new audiotape is revealing what he may or may not have known. good morning. i'm dave clark. >> i'm tori campbell. we are moving into the main event of a powerful spring storm. the ponding storm began in the last hour. we have team county. we begin with steve in the weather center. >> no doubt about it this system is beginning to punch. the first system gets kicked out and here comes the next one. we have talked about some of that rain. it's beginning to fill in. the front is still back aways. we still have back here a ways to go. it will go to the noon hour, come in tighter. you can see the light greens starting to light up in napa county, in santa rosa and marin county. there's been moderate to steady rain, especially parts of marin county. it's a steady cold rain. the wind is starting to crank up as well. here's sal with an update. it's wet in the north bay, san francisco 101. the traffic is busy coming up to the 80 slit. even though most of the water, as steve mentioned, is up to the north bay, it's also soaking the entire bay area as we look at 237 and mill peteous. you'll see slow traffic. in the north bay we already had reports of standing water and flooding in marin county. let's go to ktvu reporter kraig debro. the chp issued a warning for flooding. we've got our eye on it right now. it doesn't appear to be anything out of the ordinary right now. again, the driving rain is making conditions dangerous. we've also just learned that schools in point pray station, toe mal less and on the coast in invernness have closed because of flooding. earlier this morning on highway 880 in san lee an droa we had a condition. chp got a call that there was flooding. they had reports that a car had hydroplaned and spun out. by the time they got there there was no car. there were three drains that were clogged. they were able to unclog two. but a third drain was still clogged with a lot of asphalt, a lot of debris, a lot of leaves. caltrans worked on the situation. it was cleared up before 6 a.m. this morning. they originally closed two lanes. that went down to one. as of 6:00, all lanes were reopen. highway 101 is starting to gather steam. southbound cars, you can see off in the distance. those are the taillights. yag, chps had -- again, chp has issued a warning. we've got our eye on this and school closings. reporting for ktvu, kraig debro. san jose police are busy investigating the 13th homicide of the night last night at barry essa road. this is a picture of the crime scene. police responded to reports that someone had been shot. an unidentified wounded man walked into a hospital. he later died from his injuries about 1:00 this morning. radiation levels in tokyo's water have dropped making it safe for people to drink it again. the radiation had been leaking from a damaged plant at a fukushima power plant in jay pafnlt this morning three workers were injured when their feet touched reactor material while fixing cable. the barry bonds trial starts in about 20 minutes. tara moriarty has more on what's on the tape and what will happen next. >> reporter: jurors were rivetted by the conversation on this tape. it was made by bond's former childhood friend steve hoskins. he will resume the stand where the defense will resume its cross-examination. hoskins, yesterday told a jury that he witnessed greg anderson, bonds' personal trainer, leave the bedroom with a syringe. he said he was so worried that he taped the conversation. in you listen closely anderson is talking about performance enhancing drugs. >> reporter: now hoskins said he made the tape in march 2003 and intended to play it for barry bonds pea father. the defense said it was clearly made in april after the pair's business relationship turned sour. that's when bonds' accused hoskins of forging his signature. bonds said in 2003 he did not knowingly take it. he thought this was flax seed oil and arthritis cream. sometime in the next coming weeks, ex-mistress kimberly bell will also take the stand. it was revealed yesterday during testimony there's another mistress, but she is not on the list to appear. we're live in san francisco. i'm tara traffic through lafayette, it doesn't look all that bad. doesn't look like the wet weather is quite as severe. it hasn't reached lafayette or contra costa just yet. when you get to the toll plaza, you already notice it's wet and may get more wet according to steve. let's talk about the east bay in hayward, already seeing slow traffic 880 to highway 92 and driving to fremont. across the bay highway 101 and 280 looking good. if you're driving through the south bay, the slowest traffic is on highway 85 in the lower part of the valley. let's go to steve. >> all right. our system is moving in. it's giving us some rain, some leet sted -- light steady rain. he said it feels like it's 41 degrees. so this cold air is beginning to come in. the cold air is enhancing. there's a lot of cold air, just great fantastic support, upper levels, lower levels. it will turn quieter this afternoon. show you whams going on -- what's going on in the darker green from marin county towards napa county and santa rosa and working its way towards the south bay and the east bay. there's light stuff but the heaviest is poised to move in. it goes until at least 1:00. the national weather service will update about 9:00, 9:30 in the morning. flood warning is out for the yellow cause bypass. high wind warning is out for the car keen us in straight. gusts over 80 are likely. heavier rains will focus on the russian river. but the santa cruz mountains, again, could take about two to three and a half inches of rain. 40s. cold out there. it's going to stay cold. there's one system going by. here's the next one. it wraps up. there are all sorts of snow advisories, winter weather advisories, down to 2500 feet from the mountains of lake county, tahoe, yosemite. there will be a lot of snow and a lot of wind. rain and wind for us, heavy rain this morning, showers, possible thundershowers by this afternoon, low 50s for some on the highs to mid-50s. cold air plunges in, lower snow levels. another system saturday, gave a touching tribute to his friend elizabeth taylor and why there may be picketers at her funeral. good morning, a really cold rain from napa to highway 3, and highway 80 into marin county as well. it's also stretching -- look at that line back towards hillsburg and santa rosa but beginning to develop and pick up towards the santa cruz mountains and the san mateo coast. we're still following two developing stories at miami international airport. flights were delayed or canceled because of a huge jet fuel file. just over an hour ago part of the airport was evacuated because of a suspicious package found at one of the terminals. the bomb squad is there right now. the police will determine if it's a hazard and detonate it if it's needed. >> i want to show you new video, the huge flames of that jet fuel fire at the miami airport. more than 100 firefighters rushed to the scene. it took them three hours to contain the flames. no one was hurt. this has crippled the airport. so far 87 flights have been canceled, including american airlines flight 431 top san francisco. there was a scary case at reagan national airport in washington, d.c. we have the report from our d.c. newsroom. two planes were forced to and without any clearance because the air traffic control tower was silent. >> reporter: reagan national airport is just on the other side of the capitol across from the potomac. only one air traffic controller was in the tower at the time and he was asleep. the pilots were forced to and on their on yesterday morning. the planes landed safely after the pilots broadcast their progress. here's a call that one of them nied a facility -- made to a facility. >> no answer. >> reporter: now the secretary of transportation is now ordering more air traffic controllers to be in the tower on that overnight shift at reagan national airport. he also wants a review of staffing levels at airports across the country. reporting live from washington, d.c., ktvu, channel 2 news. overnight french air strikes hit the interyour of libya. the u.s. military said the coalition air strikes have destroyed libya's air force. rebel forces are pushing towards the capital city of tripoli. but gadhafi's loyalists show no sign of backing down. the trial of the two men accused of killing clock check journalist chauncey bailey will continue. the admitted gunman will take the stand. he's expected to testify against the two plotting to kill bailey. yesterday a police officer testified. he found two weapons during a 2007 raid on the black muslim bakery. san jose moves a step closer to closing the budget gap. they tentatively agreed to mayor chuck reed's request. seven city unions, including the police are still negotiating. >> if the others don't come, ultimately the council has to decide whether to continue employment. they have a right to go to arbitration. >> if all 11 unions agree to the cuts, the city will save $38 million, but the city manager's office source tells ktvu there will stem be -- still be layoffs. now that san mateo officials know what their budget will look like, they're scheduling public hearings. the county manager released the proposal that eliminates 270 jobs and asks the 20 departments to make a minimum of 20% in cuts. the first public hearing is next tuesday. a controversial kansas church known for its many protests are now targeting elizabeth taylor. the church said it mr. picket elizabeth taylor's funeral, most likely because of her humanitarian work for aids respoi. the church is known for its extreme tans on homosexuality. the supreme court upheld its right to protest. >> the voice of elton john are forming "don't let the sun go down on me." this is a tribute to elizabeth taylor. he took time out to honor pacific tsunami warning center said the quake was too far inland. again, a 7.0 magnitude quake just hit myanmar. our storm watch coverage continues. we're keeping an eye on the sacramento valley. this follows a tornado that ripped through the town of williams east of clear lake yesterday afternoon. the national weather service said winds up to 85 miles an hour cause lad lot of damage, shingles blown off of rooftops. luckily, no one was hurt. today the winds could top about 70 miles an hour. now some video of an awkward moment for president obama. the president was returning home a little early from a five-day trip from latin america. apparently the staff didn't -- know he was coming home and the door was locked. he had a similar mishap on a visit to china. he tried to make a graceful exit. he pulled and tugged on two big doors, realized his mistake and went out the other door. sal is watching our commute. a busy morning. what's happening? >> i had an awkward moment. we're all human. take a look at san francisco. we have the windshield wiper on the camera. northbound 101 is slow. you'll be driving in heavy rain. it's going to be windy as well, a big backup. the rain is winds, heavy rain and flooding. we caught pg&e crews. the crew has been busy overnight. already worked on power outages in sheffield village and pg&e have underground crews in berkeley. we want to take you further south. the biggest concern for scotts valley is when the next storm hits, full ground saturation, moving rocks at the bottom of the slide could collapse four of the hillside. about 50 residents have been affected so far. access has become the biggest obstacle. they expect a foot path to make a temporary road so vehicles can get threw to bring emergency supplies to residents who aren't able to get out. issues aren't expected to subside. the national weather service issued a small stream advisory for the entire bay area. a wind advisory is also in effect until this afternoon. we've been standing out here for the past 10 or 20 minutes and the rain has kicked up, especially the wind. it's chilly. commuters will experience this. reporting live, jade hernandez. >> thank you, jade. we've been telling you about the school closures on the marin county coast due to the stormy weather. caltrans has a warning. traffic is restricted on the stretch of highway one near green gullch farm. the restrictions are expected to last for at least the next few days. this morning the labor says it was a slight drop in the number of people applying for unemployment insurance last week. 382,000 filed for first time benefits. applications have been on a steady decline since the and of january. however, the number needs to drop top indicate a sustained increase in hiring. continuing claims also fell to their lowest numbers since september 2008. some pretty good news for anyone looking for a job this summer. more than half of the hiring managers who were asked said they plan to hire seasonal workers this year. the survey by snag a job.com shows managers plan to hire 7% more this year compared to last. a new poll shows support has dropped among california voters for governor brown's special election plan to extend temporary tax and fee increases. back in january our survey found two out of three voters thought a special election was a good idea but now only a cash and -- an an ipod and several pizzas. on the same street an ipod was stolen from two teenage boys who were attacked. another crime alert, this time for residents in the san francisco's marina district. police have seen a rise in burglaries over the past couple of months mostly between buchanan and polk streets. the police said unwitting residents are allowing thieves to follow them inside their buildings and garages. residents are advised not to let anyone in unless you're certain that person lives there. >> we want to check in with sal, keeping a close eye on the commute. it really makes it impressive when you can admit to a mistake and a little faux pas that we make on the air. let's take a look at what we have. the traffic is going to be bills sip and the rain is not helping. fender benders, nothing major, which is good but still slow traffic. it's barely moving there. the commute in san francisco has affected southbound 101 at cesar chavez. northbound 101 is also going to be busy. northbound 280 is very slow coming out of daly city. you have quite a bit of slow traffic. he told me that this afternoon, although this mi not be as bad, the commute will not be great either. let's talk about steve. around 7:00 things will farther apart and -- fall apart and they are. that system continues to develop with unbelievely strong jet stream. it is beginning to ping back towards san pablo bay, close towards vallejo, marin county into san francisco. now along the peninsula and into the santa cruz mountains. when you see the darker green, that's a system starting to move. flood advisories until 1:00, 2:00. by 9:00, the national weather service might update these. there are flood warnings for the yellow causeway and lake port. it's cold in lake county. temperatures there are starting to plunge. it's going to be a day where snow makes this down to low levels. windies are -- winter weather advisory -- wind advisories are out. you can see gust over 50, 60 miles. the santa cruz mountains, two to three inches plus along with the rushing rivers. it's a raw, windy day. temperatures won't go much warmer than low to mid-50s. the key is they doctor down
