friday, ed sheeran, it's a great day. we have a tough time in california. those worsening wildfires there, and new one has roared to life near san diego. while crews in and around los angeles struggle to contain the fires there. we want to get right to miguel almaguer with the latest. miguel, good morning to you. >> reporter: savannah, good morning. some 500 structures have been damaged or destroyed in one fire alone. this is the scene playing out neighborhood after neighborhood. the embers can wipe out an entire neighborhood. this morning, six fires are now burning out of control up and down the southern california coast. firefighters, being stretched to the limit, pushing into day five of battling the blazes. the inferno now extending from santa barbara to san diego. eliana moreno with a bird's-eye view of the northern-most blaze. >> the thomas fire has made its way to the pacific ocean. >> reporter: the thomas fire, in ventura county, just a few hours north of los angeles, scorching tpwhraepb,0115,000 ac. nearly 500 structures damaged or destroyed. fire officials say gusty winds and dry conditions could keep firefighters on the ground for at least another week. the neighborhood now blackened and charred. it's not just the wind but visibility. firefighters are having a difficult time tracking these fires. and they're all on the move. the fast-moving fire leaving patricia hampton and her family just 20 minutes to grab their most cherished belongings. >> we could barely breathe. the air was so thick and the fires were huge. >> reporter: fires in l.a. county, just beyond the city lights, and now a new blaze, the lilac fire burning across san diego. the sky glowing red-hot. thick, black smoke billowing above. a state of emergency for san diego county. evacuations and road closures in effect. a mobile home park and other structures destroyed by the fast-moving flames. >> it's extreme weather that we're facing. as the result, we're training. >> reporter: at the straining center, hundreds of horses were killed, and hundreds were evacuated to the delmar fair grounds. more than 6,000 personnel are fighting fires and fatigue. the battle to save the golden state, red hot and far from over. those dangerous santa ana winds expected to blow through. that's the good news. the bad news, they will also become more erratic, pushing the flames in multiple directions. they cannot catch a break in southern california. savannah and hoda, back to you. >> miguel, thank you. something else we're keeping an eye on, the first snow for millions of people, from texas all the way to new england. and dylan is in for al. when is it coming? >> what are we going to get? >> from texas to new england, southern texas. houston, it's 31 degrees right now. it's a very bizarre situation we have setting up. that root has only seen measurable snow 23 times since we have been keeping records, and here's the 23rd time. it will extend 2,000 miles up into new england. we have winter weather advisories and winter storm warnings. this includes the suburbs of atlanta, where we'll see delays at the airports today. we have the wind weather advisories, too. we have the cold air on the western side of this storm system. the immediate coastline of north and south carolina, that's all rain. you go inland and that's where the air is colder, and you will see the snow piling up. jackson, mississippi, we could see two inches of snow. the purples and pinks, that's where we get into the four to six-inch range, and up across south carolina into north carolina and into virginia. and through southern new jersey, up to four inches. a widespread two to four inches, up into boston. keep in mind a lot of this will accumulate on the grassy surfaces, and the roads will be for the most part okay, and when you're not used to driving in the snow, it's time to get the training wheels back on. >> it's hard to fathom how wide a swath this is. >> out of nowhere. >> thank you. now, to a major shakeup on capitol hill. as expected, senator al franken said he is stepping down after accusations of misconduct against him. but he was not the only lawmaker to suddenly resign on thursday. nbc's kasie hunt on capitol hill for us. good morning. >> reporter: senator al franking stepping aside but not without taking a parting shot at president trump on his way out. on capitol hill this morning, a dramatic fall from grace. senator al franken on his way out. >> in the coming weeks, i will be resigning as a member of the united states senate. >> reporter: at times defensive. >> some of the allegations against me are simply not true. others, i remember very differently. >> reporter: and also reflective, arguing he's earned a reputation as a championship of women. >> i know there's been a different picture of me painted over the last few weeks. but i know who i really am. >> reporter: and taking a parting shot across the aisle. >> i, of all people, am aware there is some irony in the fact that i am leaving, while a man who bragged his assault, sits in the oval office. >> reporter: it's a stunning end to the political career of the former "snl" star that became a punch line. >> i know this photo looks bad. it also is bad. >> reporter: franken apologized to leann tweeden, and initially tried to keep his job. but when a seventh accuser said she was touched inappropriately, his party turned on him. >> do you think it was the right thing to do? >> i think it was. >> reporter: the bad behavior could put more pressure on republicans, if roy moore, who denied allegations of conduct with teenagers, wins the senate seat on tuesday. >> this is not our best foot forward with roy moore, and it will have, i think, long-term damage for the party. >> reporter: also in trouble this morning, republican congressman trent franks of arizona, saying he plans to resign amid an ethics committee investigation into misconduct. franks on thursday said he talked to former female staffers about being surrogate mothers for his children. franks joining john conyers in stepping down, after women across the country have said, me too. franks is the third member of congress to step down this week, amid these types of allegations, following john conyers and al franken. next in minnesota, the democratic governor will appoint somebody to temporarily fill franken's seat, but that election when it comes up for permanent re-election in 2018 could be pretty competitive. >> kasie, thank you very much. we are seeing violence and protests in the middle east, following president trump's decision to recognize jerusalem as the capital of israel. nbc's richard engel is right there in jerusalem in the thick of things. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. we are in east jerusalem at damascus gate. and behind that wall is jerusalem's old city, which is a maze of small alleys and streets. we were in the old city to cover palestinian demonstrations against president trump's recent statements, and while we were there we found ourselves in the midst of a israeli crackdown. other jerusalem in jerusalem. palestinians left the mosque in old jerusalem city. palestinians tried to demonstrate, but israeli police forces were ready for them. they're not allowing the protesters to move out of the old city. breaking up the demonstrators, with force. pushing and shoving down the narrow alleys. >> reporter: israeli security forces are trying to prevent people from gathering and reaching the main street and trying to break up the demonstration, and before they are able to congregate, for the palestinians, this is their way of showing they don't accept the movement for jerusalem. they want it to be the centerpiece of their capital. president trump ruled that out, backing israel, which claims of jerusalem as its own. this isn't just a battle over real estate. for many muslims, this is a issue of faith and justice. the mosque is revered, protests have spread to turkey, pakistan and over nations where many believe president trump is trying to give control of an islamic holy site to israel, a move, they say, they'll fight. there's been others and other jerusalem areas in the west bank. we spoke to israeli's police spokesman, and they have enough to contain the situation. back to you. >> thank you, richard. in the meantime, the crisis of a looming government shutdown have been averted temporarily, and congress has now passed a stop gap measure that will keep the government going. >> reporter: good morning, to you. president trump is going to sign the spending bill today. the bottom license plate when it comes to the threat of a shutdown, congress kicked the can down the road a couple more weeks saving the big budget fight for later this month. on capitol hill, crisis averted, at least for now. >> the motion to reconsider is on the table. >> the joint resolution is passed. >> reporter: republicans avoiding a shutdown ahead of today's deadline, passing a short-term bill to fund the government for another two weeks. postponing the budget battle until december 22nd, right before christmas. the votes coming hours after president trump hosted congressional leaders who bailed on an invitation last week. unresolved, democrats' demands for more money to combat the opiod epidemic. >> we will not leave here without a daca fix. >> reporter: compounding the challenge for republicans, their race to put a tax bill on the president's desk by christmas. also on the hill, just days after president trump tweeted the fbi's representation is in tatters, the director, christopher wray, defended the institution. >> there's no finer institution than the fbi, and no finer people than the men and women who work there. >> reporter: with a politically-charged hearing, with doubt on robert mueller's team, wray denied political bias is tainting the investigations. john lewis who was beaten fighting for civil rights, said he will boycott the event. the georgia democrat insisting, president trump's attendance and his hurtful policies are an insult to the people portrayed in this civil rights museum. the white house calling it unfortunate that lewis and another congressional black caucus member won't be attending. president trump will head south for a campaign rally in pensacola. that's just hours away from the alabama border. roy moore is not expected to attend. one final note from the white house. the white house says the president will have a physical exam early next year. and the results of it will be made public. press secretary, sarah huckaby sanders, dismissing the slurring of the president, saying his throat was dry. back to you. >> peter alexander wrapping up the headlines from the white house. thank you. we're learning more about the victims and the gunman at a deadly shooting at a high school in new mexico. tammy leitner is there. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, hoda. still, so many unanswered questions. we don't know if the shooter was a student at the school or why he did this. what we know is a small, tight knit community is coming together to grieve the loss of the two teenage victims. >> do we have contact with the school? >> reporter: this morning, police are trying to determine a motive in a deadly high school shooting. >> i'm at the bottom the stairs. in the middle of that building, the window is shot out and i think the officers went inside. >> the description of suspect? anyone have a description of suspect? >> reporter: two students were killed at this remote high school in aztec, new mexico. the victims were identified as francisco hernandez and casey jordan marquez. >> she was a wonderful girl. i know she would be happy, everybody coming to mourn her. >> our friends and neighbors of aztec have witnessed a very heinous and horrific act. there are two children that have been killed. >> reporter: the suspect also dead. officials describing the shooter as a male but offering few other details. it happened early thursday, as classes were getting under way. shots rang out. terrified students and teachers, hiding in classrooms. some behind locked doors. >> there was a lot of banging going around. next thing we knew, our teachers were yelling to get in the closet. and it was gunshots. >> you hope that nothing ever happens at a school. those are place where's we send our kids to be safe. >> reporter: some residents in disbelief. others offering their condolences to the fallen. >> i'm so grateful that each of you are out here tonight. great for you to be here and support each other in this horrific event that has taken police in our community. >> i'm a teacher at aztec high school. and i want to tell my students, i love you guys. >> reporter: a small community left to pick up the pieces. classes have been cancelled today. authorities have not released the name of the shooter or how he died, but we are expecting an california. four still burning in the los angeles area. two new fires broke out thursday in riverside and san diego counties. in total, more than 140,000 acres burned so far. nearly 200,000 people have been evacuated. 500 buildings, including homes have been destroyed. you should note the impact on the air quality in the bay area this weekend. cold weather trapping unhealthy air and smoke. today is the first of three spare the air days. no fires this weekend. cool start to the morning, but things should be nice this weekend. >> it should be warming up. we are saying limit your outdoor time, no wood burning. today and the next three days. we have that pink and orange sunrise we are seeing across the bay area as a result of the wildfire and looking in the north bay, 31 degrees. we tied to a police shooting in arizona. morgan radford is here with the story. morgan, good morning. this is tough to watch. >> incredibly difficult video to see. this morning a family in mourning and a community in shock that now a former officer found not guilty of second degree murder and this disturbing new video has been released of an unarmed arizona man being shot by police. in the moments before the gun goes off, it shows the man sobbing, begging, pleading for police not to shoot him. what his family's attorney calls an execution, plain and simple. >> do not shoot me. >> then listen to my instructions. don't talk! listen! >> reporter: newly releasedfoot moments. >> crawl toward me! crawl towards me! >> yes, sir. >> reporter: the disturbing video made public after jurors found former arizona police officer not guilty. >> not guilty. >> reporter: during the trial, he told jurors he thought the 26-year-old father of two was reaching for a gun. his attorneys referencing a point in the video when he appears to move his right hand towards his waistband. >> when movements are made consistent with drawing a weapon, you have one second to make up your mind. >> reporter: according to kpnx an internal investigation found schaefer who have been drinking may have been trying to pull up his pants. the shooting happened in at a hotel in mesa, arizona. officers were called to the scene after reports of a man pointing a rifle out a window. according to officials, he did have a pellet gun in his room, but he did not have it on him when he was shot. in a facebook post from 2006, his widow called for justice. >> what happened was wrong. and i hope one day justice will come. and the mesa police department will give me answers for why they killed him. >> now, the video shown at the trial was only made public after the officer was found not guilty of both second degree murder and reckless manslaughter. the attorney for his wife posted that video and she's now suing the police department for $75 million, ladies. >> that is hard to watch. quite a verdict, morgan. thank you very much. we're going to switch gears and head over to ms. dylan for a check of the weather. >> still critical of fire danger because of the very dry conditions and the also very gusty winds. this is for southwestern california. and take a look at the winds. they're still expected to gust near 50 to 60 miles per hour across the good portion of the area up to los angeles, about 35 to 40-mile-per-hour gusts. that's certainly enough wind to help spread these fires very, very rapidly. again, without any rain in sight, it's not going to help firefighters at all. as that smoke travels up into the northwest and the wind are calmer up that way. air quality advisories in effect. we are watching the cold front that will reinforce the lake-effect snow. and this bigger storm system with texas seeing measurable snowfall. louisiana, alabama, mississippi and eventually all we will have some moderate air quality today. limit your time outdoors. our temperatures today will be warming up quite a bit after this chilly start. expect a high of 69 degrees in san jose. 66 in concord. very nice and comfortable in k oakland, 65. we will continue on with dry weather. well above normal temperatures for the inland areas, reaching up to 70 degrees by the end of the weekend. >> this "sunday night
