the facts out first on this warriors claim. so as of january 6, 20 in 24, which is most recent numbers, i could find. we ve got 1,200 and 1,265 people have been charged in as a part of that january 6 case, 718 of them on that by that de had already gone into court. raise your right hand, sworn to tell the truth, and then said did it i m guilty to the whether it s trespassing or obstruction of official procedure or assault on police officers and others. so the idea that these people are somehow being held against their will for political reasons is absolutely absurd. and donald trump knows that s absurd. he knows it because he spent four hours that day watching the video tapes from behind the cloistered walls of the white house in the warm embrace of his secret service security team. so he knows exactly what happened that day. he knows those people were rioters and it s directionless and many of them have to their credit stepped up and taken responsibility for that. the thing that i cannot get past anderson is how many people give him a pass for saying absurd and secondly, false things like this. and you re right, these falsehoods that he, that he throws out in front of his rallies in support first, it is for political advantage, but it comes at the cost of driving up risk to people in the system. law enforcement prosecutors, and others. and you made the perfect example. ricky schifflin, who was outraged by what he undoubtedly heard the president say after the mar-a-lago rate decided to take it out violently on the fbi s cincinnati field office. that could happen any day anywhere around the country to any fbi agent or other federal officer by somebody similarly misguided. also, i m congressman. it s just i mean, it s kinda it s just i mean, it s sickening that the former president basically solve this so the october 7 hostages being held by hamas and islamic jihad and others as a branding opportunity and i think according to the washington post in november is when he started using the term hostages for the for those who have been found guilty of crimes on on january said x and re-brand braise, branding them january 6, hostages. i mean, it s it s really worked it is really warped in that was various student view to notice is that he never used hostages until there were real hostages. some of which are still being held, some have been killed that are being held against their will. i mean, look, i m probably started with marjorie taylor greene two she she came up with some of that, but i think the biggest thing to take off of what m kay six stood up, lindsey graham, i m done with this guy. we had a hell of a run, but i m done. you think of like marco rubio, all these people that know better, that just keep their heads down and don t say a word. this is threatening the very fabric of democracy because all we have to have for democracy to survive is a basic compact that your vote, you can vote, your vote will count and the person that wins wins. that s what donald trump was tearing apart that basic contact contract. that is the only requirement for democracy to survive. and he is turn these people that violated the rule of law into martyrs. and by the way, if we don t have rule and law in this country, democracy can t survive either. and he is just an absolute il, fit mentally flawed is probably the nicest way i can say it. former president and candidate for future president in america has to reject him. john i know you have new reporting on the former president s meeting today are interviewing with probation officials, which is a normal part of this procedure. what happened? so today, donald trump with his lawyer, todd blanche, over a microsoft teams connection, had this virtual meeting to prepare to assist probation department in new york city with preparing the pre-sentencing report that goes to the judge it was an unusual meeting in that present there was the commissioner of the new york city department of probation wanted to homes her general counsel, bridget hamline, and the probation officer who would normally be there by himself or with another officer who would do the interview. the interview was led by commissioner homes and a city official who was briefed on the interview afterwards told me that at all times donald trump answered the questions which were things about what are your living situation any health issues, family history, where do you spend more time? new york or florida? a lot of things that don t while trump, but thank everybody already knows. but commissioner home said these are the normal questions we re going to put you through these questions. they said he was polite, he was respectful and that at the end of the meeting he wished them well and ended the call with be safe and we just got speaking in new york city mayor giuliani, former mayor giuliani s mug shot from arizona authorities. he s been he was hard to get a subpoena a subpoena to fund. they finally did. this is his his his mug shot that s not the mug shot. will try to get it he s pleaded not guilty there to charges of trying to overturn the 2020 election results what what happened to him i mean, well, this has been an amazing rise and fall from a prosecutor built on the image of thomas dewey going after the mom i ve been crooked politicians to a mouthpiece for donald trump as president. and then the lead counsel. by the way, this is the mug shot that was another mug shot of his, which clearly he s gotten the lesson from that prior mug shot because this one is smiling at least that s right. the prior mug shot was from the georgia cases. so now he s on his second mug shot, but he has he has he has hitched himself to the donald trump wagon, but he s also been through multiple breakups and divorces. he s lost millions and millions of dollars. he s in bankruptcy, has apartment is up for sale and it was amazing to see someone who was the face and the voice of law and order in new york city for so long and then the mayor for two terms. a law and order meir, be someone who s going on his second mug shot and who has been disbarred and barred from the practice of law in multiple places endrew in a series of interviews over the past week, the foreign president has talked about, been asked about this whole retribution seeking. he talked about running. i am your retribution. he had said two months ago oh i just want to play some of what he said well, revenge does take time. i will say that does. and sometimes revenge can be justified. so i have to be honest, sometimes it can look when this election is over based on what they ve done. i would have every right to go after them and it s easy because it s joe biden but very terrible thing. it s a terrible precedent for our country does that mean the next president does it to them? that s really the question so in terms of if he is president using the levers of the justice department, the fbi, to go after political opponents in a second term, how would that how would he go about that? i mean, how how feasible is that? well, i think it s entirely feasible. i mean, it s it s interesting to me that across those interviews interviews with people who are like dr. phil and others who are trying to kind of get him to walk away from those claims. he soft petals it a little bit, but then you get down further in front of the rally crowds and really hits at home it is absolutely clear, said it many times in front of many different people. he intends to take the levers of power if he is reelected and use them for his own personal retribution, goals, which in and of itself is so unbelievably offensive should be to any american than any american president would purport to do such a thing. can he do it? sure, he can do it if he follows through with the plan that he s already laid out, this 2025 plan that they ve talked about. you ll replace those folks insignificant positions. the department of justice and the fbi and other lawn federal law enforcement entities with flunk who will do whatever he says so the first steps in this process of trumping up charges against people baselessly and throwing them in jail could actually happen. i think it gets tougher when those cases start to make their way through the courts but that takes a long time. and so i think it s reasonable that people who think they might be on the former president s enemies list start thinking about what does that look like? what could that, how can that actually play out? in your lives? and i think people are having those sunday at nine on cnn the trial lasted six days, hundred times guilt or innocence on three federal gun charges is now in the hands of a delaware jury more now in the charges the trial and closing arguments from cnn s as paula reid in a major show of support, hunter s family members and pastor taking up three rows in court today have known the family you don t abandon your friends and family in closing arguments prosecutors pointed to the gallery of supporters and said, those people are not evidence and reminded the jury that no one is above the law. the prosecution directly address the most difficult element they have to prove that hunter biden knowingly lied on a federal background check form when purchasing the gun at the center of this case, the defendant knew he used crack and was addicted to crack at the relevant time period, adding that hunter would have been aware from his time in rehab that he had a problem with drugs maybe if he had never gone to rehab, he could argue he didn t know. he was an addict at the end of his closing, prosecutor leo wise circled back to testimony from hunters daughter, naomi, on friday, when she told the jury that when she returned her father s car to him on october 19, 2018, she did not see any other but in some drugs. but why is reminded the jury, hunter s former girlfriend hallie biden, his brother, beau biden s widow, had testified that when she found the gun in the same car days later, she found it alongside drug paraphernalia defense attorney abbe lowell countered, warning jurors not to convict his client in properly adding it s time to end this case. he compared the trial to a magician s trick, trying to dupe the jury, saying, watch this hand, pay no attention to the other one. hey, accused prosecutors of cherry picking evidence to present a more timeline of hunter s drug use and said his client was not lying when he marked down that he was not an addict on that federal form. lowell attacks two of hunter s former girlfriends, who both served as prosecution witnesses in this case. he noted zoe kestan took pictures of hunter with drugs, but not in the key month of october 2018. he also reminded the jury that hallie biden could not remember specific details about when she found the gun in hunter s car? and noted hunter was the one who told hallie to file a police report for the missing gun after she threw it out hunter did not take the stand to testify in his own defense in this case, a move that would have come with potential rewards and definite risks the jury will be back here in court tomorrow at 9:00 a.m. to continue their deliberations. it s impossible to say how long it it will take them to reach a decision on these three counts. but i was important earlier today, and then we re also attentive as the judge explain the instructions page by page line by line. these are of course, the rules that they need to follow as they undertake this historic decision anderson. all right. thanks so much more now. and how pros and biden mishandling the weight for the verdict and the biden family presence throughout the trial, including the first lady, who in back and forth during the french visit to be in court with her steps on cnn s mj leaves at the white house for us tonight. what are things like at the white house as they await the jury? well, you know, the trial of the president s son has been an extraordinarily sensitive issue for this white house. and the president. and it is not a coincidence that the president himself has barely commented on the ongoing trial. we heard him, of course, make a statement at the beginning of the trial thing that he loves his son and that he he is proud of him for showing resilience as he has fought addiction issues and then the other rare exception, of course, was in a recent abc interview where the president was asked asked whether he would pardon his son, whether he would rule that out actually, and his answer, a one word answer was simply yes. he would rule that out. the president anderson so it has been really clear that he is going to accept the outcome of the trial no matter what happens, and that he s just not going to comment on his son s case as three is deliberating that of course, is in line with the president sort of broader view that you just don t comment on a trial or a legal proceeding when it is still making its way through the legal system. and i should just note that that is an important area where the president had sought to draw a contrast between himself and the former president whom he has accused of trying to put his thumb on the legal system on an influence in a political way. other areas and other issues at the former president has dealt with this. of course, the president has made clear he sees as being wholly inappropriate. mj lee, thanks so much at the white house tonight joining us now cnn legal analyst norm eisen and jennifer rodgers, also former federal judge. sure. shannon lynne norm. what do you make of closing arguments? do you think he s going to get convicted? i thought both sides did an able job in closing arguments. the prosecution hammering the evidence that hunter biden and it was using or addicted to drugs before and after this key october 12th, two 23rd period. they don t have actual evidence about the de, but they have yes. and the judge instructed that you don t have to prove the de you have to show that hunter biden was actually engage aged in using or was an addict around that time and they have him checking into rehab before and after the various witnesses. but anderson, abbe lowell is a very capable defense lawyer and he leaned into that critical gap and the state of mind question this has to be knowing. that means it, hunter biden had to say on purpose, not by mistake i m not an addict. i m not a user. and low argues, well, he thought he was not an addict at that time. there s no proof he was using prosecution ahead on points, not impossible. you get a defense verdict or a hung jury what do you think yeah, i agree. i mean, i think they ll probably get a conviction here. there s a very narrow path for the defense to win this. they really do have to lean into this knowingly and they can t prove it on these days, but prosecutors always say, follow your common sense, right? like the guy has been in rehab, people around that time, there s these text messages about dealing and the hallie biden testimony about paraphernalia in the car. and so use your common sense. that argument does that make sense to you that well, i didn t think i was an addict on that day. and therefore, i signed this document, say i m not an addict. i think it s the only argument that the defense has. the question is, can the jury accepted? and i think contrary my fellows here, i friends here maybe maybe some jury juror or more jurors who are sympathetic to what he s gone through. and may have experienced something like that. sometime in their life i m going to cut him a little slack and say well, on that day, maybe you didn t use so that takes care of the use and as far as being an addict, well, maybe that day he thought he d come out of it and was no longer an attic because he was doing better even if felt if he fell off two days later so they might have a basis to draw that distinction if they want to, in your experience on the bench, i mean, is it tough for juries to see past this is the son of the president or someone to be famous, very tough, very tough. and the fans is a cut one way or the other. i mean, i think well, i think it could cut in his favor the families there. it s a high-profile family. somebody might indeed think that he s going through this because of that. and again, as we all know, it only takes one to cause a hung jury. so i m not as confident as my colleagues that there s going to be a conviction here, but i wouldn t put my money on a non conviction either. you the prosecution is aware of this risk because the first thing that prosecutors said in closing was all those people sitting behind the defendant are not evidence that s pretty unusual in my area is that that actually i thought a little aggressive i mean, here are these people there to support him? lots of people on the jurors, the jury have had addiction in their families. and here s his loving family there to support him and they re going to point out of and be like, don t pay attention to those people. i thought it was a little overly aggressive, if anything, it could have i liked it. it could have been it can boomerang because they re going to look over it when he said that, look right over at those three rows. think about parents and sisters and children and all the rest of it. they could just override this if they want to know and there s also some breaking news in trump s classified documents. kids, judge aileen cannon denied a defense s effort to dismiss the indictment, but she also struck a paragraph from jack smith s indictment anderson this was a motion that the defendants had brought attacking this indictment every which way from sunday they lost almost everything. and the question we should ask is, why did judge cannon for these relatively easy unexceptional challenges take so long dragging it out. she didn t give one gimme to the defense it s one paragraph, paragraph 36. it has to do with what happened at bedminster that conversation about iran documents. it s there as to give notice that the prosecution is going to introduce prior bad acts, but striking it was virtually or nothing, judge. judge. judge, what what s going on? well, in my mind, i was pleased that she got this done so fast from may 22 to june in tenth for her is practically speedy. so i was impressed that she didn t sit on this. obvious motion for very long. i have to tell you that motion is made in every case and it s never granted duplicitous snus multiplicities never works but they make it to preserve the record. nobody expects to win those motions. you do it to preserve so it didn t take her all that long to get this one done. i mean, given the history of other things, she has been delaying on, are you surprised by the length this thing is dragging out of in general in all the motion. but this motion was relatively fast. that s a good sign. maybe she s hearing us talking about her and she s getting her work done. who knows, but this thought was relatively fast. and as far as that foro for be the similar act is very clear that she had she is saying but at trial, there may be a basis to offer this evidence justice, and belong in the indictment. get it doesn t relate directly to the charge. jennifer, does this impact the chance to this thing moving forward faster i mean, the problem is we have so many outstanding motions that are complicated, time-consuming problematic seep emotions, the classified information, protection actin, and so on. it s just we re not moving forward in a way that it s good for going to trial. there s just so much should have saved those pages and all those words. to resolve the other leg gig motions that she has on found, and what disposition decisions were made. we assured them the hey, we re handling this. we ve got this, we re taking this seriously. thanks for coming forward but it turns out actually the coast guard hadn t told congress. norenberg didn t know it, but the investigation was quietly closed. so the decades of assault were kept hidden from congress and the public until a cnn investigation revealed at all last summer, victims were never given any recourse. i trusted the coast guard implicitly and i assume that the talking point document they handed me was true i would never have considered that that might be ally. the cnn reports about operation fouled anchor have led to multiple federal investigations congressional hearings in an apology from the head of the coast guard, we fail to provide the safe environment that every member of the coast guard deserves. norenberg says, after seeing cnn s report, she feared she had been used in the cover-up. she found the talking i hope it puts more pressure on netanyahu to agree to his own government s proposal for a cease-fire agreement that president biden has been championing. i think the loss of gantz really fractures unity in israel at a time when it desperately needs it but i do think and hope it puts political pressure on netanyahu to end the fighting and the killing, and come to an agreement so hostages can be released and civilians can try to restore their lives. hundreds of palestinians were killed in the raid that rescued was four israeli hostages yesterday. , and that impact negotiations? the initial response in israel is celebration at the release of four hostages who have been there for eight months . that is to be celebrated, but the loss of life incurred in doing that is something that i think is horrifying, and i would hope the israeli military and the israeli government take a moment of reflection about the high cost of their operations generally in gaza. one more question on israel before we turn to domestic issues. there is also talk of opening up another front in the north to deal with hezbollah in lebanon. would that be a wise thing for israel to do? i am not a military adviser but i think israel has its hands full right now with the operations in gaza and the occupation of the west bank to open up really a third front on the lebanese border with hezbollah, i think, would really tax the israeli military in ways that go back to rivaling the war of 1973, and i hope it can be avoided. let s turn our attention stateside. mckay [ inaudible ] reports about how terrified europe is of a second trump presidency reading quote, one word came up again and again when i asked european officials about the stakes of the election. existential. but here s what senator tom cotton had to say about ending the current war on european soil in ukraine. the way to have peace in europe and for that matter, peace and stability around the world is to remove joe biden from the white house on election day this year and return donald trump. that is how we will get back to peace and stability. congressman, why shouldn t europeans be afraid with comments like that? they should be and they are. i ve been very involved in the legislative arm of nato for the last decade plus, and i can tell you i have never seen the europeans as anxious about american politics as they are right now. everything is at stake and as you indicated, nato, ironically, house work. it s kept the peace for most of 80 years. it is the one thing putin respects. he will not cross the nato border because of article five it says an attack on one his attack on all of us and we mean it. he has respected that. he has respected nothing else in this war but that so to call into question the viability on the utility and the efficacy of nato when it is working and we have a war going on is really reckless, and i don t think any european is going to turn to tom cotton for advice as we go forward. we should point out that article five is been invoked only once in nato s history, and that was to protect the united states after the terrorist attacks of 9/11. meanwhile, far right parties have made significant gains in elections today so much so that french president macron announced today that he would dissolve the nation s parliament and call for snap elections and this is significant because his current term does not end until 2027. are the far right forces gaining record support in europe as much a threat as a trump 2.0 in washington? i think there is a lot of variety among what is generically called the right in europe. the right in italy is very different than the right in germany and austria and on and on. obviously it is alarming to see this kind of far right parties make gains in european elections. european elections sometimes are a second vote for europeans, so they might not vote for the people who govern their own country but it is kind of a free vote, a way of expressing dissatisfaction with the status quo. obviously it reflects deep concern about the immigration issue in europe and we have to take note of that and respect that as a potent issue going forward. potent issue in europe, but does that also mean americans should look at what is happening in europe, american officials look at what is happening in europe and taking? yes. we can t afford to ignore what s happening in europe. that does not necessarily mean exactly that will happen here but it does not mean nothing. it is resonating with voters and we ve got to take cognizance of that. jerry connolly, member of the house foreign affairs committee and senior member of the house oversight committee, thanks for coming to the sunday show. joining me now, barbara walter, professor of relations at the university of california, san diego, she is the author of how civil wars started how to stop them. thank you very much for coming back to the sunday show. so, is it me or does it feel to you that trumps rhetoric of revenge and vengeance has kicked into a whole new gear, and how significant is it that his high-ranking followers are openly calling for the prosecution of trumps so-called enemies? well, the evidence is very clear. if you go back and listen to tapes and watch videos of trump in 2016, he is a very different person today and what he is saying is different than in 2016. he is much more aggressive. he is using much more negative, hate-filled, threatening language. it is like he is a bully on steroids today whereas he was not in 2016, and one of the things we also know from lots of research is that rhetoric matters, especially violent rhetoric, that if you have leaders who begin to normalize the idea that violence is legitimate, that their supporters believe it and some of them actually follow through with it, so it s not agnostic. it s not a game. this is not something that has no repercussions. if you have somebody like trump , who so many people idolize and his so many people believe is their hero and who is going to save them and he s telling them that the only way to save america is through violence, the only way that they won t be in danger is if they take back their country, they are going to believe him. the washington post has a front-page story about the former trump director who wrote in a 2022 essay quote, we are living in a post-constitutional time. according to the time, that quote has helped craft proposals for donald trump to deploy the military to quash civil unrest, sees more control over the justice department and assert the power to withhold congressional appropriations and that is just on trump s first day back in office. barbara, why should americans be very concerned about this? yes, i think so. part of what we wanted to emphasize in that ad is under president biden, you have the freedom to live under democracy. you have the freedom to make your own economic decisions. before trump put three pro-life supreme court justices on the court we women have the freedom to make our own reproductive health decisions. that freedom was taken away solely because of donald trump s a part of what that is doing is connecting the dots. we currently have the freedom to live under a democracy but if donald trump steps back into the white house, democracy will be at risk and when you saw president biden, who had an incredible week overseas honoring our following fallen and the 80th anniversary of d-day, how american allies in america fought to protect democracy across the world is a smart risk now than it ever was. now weaving all of these things together, talking about the freedoms we have in the president biden and the freedoms we won t have if trump wins the election, that is core to this campaign, and you will continue to hear that message throughout the next five months. while the president was in france yesterday, thousands of palestinian protesters rallied outside the white house urging the president to halt military aid to israel. how are these protests waiting on the campaign? first of all president biden, unlike former president trump, supports freedom of speech and expression. these protesters are exercising their right. that being said, we understand it the challenge. president biden is certainly fighting for every vote. he s not taking anything for granted but this is the freedom people have. they have the right to protest. they have the right to speak their mind. is not going to take anything for granted and it s important to keep in mind during these challenging times on the foreign policy front, on the global front, can you imagine having donald trump back in the white house trying to manage all this? president biden is a seasoned foreign-policy pro-who served as the chair on the senate foreign relations committee for a long time. he has these relationships with world leaders that go deep so we are going to be reinforcing the fact that is an important attribute the president has. at the same time we are working hard for every single vote. one thing that is going to make getting every vote a little problematic is the president s new executive action on the border which temporarily halts asylum requests once the average number of daily encounters tops 2500 at points of entry and it is drawing criticism from all quarters on both sides of the aisle. are you afraid of alienating progressive voters who argue that this policy is too harsh? no, we are not because here is the bottom line. republicans in congress did not act because their supreme leader donald trump said you can t. we will not pass the most historic bipartisan bill that has come forward in congress for 10 years because they did not want joe biden to have a win. they did not want him to have a political wins a president biden has to use every lover he can in the white house to do something about the border. americans know, democrats and republicans understand that there is a crisis of the border and asked to get solved but if congress is not going to act, if republicans in congress are going to block products progress on this than president biden is going to use every level at his disposal to try to make some change so this was an important executive action last week. it is something that has to take place and it is unfortunate that congress won t act. hopefully they will. there is still time to come to the table. that s where we are. okay, great economic news for the country, particularly the president. unemployment remains below 4%, but what guidance importers biden supporters are complaining about is that they are not hearing some of these things. reporter: you re not the first person who told me that the president is not necessarily communicating his accomplishments. why do you think he s not doing that? he needs to do better at basically putting it in people s faces. i accomplished this. i did this and the benefits you have now or because of me and my administration. that needs to be clear because i don t think many people do know what he has actually gotten done. so the question is this. is it that you re not communicating, or you are not breaking through when you do communicate, and if it is the latter, how are you going to breakthrough? she just did a really great job. i don t have to tell you this. it is really hard to breakthrough in the cycle. that s why we are using surrogates and taking our message to the voters. we have an aggressive digital strategy working with surrogates to get that message out but at the same time, everything president biden has accomplished, record gdp growth, record unemployment, the 15 million jobs he s created under his presidency, we understand americans are still hurting. prices are still too high which is why he is really making the case that in a second term is going to continue to work hard to lower prices and drug cost unlike donald trump, who has no economic plan. the first presidential debate is in three weeks, june 27th. i m not convinced trump is going to show up. are you already planning for that possibility? for sure. you see many of these potential running mates for donald trump going on tv, rushing to defend him and his various cases and advancing some of the same arguments. i agree that she is probably a top contender. on capitol hill the conversation usually centers around people like senator tim scott or jd vance. some conversations involve senator marco rubio, as well. there is the question of him having florida residency and former president trump having florida residency in this arcane role for the top of the ticket in the vice presidential nominee cannot be from the same state technically so how do you address that issue constitutionally but he is in the conversation. elise stefanik is out there doing this because she wants to be trump s vice presidential nominee. she is someone who came up in the republican party is someone viewed as a moderate, someone who will change the face of the party. she started this organization, winning for women, a republican women s group supporting candidates across the country that were more moderate, more centrist talking about issues that are more appealing to suburban women voters, for example, that republicans have lost out on in the last few elections and you see the transformation in real-time here. yes, huge transformation. you invoke the name of another person auditioning for terms vpn that is senator tim scott. listen to what he claims would happen if donald trump wins re- election. protecting law and justice is job one for president trump. he will not target his political opponents. he were fire merrick garland and restore confidence in the department of justice. for real, he will not target his political opponents? this week all he said was oh you know, i might have to get revenge. come on. every time he speaks i don t recognize who he is but to end this point, i don t know who the vp pick is going to be but it will be somebody who is going to have to lie about the election and say that donald trump is a victim right now who will weaponize the justice department. that s the job requirement. tim scott is just like all these republican vp wannabes, and they are going down to the very bottom to defend donald trump to say that he is saying things that he doesn t say. donald trump himself has said how he s going to weaponize the department of justice. we are not making that up. those are his own words so i think these republicans are trying to clean up donald trump s act but it is really not working. i want to squeeze in one more potential vp nominee. this is congressman byron donalds at the town hall event. this is a change my mind, not element seven, element six. watch this. during jim crow, more black people were not just conservative but more black people voted conservatively. the congressman went on with reverend sharpton yesterday and they got into, you know, shouting match with byron donalds saying i didn t say that i m not going to sit here and have you lie. we just saw that. why can you byron donalds post a video of himself saying that during jim crow over 4000 fathers, brothers, mothers, sisters were lynched. during jim crow, people s rights were taken away from them. during jim crow, black families were terrorized across the south. byron donalds, i don t know what vision what version of america he is living but it is not a version many of our parents and grandparents would recognize. i want to give a shout out to my colleagues who did a masterful job interviewing him and pointing out all those things. my sound off panel is going to stay with us. don t go anywhere. we are going to discuss rudy giuliani s crazy comment about fani willis. with bounce pet, you can cuddle and brush that hair off. bounce, it s the sheet. [music playing] back with me, former congressman joe walsh, former congressman donna edwards and andrew punch bowl. i teased this at the top of the show. listen to this from rudy giuliani. then i ve got two prosecutors. fanny the how now, fani is not fawn ee. really what giuliani did there is just so repugnant. it is. it is the constant dehumanizing of black women i think black women see that. i think all women see that for what it is. it s really disgusting. i would say it s beneath rudy giuliani but apparently nothing is beneath him. i come from the right. i come from right-wing media. i engaged in staff i would love to take back. it is the cruelty. just call it for what it is. the cruelty cells right now, sadly, with the republican party base. that is just ugly, and will quickly on this, what comes to my mind, why don t we see elected officials in the capital running out and condemning that language or language of retribution or anything, or is it they don t say anything because the cruelty is the point. this is what trump wants and this is what we are getting. members of congress, particularly republicans in the senate, i think, are more afraid of the base than they ever have been before. they are afraid to criticize remarks like this. they are afraid to do anything that would upset the people who got them into office even though they themselves don t personally agree with that type of rhetoric, with that sort of using those words, so it is that fear to condemn someone who is so, you know, he loves by the base of the party and the people who sent them to congress, and that is sort of the push and pull we are seeing right now in the republican party more one direction than the other but you have people like mitt romney not running for re-election. he calls the stuff out readily but he is an outcast in the republican party, almost like he was never the 2012 republican nominee for president. he is an outcast. he s leaving the senate. there are few, if any, left of his breed of republican after the election. right well, i mean lindsay graham used to be that breed but he is totally transformed. tomorrow is a big day for former president trump. he has his meeting with a probation officer. real quickly, let s play the former corrections commissioner marty horn, of new york city, how he described it. we use the term. we call it, is this individual amenable to supervision. that means is he or she receptive to accepting the restrictions that are placed upon them, in the event they are placed on probation. will they comply with the rules, or are they people who are likely to violate the rules? all right. you already know what i m going to ask. none of this applies to trump. absolutely no remorse. he is not following the rules. my great fear is, though, he s going to be sentenced to prison and become even a bigger martyr than he is now. i spent a lot of time in criminal court reading pre- sentence reports. it s hard to imagine that trump is going to do anything that really mitigates in front of the judge for sentencing and i think a probation officer is going to have to conclude that this is a man who will not abide by the rules of probation that are set for him. well i mean, he doesn t have to go to jail. can t they put him under house arrest? mean, this will be put, i guess in the most diplomatic terms, but the real possibility and president my mind president biden will believe he s going to win the when the upcoming us election. but in president macrons mind the concern that the next us president that he may be greeting in france could be donald trump, if he, if he wins the election. and that s a concern. and i think we heard those concerns overlaid and all the conversation and speeches that president biden has given while he s been in france about the importance of united states not being isolated, the importance of the duty of unity of the nation let s to support ukraine in its fight against president putin s russia which president zelenskyy himself compared to germany under the nazis and adolf hitler. so this is the sort of backdrop to the conversations, but the real meat of the conversations for what they both late to du really those lie in the sphere of peace in the middle east and, and of course how best to support parliament isn t the most important eu institution when it comes to foreign policy making you see that the results will reflect what the national debates are going to be about these national debate, aggression in ukraine and the ongoing war in ukraine but beyond the questions of whether or not europe can be united in its support for you ukraine. there are questions of european enlargement of the green agenda and also at the heart of what the european union is about whether it s going to be a model for democracy and supporting human rights. you see with the rise of these far-right parties that don t like institutions that are aren t particularly supportive of democracy or human rights it s very anti-immigration. they want to almost dismantle the european union from within. so these are really been questions that are coming with this particular election. disaster there s obviously a lot of talk about what will happen if, if donald trump becomes president again and what that would mean for europe. but let s turn that around if right-wing parties perform well, what could that mean for relations with us? it s a really good question, and i think in terms of if it s still joe biden in 2024 the biden administration has maintained that they are committed to democracy, to human rights into working to ensure that the partnership, the transatlantic partnership is ironclad and that they were working in lockstep in fighting against russian aggression and they ll have to work with whatever partners are there. and you see that biden is in france right now. and though he and macron don t agree on everything, that they are showing a united efforts here that they do mostly agree on on the issue of russian aggression. and in trying to strengthen the european union but with the trump presidency, i think you re going to see quite a bit of disarray and chaos if you look at the far-right, this family group is probably one of the groups that is the least united and trump promotes disarray. whether it d be just this isolationists idea that doesn t really work for institutions, particularly intergovernmental institutions. and also the transatlantic partnership. there needs to be i guess something fighting against that rugged individualism that these far-right parties want to promote. so it would be very hard to predict what s going to happen. but what you ve seen is just at least the voting of some of the var of the far-right in the european parliament. they vote to basically support russia either refusing to vote against putin or russia. but they show their true colors many times by their voting record. and this of course, would be a big win for putin as asha, whilst biden has been in paris this this week he certainly has reiterated, america s commitment to european security given these, there a sense that that s ringing a little hello given that he could be out of the white house come november definitely. there s a sense that europe cannot rely on the u.s. that is not a trustworthy partner because even though there were decades and decades of the us and europe being incredibly united against what they perceive to be similar threats and that they had similar goals. the trump presidency really through everything into total disorder because he has threatened to abandon nato course left the paris agreement at a moment s notice, left the iran nuclear agreement has threatened to leave the world health organization so u.s. commitment to these types of institutions appears to be wavering. and of course, france, president emmanuel macron has sounded the alarm on this that europe has to be more independent, both militarily, financially in every single way, and can t rely on the us and he s been talking about modernizing europe s nuclear forces because the big the big threat is without a united, us and europe making it very clear to putin, what they re capable of russia under putin was very risky accent acceptant, could take huge risks. whether that means using nuclear weapons, whether it means attacking other nato countries. there s a lot of unknowns there so. there have been many voices within europe besides just macron, say about the us economy? confusion i guess, right? you re looking for these reports to come out and say this is the direction of the economy is going but the number is kinda show both pictures where unemployment kinda continuous rise, wage growth rises, but jobs are actually increased as well. so what i mean by that, what it means we re looking at the federal reserve so they can do choose, decide to decrease interest rates. but this jobs report does not help the case. it also shows a painted picture that is divided on both sides. and so i don t the word is confusion, i guess for those looking from the outside, looking in, and it means that the fed, the federal reserve will continue to hold pat are not decrease in interest rate because the numbers are not still fighting an inflation as it wants to these 272,000 jobs added. i mean, the numbers are misleading as you say, because of the way that the surveys are conducted, payroll obviously focuses on large companies, but the broader household surveys suggest that unemployment is ticking up. so why are they not aligned i think also there s a couple of things capturing think about these surveys, how they re capturing it, where they re capturing at what time is it being captured? i also think that gig worker is not being captured in this as well, people choosing not to come come back into the workforce as another thing. so where do you categorize those types of folks in those and also companies choosing, think about small businesses. if wages starting to go up, they re going to have less employees on w2, which means that they re going to probably go contractor roles. and so that gets reported differently as well. and then you think about some of these industries. where do you think of that job growth out of that report? it was health care government, leisure and hospitality. these are consistent with the trends that are growing where the other sectors are not and then there is this, i guess confusion on the stock market you ve got the magnificent seven. are these big companies outperforming, making record profits they re hiring obviously remains strong with small to medium enterprises suffering yeah, no, i think it was clear in this report in the last couple of reports that small businesses are struggling. i think when you mentioned that magnificent seven, you have to call out nvidia all, of, this, the record growth bag had and that s holding the market, i would say. and the word ai for a couple of or amd and others are pulling the market up so that trend goes hot. it brings a market go up. now, mind you when the market goes down, typically, who are those who would the tech talks are taking the town with them? is these very, very sudden that you mentioned. so i think that s you see the market, but i think small businesses are really feeling it because of wages are becoming more expensive. supply chain costs to goods are expensive and i think that s part of why i think though the biden white house is trying to before the before the white house, before the november election to do more at the consumer level, or they can keep the soon we re spending at a high. and so it d be interesting to see what happens next employments is strong. i mean, that suggests that the economy is in good shape, but i guess not everybody is feeling that. and then you mentioned prison of biden. i mean, this is a big problem. him stealing. he s economic performance, the strength of the economy because inflation is hurting poor people the most yeah you ve got the economic fundamentals. you see the numbers, you look at the backend and when you see where prices of increased in what parts of the country what types of different graphics it turns to be when you see these numbers, then you see your bank account. i think the word had been using as by you don t feel that you re getting the economic benefit out of what the market is doing. and i think for president biden is uphill battle for him to face these type of vibes or feelings that people are feeling because they re not spending as much even though consumer spending overall has been there, but that doesn t mean with all the different groups so they re there and even certain companies and they are sitting on the sideline and holding cash instead of investing it. furthermore, because they don t, they re still not sure where the market is and things are expensive because of industries being high. so people are not taking loans out there are waiting and waiting to see when that occurs. and so it does cause is built up where you see shelter prices, rent increase in wages don t always keep up with that. and so it is interesting the dilemma that the president, president biden the white house, needs to be talking about the rhetoric has been interesting and hasn t been really working when it comes with some things, exit polls and surveys then i guess the biggest question in the markets is when will the fed cut rates? and i guess that s not gonna to happen while employment remained strong i with you. now, the market the market wants as of today, the market thought over 60% of the trend or the guesses were that they marked the future market was saying that they were going to see a rate cut in september. we ll find out next week when the fed meets, when, what the rhetoric looks like. but i can tell you this i d be hard pressed to think that they re gonna make a cut in september right before election. and if they did is 25 basis point no, that doesn t mean very much. and that would mean that they would start cutting it down. and as of today, i don t see them doing that based on the data that we have now, things can change until september, but it seems like maybe we ll get a rate cut by the end of the year and then going into next year, have a better plan, but it to me it doesn t look good for september even though the market, future markets are saying it s still over 50% chance that occur. but i think it s still
