Television: Sheinelle Jones returns home to report for 'Today'

A familiar face will broadcast on the streets of Philadelphia this week.
Sheinelle Jones, who graduated to NBC News and her current 9-10 a.m. host stint on that network’s “Today” from Channel 29’s local “Good Day Philadelphia," will report live from her hometown and former bailiwick through Friday as part of an ongoing series, “Reopening America” which involves a skein of big-city visits to show how the 2020 COVID shutdowns have affected those metropoles economically and psychologically and how they are beginning to recover.
Because of her deep roots here – Her father, C. Darnell Jones II, is a sitting judge on Philadelphia’s Court of Common Pleas – Jones chose Philly as the first stop for her reports.

What we loved at Sundance 2021 . . . from our couch

This year the 2021 Sundance Film Festival was virtual, and its offerings trimmed down from previous years. It included 73 feature films, 50 short films, four Indie Series, 23 talks and events, and 14 New Frontier multimedia projects. We watched 38 of the 73 films, including most of the award winners. Here are some sneak peaks of our favorites to look for in the year to come.

Some things are excruciatingly difficult to articulate in words, and can only be expressed in an abstract manner such as dance. Things such as the lonely success of Alvin Ailey, a gay man born in the depression in 1931 who, against all odds, was able to realize his dream. Choreographer, former Ailey company member, and friend George Faison reflects on their groundbreaking work that was rooted in Black liberation: "We didn't have to go out to the street and protest, our protest was on the stage." Director Jamilla Wignot's film gives voice to the silent protest in Ailey's heart that did not have an audience.

'The Blazing World' Review: Carlson Young's Exhaustively Art-Directed but Enervating Adult Fantasy

'The Blazing World' Review: Carlson Young's Exhaustively Art-Directed but Enervating Adult Fantasy
Writer-director-star Carlson Young pours much effort and feeling into this loose riff on a 17th-century sci-fi text, but who is it for?

For a filmmaker to take a possessive credit in their debut is already a confident move; for the opening credits of the first feature by writer-director-star Carlson Young to present it as “Carlson Young’s ‘The Blazing World’” is a brazen one. That title, of course, belongs first to a somewhat more established female author: Margaret Cavendish, whose 1666 book “The Description of a New World, Called the Blazing-World” was a foundational work of science fiction. Cavendish’s adventurous exploration of alternate dimensions has given loose inspiration to Young’s glittery but grief-fueled fantasy, which those credits again describe as “inspired by Margaret Cavendish and other dreams.”
