Indian American filmmaker Manjari Makijany is taking skateboards to rural India and you can witness it on Netflix.
Her debut feature, âSkater Girl,â which is coming to Netflix June 11, showcases how Prerna, a teenager growing up in rural India, comes of age when sheâs introduced to the sport of skateboarding. As a result, she has to fight the odds to follow her dreams and compete in the national championship.
The film, starring debutante Rachel Saanchita Gupta as Prerna, highlights the challenges of constructing one of Indiaâs largest skateparks to drive social change and showcases the struggles of empowering women in a remote village in Rajasthan.

There is still hope for Filipino stories to be recognized at the Oscars this year. According to a story by Film Development Academy of the Philippines, among the films the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences still considering for the Best Picture award are the movies “Lingua Franca,” “A Thousand Cuts,” and “Yellow Rose.”
The three feature films are among the 366 titles eligible for the award, the highest count for Best Picture in the last five decades.

Raya and the Last Dragon, Disney’s latest animated movie, brings cause for celebration among many in Asian and Asian-American communities. The film is a landmark moment for Southeast Asian representation in Hollywood: Raya is Disney’s first Southeast Asian princess, and is voiced by Kelly Marie Tran, the first Southeast Asian actor to lead an animated feature from the studio. Set in the fantasy land of Kumandra, which Disney has said is inspired by the cultures of Southeast Asia, the story follows the quest of the eponymous heroine as she searches for the fabled dragon Sisu in order to restore a broken world. The film—which is available on Disney+ with Premier Access and in select theaters on March 5— was co-written by Vietnamese-American screenwriter Qui Nguyen and Malaysian-American screenwriter Adele Lim, the latter of whom is best known for co-writing

The story of an undocumented Filipina in the United States who dreams of becoming a successful musician will move Philippine audiences with the premiere of the Filipino-American musical drama flick “Yellow Rose,” on SKY Movies Pay-Per-View on January 29 (Friday).
Featuring an ensemble of renowned Pinoy talents such as Grammy Award-winner and Tony Awards nominee Eva Noblezada, Princess Punzalan, and Broadway icon Lea Salonga, the film highlights the story of Rose Garcia (Eva), an undocumented Filipina girl living in a small town in Texas.
Unfortunately, her aspirations come to a halt when her mother, Priscilla (Princess), gets arrested by the state authorities for immigration issues. She then leaves her familiar life, fleeing to Austin, Texas, where she embarks on a whole new journey for herself.
