Mention, and between him. yeah, two powerful speeches back-to-back. there s, there s no question about that. he also had a meeting with ukrainian president volodymyr zelenskyy in that meeting, bye she apologized for the bitter infighting on capitol hill that delayed that major aid package, that delay something you asked joint chiefs chairman cq brown about enormity. here s what he said. do you think they can reverse the advances russia has made? i mean, it was a significant delay and certainly the ukrainians blame that delay for losing men and territory what you, even if you look at what s happened over the course of the past year, i mean, there has not been a dramatic shift in in lines there. but again, we ve got to continue to support ukraine and be able to push back against this aggression because it does have an impact, not just for ukraine, not just for europe, but really for the entire world. that s been the message. this isn t just about one country, this isn t just about one fight, it s so much bigger than that as the backdrop i think captures

Such a case right now. there is no necessity for that. but these pictures send a different message. russia has been holding tactical nuclear drills near ukraine s border a not so subtle hint to kyiv and to the west. and president putin is warning he may send conventional long range missiles to other countries for strikes on western targets. his response to nato allies allowing ukraine to hit russian territory with western missiles. but would he actually do this? some people in the west say we ve heard it before from russia, we ve heard sabre rattling for the last two years and that it s a bluff. yeah, of course, it s always bluff until the time when it s not. you can keep thinking that russia is bluffing, and then, one day, there is no more great britain to love it. and all this at an economic

First of all, by allies, i think extremely important and one of the ones of course was the person that president biden was sitting. what volodymyr zelenskyy, i think that apology especially is very important to the ukrainians. will one of the things that ukraine s have been telling us and the many times that we d been on the ground with them as they were starving, they say for those us artillery shells as that aid was caught up in congress, is they say, look for the ukrainians. this was all measured in lives. they say potentially thousands of ukrainians were killed because they didn t have enough ammunition to fight back the russians. now of course, other allies he is also reassured by the words of president biden. you look, for instance, at the french who are now promising mirage fighter jets to the ukrainians. but also where i am right here, germany, olaf scholtz of the german chancellor saying that he also liked president biden is now going to let the ukrainians use german weapons to strike into russian territory also, on a limited base as well, very different the adversaries, of course, vladimir putin, also a big day for him. she had a big

98 foot cliffs, nearly 100 foot cliffs that those army rangers scaled on that day before taking over this lookout that had been used by the nazis. the americans taking it over, and as a function of that able to protect the d-day beach landings at omaha and utah beaches that frame where we are standing right now. and if i were to be able to flip the camera around, there s too many others to show you. i can show you the pockmarked landscape here where the american and allied war planes bombed this area to try to soften up the territory before their arrival on this day. i got to tell you, ana, i ve been to a lot of stunning and unique places, but this is one of the most powerful backdrops i ve ever experienced. it is powerful. it s beautiful, and it s also been so powerful to see those veterans who have been on site at many of the events in the last couple of days commemorating d-day and their service, sacrifice, and courage that that they showed that day now so long ago, 80 years ago.

This is something that s zelenskyy also talked about his meeting with the president for the ukrainians is air defense missiles. that s important for the ukrainians to try and keep their city safe. you were just mentioning the city of kharkiv, which of course has been pummeled over the past month and a half since the russians launched a big offensive in that area, coming from russian territory, which then again spark the us to allow oh, the ukrainians to use american supplied weapons to hit the russians on the russian side of the border so air defense, very important for them. one of the big things that we have to keep an eye on briana is that the russians have become a lot better at using their air force near the front leinz, a bombing ukrainian positions. and that s also one of the reasons why the ukrainian president keeps saying they need more air defense capabilities. that s also part of that military assistance. the package as well. briana. all right. fred pleitgen. thank you so much. still to come. hunter biden s attorneys have not yet decided if he ll testify in his federal gun trial. why? fence appears to be

We had been clear. putin has been crossing red lines all through the obama administration, red line after red line from georgia forchechnya and syria and crimea and we ve enabled this behavior but we have to be careful what we do next and have to rack and stack our foreign policy priorities clearly. europe has benefited from 80 years of american protection. spending sometimes half of a percent of gdp on the military industrial complex while they retire at age 52 and go golfing. america has been providing the military security for the last century and had a long time to reorient themselves and be prepared to defend their own territory and europe is having to reboot their defense industrial complex. they should be able to defend themselves and invest in their own security. but europe has to put this problem first. they have to make those decisions about whether they are going to invest in their security buffer.

The question, though, is, there is tension between president biden and president zelenskyy. the issue is, again, exactly what arms are going to be supplied and, even more, how can they be used? what zelenskyy wants is not simply more arms sooner, but he wants a slightly greater envelope in terms of where and how he can use arms against russia. the united states is trying to balance what happens on the battlefield against, how would i call it, provoking russia to escalate, and there is also a tension underneath the surface between the united states and zelenskyy, not only over all this and the uncertainty of if donald trump were to be elected, but what ought to define success? mr. zelenskyy wants to liberate all the territory he lost, not just since 2022 but, more important, since 2014. people like me look and say, that s not wildly realistic. the definition of success may have to be dialed down. that s underneath it all. what do we have to accomplish here?

Confronting putin is it s evolving we re getting a little more forward. we re pushing on putin a little bit more. the white alice in recent days is an authorized, the ukrainians to use american weapons to strike back against in russian territory and to shoot down russian aircraft over russia that are threatening ukraine. these are significant it moves, putin can hear it now in the rhetoric and he can see the response. so i think we re moving to tighten the noose on mr. putin and his aggression in ukraine step-by-step, carefully, bringing the allies together. i think it was a really powerful speech, just the right time, just the right moment. and obviously, he s got the mantle of ronald reagan behind him. so i think it has some enormous domestic impact as well. good point leah, europe presidential historian as well. you teach at the johns hopkins university. there was certainly a lot of focus on ronald reagan

reporter: biden recently took executive action to severely restrict asylum for migrants at the border, but it s too early to tell whether that will win over voters, like retired chemical engineer, unhappy with biden s handling of the border, but that doesn t translate to a vote for trump. do you know who you re going to vote for? it will not be trump. i can assure that. reporter: chris, a lot of liberal advocates want to see biden reelected say this is happening in part because the administration has ceded the territory to republicans, instead of offering a coherent narrative on the issue of their own. david noriega, thank you so much for that. up ahead, a stronger than expected jobs report out this morning, so why is that both good news and bad news? we ll be right back. ig rht back.
