Numerous brands known for showcasing new commercials during the Super Bowl are bowing out over fears they “won’t hit the right tune.”
Bill Oberlander, co-founder and executive creator of ad agency Oberland, said that typically for the Super Bowl “you go big or go home” and this year brands are “going home rather than spending tens of millions of dollars and not getting it right.” They are saying “let’s wait until this s—storm clears.”
The brands that have already opted out are: Budweiser, Coca-Cola, Hyundai, Olay, Avocados From Mexico, Little Caesars and Ford.

A woman from California, who was charged with attempted murder after intentionally running over Trump supporters with her vehicle last year, is facing new charges in connection with another anti-Trump incident.
Tatiana Rita Turner, 40, has been hit with two felony counts of assault with a deadly weapon after a “months-long review of video evidence” that shows her using a four-foot-long rod to “repeatedly” beat two men who were lying on the ground after being attacked by other protestors.
Turner, who has previous felony convictions for drug sales and domestic violence, faces seven years to life plus 26 years, if convicted on all charges.

Neatly three dozen missing kids were rescued by authorities in Southern California during a human trafficking investigation.
Of the 33 children rescued, eight were being sexually exploited when authorities swooped in to save them, according to the FBI. One arrest was made and multiple investigations were launched as part of the probe.
In 2020, the FBI conducted 664 human trafficking investigations across the country, leading to the arrest of 473 traffickers.

New York State lost 1 million jobs during the COVID crisis last year due to lockdowns and lack of tourism and business activity.
According to the state Labor Department NYC alone lost nearly 600k jobs from Dec. 2019 to Dec. 2020 — that’s about 1 in 8 jobs or about 12%.

US Customs and Border Protection officials seized two separate shipments from Hong Kong that contained more than 800 counterfeit Cartier jewelry products. An estimated value of $8.72 million.
The first shipment was inspected in Cincinnati, Ohio and contained over 400 designer bracelets headed to a residence in West Palm Beach, Florida.
On the same night, a second shipment containing 401 Cartier rings and bracelets was stopped in Louisville, Kentucky, also headed to the same residence in West Palm Beach.

Roku has officially picked up the majority of Quibi’s multi-million dollar library of original short-form programming.
On Friday, Roku announced that they acquired the exclusive global rights to 75 shows from the failed startup, giving new life to its star-studded library.
The shows will be available this year on the Roku Channel, which is free for Roku customers.
The terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Three people were killed and five were injured during a shooting spree in Chicago over the weekend.
The rampage started Saturday afternoon when a woman was fatally shot and another seriously hurt in the city’s Kenwood neighborhood. A University of Chicago student was then shot and killed in a parking lot nearby.

More people are leaving the New York-New Jersey metropolitan area due to the COVID crisis, than any other region in the country.
United Van Line’s annual moving survey for 2020 found that NJ led all states with 70% of people exiting, while only 30% moved in.
NY and Illinois were tied for second worst with departures accounting for 67% of all moves between March and October.
Connecticut took the third spot with 63% of residents leaving the state.
The states with the highest “move-in” rate include: Idaho (70%), South Carolina (64%), Oregon (63%), South Dakota (62%) and Arizona (62%).

The Wisconsin pharmacist who was arrested for destroying more than 500 doses of the COVID vaccine was a “conspiracy theorist” who believed the “shots would mutate human DNA,” according to prosecutors.
Steven Brandenburg, 46, allegedly took the vials out of refrigeration overnight on Christmas Eve and then again on Christmas night. He initially said it was on accident, but then later admitted to doing it intentionally. The spoiled doses were worth as much as $11,000.
Brandenburg was arrested last week and held on $10,000 bond.
Prosecutors need to determine the extent of the damage before filing criminal charges in the case.
