Major interest expected as former West Ham target back on market
Date published: Sunday 18th April 2021 10:07 - Neil Foster
Reports claim striker Alassane Plea will leave Borussia Monchengladbach this summer, putting many European clubs on high alert.
The 28-year-old is approaching the end of his third season with the Bundesliga outfit, having joined from Nice in July 2018. Initially a winger, the man with one France cap was converted to a central striker by Claude Puel while at Allianz Riviera. He has never been prolific in front of goal but has bagged 35 goals from 102 appearances in all competitions for Gladbach.
The Lille-born ace has scored just four times in the German top flight but does have 10 goals overall in 2020-2021. But it seems as though this may well be his last campaign for Die Fohlen.

Delort scores as Montpellier extend unbeaten run against Lille

Montpellier started the game sluggishly and almost pay for it in the fourth minute when Burak Yilmaz found himself in a one-on-one situation with goalkeeper Jonas Omlin but he managed to miss the target.
Another fine opportunity fell in the way of Lille to open the scoring in the 12th minute but Yilmaz’s shot was blocked.
Montpellier gradually pushed for the opening goal and got it in the 36th minute when Delort headed home from close range after receiving a sublime pass from Gaetan Laborde.
Moments before the end of the first half, the Algeria international came close to double the Paillade’s lead when he powered a header towards goal but the effort failed to trouble Lille goalkeeper Mike Maignan.

Neymar involved in tunnel tussle with Djalo after red card for PSG vs Lille

The aftermath
As the pair headed for the tunnel at the Parc des Princes, Neymar and Djalo continued their verbal sparring.
The pair were followed into the tunnel by officials from both clubs, and the row became more intense.
Neymar shoved Djalo and attempted to race around those separating the two in a bid to get to the Lille defender - who appeared ready to confront the Brazilian - before being ushered into the home dressing room.
A big blow for PSG
PSG have not had things easy in Ligue 1 this term, with Lille and Lyon mounting excellent title challenges.

Recovering Neymar ruled out of PSG's Cup game against Lille
 16 Mar 2021 - 20:08
Reuters
PARIS - Paris St Germain will once again be without Neymar when they face Lille in the French Cup last-16 on Wednesday but manager Mauricio Pochettino hopes to have Angel Di Maria and Marquinhos available after their homes were robbed last weekend.
Brazilian forward Neymar has not yet fully recovered from an adductor muscle injury he picked up in the previous round against Caen on Feb. 10.
The French champions initially said he would be out for action for "up to four weeks" but Pochettino said on Tuesday he hopes to have the 29-year-old back for Sunday's Ligue 1 game away to Olympique Lyonnais.

Ligue 1 leaders Lille eased into the French Cup last 16 on Sunday with a 3-1 victory at fourth-tier Gazelec Ajaccio.
Christophe Galtier’s men eased to a straightforward win, with Portuguese centre-back Xeka and the in-form Jonathan David both finding the net.
Lille, who lead Paris Saint-Germain by two points in the Ligue 1 title race, are bidding for a first major trophy since winning the league and cup double in 2011.
They kept their hopes of repeating that feat alive on Sunday despite naming a much-changed side.
Gazelec played in Ligue 1 in the 2015-16 season but have been relegated three times since.

For the first time ever, two Hungarian films are competing for the Berlinale’s Golden Bear: “Forest – I See You Everywhere,” a standalone sequel to the 2003 Berlinale hit “Forest,” from veteran auteur Bence Fliegauf, and “Natural Light” from feature debutant Dénes Nagy. Csaba Káel, chairman of the National Film Institute of Hungary (NFI), says, “I believe it demonstrates the vitality and strength of the Hungarian industry flourishing despite the unprecedented circumstances caused by the pandemic worldwide.”
The two films represent opposite poles of current Hungarian filmmaking. Brimming with discourse, the independently funded “Forest” tells multiple complex, engaging stories of contemporary life in Hungary. And as he did in his Berlinale-winner “Just the Wind” (2012), Fliegauf creates deep empathy for his characters who deliver standout performances.

MATCHDAY: Napoli, Arsenal under pressure in Europa League

NAPOLI-GRANADA (0-2)
Spanish club Granada is on the verge of a major upset in its first European competition. Yangel Herrera and Kenedy scored Granada’s goals at home against a Napoli team whose season seems to be slipping away. One win from six games in all competitions this month has seen Napoli fall from challenging for the Champions League places in Serie A to clinging on in seventh.
ARSENAL-BENFICA (1-1)
The Europa League is Arsenal’s last opportunity for a trophy - and might represent the team’s only route to qualifying for European competitions next season. Mikel Arteta’s team has dropped to 11th in the Premier League and is nine points off Chelsea in fifth place, which is set to be the sole Europa League qualifying position in the league. Thomas Partey has returned to training with Arsenal after a hamstring injury but it remains to be seen if the midfielder is fit enough to feature in the second leg against Benfica. The game will take place in Athens due to coronavirus travel restrictions.

Moffi's assist not enough as Lille end Lorient's five-game unbeaten run in Ligue 1

Moffi was on parade for 74 minutes alongside DR Congo's Yoane Wissa before they were both substituted.
The Nigeria striker who joined Lorient from Belgian First Division A club Kortrijk last September, is enjoying a remarkable debut campaign in France.
Moffi has contributed eight goals and an assist so far in 19 Ligue 1 matches for Christophe Pelissier's side.
After suffering their first league loss since January 9, Lorient dropped to 18th in the Ligue 1 table with 23 points after 25 matches while Lille rose to the top of the log with 58 points.
The 21-year-old will turn his attention to Wednesday's trip to Nimes and he will be aiming to rediscover his goalscoring boots and help

'We have a lot to prove, we are super hungry' - Weah ready to lead resurgent Lille and USMNT

Timothy Weah is back in goalscoring form as his club side Lille lead the Ligue 1 race and he is optimistic about the future of the U.S. men's national team too

'We have a lot to prove, we are super hungry' - Weah ready to lead resurgent Lille and USMNT

Yet, as the U.S. men's national team begins a cycle-defining 2021, Weah is a player that has fallen out of focus. Long seen as one of the more promising attacking pieces of the USMNT's next generation of young stars, he has fallen further and further down the pecking order as other players commanded the limelight while he sat on the sidelines.
However, now, Weah's name is beginning to pop up more and more. The 20-year-old forward is finally healthy, finally scoring and, perhaps, finally ready to take his next step for both his club, French Ligue 1 leaders Lille, and his country.

'He's appreciated' - Lille's Galtier in awe of Camara display versus Dijon

In his post-match assessment, Galtier is impressed with the performance of the young forward against David Linares’ team, while pointing out the qualities that make him so special.
“That young people were able to participate in the preparation of the match, that Aguibou was able to participate and more than participate, is good,” Galtier told the
“I found him very solid in his game, disciplined tactically. He scored a decisive goal, it's good for him, it's an extra step for a young boy who often works with us and hasn't played since March.
“He arrived last season, I saw him play in the reserve team. I find him, at 19, having a certain personality in the game he doesn't lose a lot of balls, he's solid on his supports, and also versatile because he can play right or left.

Mbappe scores as PSG beats Marseille 2-0, Lille stays top

Mbappe scores as PSG beats Marseille 2-0, Lille stays top
By Jerome PugmireFebruary 7, 2021 GMT
PARIS (AP) — Kylian Mbappe scored early on as Paris Saint-Germain eased to a 2-0 win at bitter rival Marseille in the French league on Sunday.
The contest was far removed from September’s fiery meeting in Paris, when Marseille won 1-0 and five players were sent off.
Mbappe struck in the eighth minute with a confident finish after sprinting clear from near the halfway line, and strike partner Mauro Icardi flicked a looping header over goalkeeper Steve Mandanda in the 23rd.
Although Marseille improved after the break, it was missing imposing striker Arkadiusz Milik because of a thigh injury and was ineffective without its new signing from Napoli.

'I dreamed of Arsenal and Barcelona' - Former Gunners target David admits he longed for Emirates move

“European clubs made me dream,” David, who turned 21 in January, told
L’Equipe. “I watched Barca a lot, Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal, with Thierry Henry and Patrick Vieira. I might not have been ready in my head. But that was the only option, my goal from the start. I knew I had to make sacrifices.
“That’s when I met Nick Mavromaras, my agent, who had the contacts.”
He had the option to move to Borussia Monchengladbach ahead of Lille during the summer, but it was the French side’s desire to sign him that made the difference.
“At the meeting with Luis Campos [Lille’s sporting director at the time], I liked his project,” David added. “It was a very young team, with a lot of ambition and there was the Champions League. I was going to play, continue my progress in a French-speaking environment, which was supposed to help my integration.

Ajax confirm they have accidentally left record signing Haller out of Europa League squad

It reads: "UEFA has informed Ajax that winter purchase Sebastien Haller will definitely not be available in the UEFA Europa League for the rest of the 2020/2021 season.
"Due to an administrative error at Ajax, the striker was not registered on the list of players for the Europa League, which had to be submitted no later than Tuesday, February 2.
"The player who came to Ajax from West Ham United on January 8 can be used in Eredivisie and cup matches.
"Despite attempts to make Haller eligible to play, the club received a final message from UEFA on Thursday evening that Haller will not be added after all. Oussama Idrissi, the other attacker who came to Ajax in the last transfer window, can be used in the Europa League."

France: Migrants Dodge Deportation by Going to Belgium and Returning

24 Jan 2021
Roma gypsy migrants ordered to leave French territory have been using an EU loophole to avoid deportation, spending just hours across the border in Belgium and then returning.
The association Solidarité Roms Lille Europe has, for the last ten years, brought Roma originally from Romania and Bulgaria across the French border to Belgium after being handed deportation notices by the French government, it is claimed.
After crossing the border, the Roma fulfil their obligation to leave French territory and are given back their passports by the Belgian authorities. They then often simply return to France within a few hours, France Info reports — a process made easy by the European Union’s no-borders Schengen Agreement.
