United Airlines has agreed to purchase 15 of Boom Supersonic’s Overture aircraft, subject to them meeting safety and sustainability standards. The agreement also includes an option for 35 additional aircraft.
Unlike other competitors in the supersonic space, Boom’s model targets commercial passenger flights to begin with. It aims to have the aircraft flying in 2029.
Aviation commentator, Sally Gethin, told BBC Radio 4’s PM programme:
“The public has always had a fascination for supersonic and it keeps reappearing on the agenda. However, all the hazards of the Concorde still have to be overcome.”

It all began in 2004, when Texan billionaire Robert Bass decided to re-commercialise supersonic aerial travel by launching Aerion Supersonic. By 2021, it had a backlog of $11.2bn – or 93 orders – for its AS2 supersonic jet. And soon after announcing the near-hypersonic AS3, a new concept, the company ground to a halt, shutting down unexpectedly last weekend.
At $120m each, the Mach 1.4 AS2 promised to connect any two points on Earth
“in three hours or less” by 2027. Industry veteran Dr Richard Tracy spearheaded the vision for supersonic business travel, alongside ex-Gulfstream and Rolls-Royce engineer, Michael Hinderberger and others.

“With great power comes great responsibility” is not just a quote popularised by a superhero franchise (originally penned by Voltaire). Just ask the aviation original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) charting their routes across the world of advanced air mobility (AAM). Where flying over urban populations is concerned, there is a responsibility for the safety of their passengers and those their aircraft fly over. Noise is also a big factor.
In October 2020, Embraer’s market accelerator Embraer X (X for exponential) launched its first project – Eve Urban Air Mobility Solutions. Eve CEO André Stein told Revolution.Aero that the company is leveraging the
