helps me. it's a reminder why there's so many millions of voters who will never vote for them going forward so some more cautious than others. chris christie, nothing cautious about his rhetoric there, but i'm curious oz if the strategy changes. i have what voters tell me they're not interested in the slug-fest, but instead, these candidates proposing their vision for america. >> thank you. let's dig deeper with our political commentators. alice stewart and karen finny are with me here in "the situation room." >> what we're seeing with the poll numb respect, his base is

is rebooting yet again. now promising donors a leaner, meaner campaign. tonight all of this is happening as top republican party officials are still trying to convince the front-runner, donald trump, to show up. >> ronald reagan didn't do it and a lot of other people didn't do it. when you have a big lead, you don't do it. >> for more on this, i want to bring in cnn political commentator karen finny and matt lewi senior columnist at daily beast and author of new book, "filly rich politicians." we're going to get to that book in a moment, matthew, because obviously it's a topic i think everyone can agree on. but we're learning these new details about another reset that the desantis campaign is trying. it involves smaller events, getting him in front of voters in these early states like iowa and south carolina and kind of what they say is embracing this underdog mentality. the question, of course, is does it work?

problem in their minds is try to pass the law and not bypass the constitutional boundaries put in the presidency and given to the congress. >> i'll let karen respond. >> again, they did try to pass laws and it was republicans in congress with a little help from a couple of democrats, but we didn't have the republicans vote to actually pass measures to help bring student relief. and so, again, all these decisions taken together, this is huge point of contrast between who democrats are fighting for, who this president is fighting for. are we expanding the circle of opportunity or making it further out of reach with each of these decisions? >> karen finny, scott jennings, guys, thanks very much. coming up, we'll go live to ukraine where a top intelligence official now claims russia is plotting to assassinate the mercenary chief behind the weekend rebellion. plus a damning state department report details the failures behind the chaotic u.s. withdrawal from afghanistan. g bs both large and small,

the leader may feel differently than say your average rank and file member out there who may represent a different kind of constituency. so i think it really might be very dependent on who they are and what their responsibilities are. i think overall what you're hearing out of republicans is happiness with the court. you know, really these 6-3 decisions are exactly what conservatives had envisioned when donald trump got his appointments, and they're thrilled basically overall with the direction of it today and throughout this last couple of weeks, so i'm not surprised they're shying away from a couple of them, but on the whole i think you're getting republicans frankly euphoring about what's happened here. >> karen finny, let's get your thoughts. take a listen to president biden's defense when asked if he gave borrowers of these student loans false hope now that the supreme court has blocked his forgiveness program. listen to this. >> i didn't give any false hope. the question was whether or not

afford to pay its debts, putting the nation at risk of a catastrophic default for the first time in the history of the united states. hoping to avoid that cnn has learned that house democrats have taken a key behind the scenes procedural step that could be used in case of fire break glass to bypass house republican leadership to force a vote to raise the debt ceiling, a clean bill. although they would need some republicans to go along with it. gyning us now republican strategist kevin madden along with cnn political commentator karen finny. just to bring people up to speed on that, there's a thing called the discharge petition. very nerdy thing, but what you can do is if 218 members of the house go and sign this petition they can force any legislation on it the floor for a cleanup and down vote. so haulm democrats are there, 210? you would need a handful of republicans to go along. >> correct. and the assumption here is that putting it on those 18

on january 6th. if he does have presidential ambition it's going to get challenging for him -- >> how do you get out of it? >> civility is a tough message for mike pence to sell. not because mike pence is a civil guy. he is. the contrast between mike pence in that town hall and donald trump is fast. but he literally stood behind donald trump for four years -- >> whether it was satisfying or not he talked about the idea, you know, he criticized in private, where he had those personal moments -- >> yes, sure. go ahead, karen. >> i was going to say, sure, but now you're not the vice president to donald trump anymore, and now you can say, look, then i was doing my duty. i'll make the message up. let's do it on the spot. then i was doing my duty, i had agreed to be his vice president, but now let me tell you who i really am and what i really care

facing our democracy still. >> that progress makes democracy a whole lot more complicated. for one thing it's easier for people to agree on stuff when the majority of the people look the same and worship the same way and share the same traditions. it's harder as society's become more diverse and everybody is at the table. and we're going to have to figure out how to live together, or we will destroy each other. >> i want to bring in cnn politics reporter and editor at large crist eliza, and cnn political commentators karen finny. i'm glad you're here and thinking about this. without the tie. i love it. >> look, my mom may be watching. she may be asleep. every time i go on tv without the tie she's like did you

their fear of crime, republicans talking about the idea of being unsafe. and for many although it's lower on that cnn chart we pulled out in the poll, this is still part of the biggest talking point in the country, right, crime. >> absolutely. karen, i know you worked on the north carolina senate race. i'm from north carolina. if you watch a college football game north carolina is playing nc state or something like that. that's in a couple weeks. you're going to see a lot of ads on crime. and if he's not talking about crime he's talking about the economy. it's why i watched the biden speech today some sort of mystified sense about why he was doing this and doing it today. i thought it was a good speech politically. i thought it was a good speech how it was delivered. i agree with a lot of what biden says on these election deniers that are taking over county boards and obviously states. but politics is about people, and people are concerned about what's happening to them every day of their lives, and that's when they go to the grocery store, when they go to the gas

the details that has come out is that there are security cameras around the pelosi home, can they have a live feed to the capitol police back in d.c., but no one was monitoring that feed because the speaker wasn't at her home in san francisco, so it took them ten minutes to realize that a crime was under way. so obviously they need a security review to figure out what to do differently. >> it's funny you think about that and it's not entirely clear whether the officers would have responded maybe even sooner. who knows, the idea think of the cost incurred and what is required and the sheer scope of the problem. i mean, we see what happens when capitol police officers are outnumbered, and you think about the notion of just the scope of toxicity happening right now. i mean, how many officers is it going to take and surveillance to bring this temperature down? let's talk about it with my panel here. i've got alex burns, karen finny, and doug hie. when you think about the capitol police were monitoring but

2024. if i might respond to karen, though, on the merits of the argument for the general election, you can always tell people who don't have confidence in their policies when they completely lie about what they're calling them, the inflation reduction act. that's the label they put on this bill that they now placed all their hopes and dreams for the general election. not a single, nonpartisan credible analysis of this bill says it will reduce inflation. it is going to raise taxes and hire a bunch of irs agents and going to spend a bunch of money we don't have. but they called it the inflation reduction act. anybody who has been to the store lately knows that's a bunch of garbage. so i'm just saying, karen, if you're going to run on a bill, call it what it is, the democrat wish list act. nothing to do with inflation. >> it was build back better up until, what, a couple weeks ago? >> up until they changed the title of it so joe manchin could lie to the people of west virginia. that's what it was. >> karen, go ahead. >> we're talking about serious deficit reduction. we're talking about lowering
