Shirley Chen '22 Takes the Lead in Indie Drama "Beast Beast" | Arts

Shirley Chen ‘22 discovered her love of theater through high school plays — but that happened long before she ever acted in one. As a kid, she’d sit in the audience of her older brother’s performances, awestruck by the magic of the show and the bonds between its actors.
“Seeing all the cast members in all their wardrobe and their sweaty faces coming out, and people are handing them flowers,” Chen said, “they've done this together and really connected, and I felt that connection to them as an audience member. There's huge camaraderie... I was always drawn to that.”
This camaraderie is explored and tested in writer-director Danny Madden’s 2021 coming-of-age film, “Beast Beast.” In it, Chen stars as Krista, an aspiring actress navigating friendship, creativity, and loss in high school. Though the film just debuted in theaters in April, it’s a long-time labor of love for Chen, who first auditioned for the role of Krista as a student at the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts (LACHSA).

'Beast Beast' review: Indie drama with a sad American ending

Youthful self-expression is a joyride in a minefield in Danny Madden’s “Beast Beast,” an adrenalized, tone-shifting indie bringing the technology-fueled lives of three suburban souls of varying circumstances, hopes and concerns into pathways destined to converge.
Our introduction to Madden’s trio of fresh-faced, still-forming characters is through self-shot video of their passions. Outgoing, born-to-perform high-schooler Krista (Shirley Chen) is the energized center of her theater class, her phone camera always handy to help hone a monologue or movement piece. New classmate Nito (Jose Angeles) is a soft-spoken skateboarder with a friendly demeanor and uploads that show off his skills. Krista’s next-door neighbor is clean-cut and serious Adam (Will Madden, the director’s brother), at 24 still living at home, and a weapons enthusiast vlogger desperate for social media stardom with the guns-and-patriotism crowd (and therefore successful in his parents’ eyes).

Beast Beast - Movie Review - The Austin Chronicle

Not every short film needs to become a feature. In his 2018 10-minute film, "Krista," writer/director Danny Madden had a laserlike focus on the titular theatre school kid, but the expansion into
Beast Beast brings in two completely new characters and interwoven threads. It also shifts the target of discussion. In the short, Shirley Chen's character uses her acting class as a way to strike back at sexual harassment and objectification. In
Beast Beast the returning Chen plays a different but similar Krista, a high school drama student who crosses paths with Nito (Angeles), a skateboarder with a rough home life but a friendly, earnest demeanor. He's her locker neighbor, but her real neighbor back home is Adam (Madden), a 24-year-old with a YouTube channel about his gun collection.

With traditional release patterns still in turmoil as Hollywood and the world adjusts to the pandemic, it can be intimidating to keep up with when and where new films are being released — but the truth is, there are more movies coming out each week now than ever before. It’s just a question of where to look.
Let
Variety help you find that next well-earned bit of escapism, whether it’s a Milla Jovovich stunt spectacular (like “The Rookies”) or a sexy Japanese manga adaptation (à la “Ride or Die” on Netflix). Here’s a rundown of those films opening this week that
