the 39 passengers and crew aboard an iranian airliner were not so lucky. all were killed when their plane struck power lines shortly after takeoff. the pilot of the iranian-built plane was praise ford managing not to hit any residential buildings as he crashed. it is the latest in a series of crashes for iran's airlines. to iraq where the government plunged into political crisis. the prime minister nuri al maliki resisting calls for resignation and accusing the president of violating the constitution. the infighting there could hinder efforts to stop advance of the sunni military group isis, the u.s. standing by the iraqi president. for the third straight day, u.s. warplanes have struck isis targets in northern iraq providing much needed protection and relief to thousands of refugees caught in the crossfire.

some u.s. lawmakers are blunter saying point blank he is got to go. christiane amanpour joins me now and covering iraq for a lot of years for time magazine. christiane, there seems to be no support for nuri al-maliki and clearly the white house believes there needs to be change. >> the president made that pretty clear going to say it's not up to the united states to choose who is the government of iraq but nonetheless, they have lost faith in nuri-al maliki, even hillary clinton basically told me iraqis need to get rid of maliki. who would be alternatives? we are hearing names floated, a sunni name and a shiite being floated. if you remember, he was the name associated most with helping to pull the u.s. into that war. so see how far things have come,

a big political shake-up happening in iraq with the surprise upset in the parliamentary elections held earlier this month. the sunni alliance narrowly edged out nuri you al maliki's candidates. although maliki said he's open to negotiating with other parties, he says he is not accepting the results and is accusing the other side of fraud. the united states is watching this transition of power everywhere closely. the president's second choice of transportation security chief has withdrawn from consideration because of questions over his background as a defense contractor. retired army major general robert harding too many himself out of the running. he says the distractions caused by his background won't be good for the administration or the tsa. the administration called the tsa chief the most important
