an abc news exclusive. and do bikinis really work? an abc news exclusive. and do bikinis really work? selling you burgers? captions paid for by abc, inc. and good morning, to all yof you. diane sawyer. robin is back. it's wednesday, july 8th, 2009. nice to have all of us together again. >> it is. such a moving day. such a moving tribute. by some estimates, a billion people around the world watched the tribute. and what we'll remember most, michael's 11-year-old daughter, paris, surrounded by her aunts and uncles, letting the world know how she feels about her dad. >> the focus shifts back to the investigation, and the questions of how and why michael jackson died. news this morning about marks found on his arm when he died. we'll tell you all the latest. we'll have the latest with senior law and justice correspondent, jim avila, who is in los angeles. good morning, jim. >> reporter: good morning, robin. the jackson family has not finished saying good-bye. in fact, michael jackson's body is at an undisclosed location. and final arrangements for the actual burial have not been released. michael jackson's serious prescription drug habit left both of his arms scarred with track markets, according to investigators probing the circumstances of his death. abc news has learned the marks are consistent with the use of the potent sedative, diprivan, sources tell us was found at jackson's home. jackson's friends are split over the seriousness of his drug use. former spokesman, stuart backerman, said the effects were easy to spot. >> i never saw him take any prescription drugs myself. but i saw the effects. he sort of looked at me very quizzically, like he didn't even know me. and i knew what was goings on there. >> reporter: but his former defense attorney, tom measure row, that despite appearances during the 2005 child molesting trial, he doubts jackson had a serious problem. >> i was with michael for five months in the trial of his life. he was always was very conscious, very articulate. he understood what i was telling him. and he was responsive. i never saw any indication that he was medicated or drugged. >> reporter: jackson's death certificate shows the cause of death as deferred. sortses tell abc news, at the time of his death, he was addicted to two powerful pain relievers, demoral and oxycontin, taking those drupgs daily. but the coroner has not said if the drugs were linked to his sudden death. the coroner is holding michael jackson's brain for testing. that is not unusual. we're also told that the track marks are significant because the scar tissue holds some of the drug that was last injected. and that should help investigators identify what killed michael jackson. diane? >> okay, jim. thanks to you. we're going to hear now from a doctor whose name has been in the headlines. dr. arnold klein, michael jackson's friend, dermatologist for 25 years. dr. klein is a doctor of dermatologist at ucla medical school. he is also well-known to famous names all throughout hollywood. what did he know about the drug use and diprivan? he saw michael jackson, the monday before jackson's death, that thursday. you saw him on the monday before his death, three days before his death? >> absolutely. yes. >> and we are told that he weighed about 125 pounds. that he was in enormous pain. he was having trouble sleeping. did you know of these things? >> no. i didn't know. there was no trouble sleeping in my office. he was not in terrible pain when i saw him. he danced in the office. he danced for my patients. he was very, very happy and dancing. >> you saw nothing that would have caused you worry? >> i saw nothing at that point in time that would make me worry whatsoever. but i always was concerned about him because i always was worried about other doctors. but here's the problem with michael. no matter what he wanted, someone would give it to him. >> you're taking pills? you're talking medication? >> yes. the very rich and the very poor and the very famous get the worst medical care. >> you're saying, being as wealthy as he was, he could go to doctors and get anything he wanted. did you know what he was getting? did he tell you what he was on? >> no. not whatsoever. many years ago, i knew what he was taking. and i told him he was insane for taking one pill of that. >> oxycontin? >> oxycontin wasn't around by then. but what was around at that point, was dilauded, which is poison. i id throw that in the trash. i wish i could have been there every minute of the day. >> he confided in you. and he was coming to your office, to you as a physician. doesn't every doctor need to know every medication a person is on when they see them? did you ever say list them for me? >> absolutely. but it doesn't mean the patient is going to tell you the absolute truth. i have records of every medicine because i diagnosed him with lupis many years ago. i was aware he took various medication. but i did not know he was getting treated by any other physician other than myself. >> you saw no signs of him overmedicated? >> no. i didn't see problems of the slurred speech, shortened movements or anything like that whatsoever. but my expertise is not addiction. my expertise is aesthetics. what's important for me to tell you is i feel horrible for what happened because i really, really love this person because he was a person who was the consummate entertainer, that could get upn the stage and sing. and once he began entertaining, he virtually loved every, single person in the audience. >> i want to give you a chance to respond to something. you well know there's been one account that your name has arisen as one of five doctors that gave him prescription medications. >> i'm not one of the five doctors. i'm not one of the five doctors. i'm not been examined by anyone. okay? i've not been contacted by the police in los angeles. so, i don't know what to tell you. but i'm not one of the doctors. >> so, that report is -- >> i was his doctor. >> -- untrue. >> i've given him medication, yes. but you can take all of the medication i gave him in a year and nothing would happen. okay? >> you didn't give him the painkillers we're talking about here? the demorals and the percocets and the oxycontin. >> i don't want to discuss how i treated him. in discussing how i treat him, i didn't give him the crap they talk about. i never prescribed oxycontin in my fe. how am i going to prescribe deprovan when i don't know how to use it. >> i want to be clear. this is an important thing you're saying this afternoon. that you are saying you never gave him the kind of drugs that would have fueled addiction? you're sayin that? >> no. i have to tell you that, i have sedated him in the past. you have to hear from me. i sedated him in the past. i had to put him through painful procedures. he had lupis. and a terrible acne scar on his face. when you do this, at times, you have to sedate him with mild levers of drugs. nothing the likes of what they're describing. i was not o one of the doctors o participated of giving him overdose of drugs or too much. i was the one who limited everything. who stopd everything. >> did you say to yourself, could d i have saved he sd i have saved him? >> i in the same position, the same chair for eight hours. i went i went to an almost insttaneous shot. an instantaneous shot. and i didn't know what to do. i couldn't believe it. i felt s so awful. suspect, are doctors, you are suspect, are complicit. what do you what do you y? >> your moment from the memorial yesterday, you were saying. >> yeah. it had to be jennifer hudson's voice. it was just amazing. >> there's so many. so many moving moments from the jackson memorial. we're going to take a look back now. so many people around the world london to tokyo, to sydney, gathered together to watch the service live on tv. comforting one another. it was more dignified than perhaps some might have expected because during his life, of course, michael jackson, surrounded by controversy. and sometimes a circus-like atmosphere. but yesterday, there was just music, memory, and pure emotion. ♪ hallelujah hallelujah ♪ ♪ we're going to see the king >> reporter: the staples center was transformed into almost a church. filled with music, poetry, and moving tributes. ♪ gone too soon >> reporter: usher, breaking down, singing "gone too soon." the entire jackson family, rising to embrace him. the brothers each wearing a sequinned glove. also, his children. ♪ we make a better day just you and me ♪ >> reporter: and there's family, friends and fans grieve, the most poignant and wrenching home of the entire memorial, a complete surprise. when at the very end, jackson's 11-year-old daughter, paris, approached the microphone. >> i just wanted to say -- >> speak up, sweetheart. speak up. >> ever since i was born, daddy has been the best father you could ever imagine. and i just wanted to say i love him so much. ♪ >> reporter: jackson's music took center stage. john mayer, with a somber, instrumental version of "human nature." stevie wonder. and jennifer hudson, bringing down the house with an impassioned and soulful, "will you be there." ♪ i will be there i will be there ♪ >> reporter: and even those who could not be present, dr. maya angelou, wrote special words, which queen latifah read. >> sing our stars amongst the stars and walk our dances across the face of the moon. >> reporter: the reverend al sharpton, turning directly to michael. >> the love will show he didn't know in vain. and i want his three children to know, wasn't nothing strange about your daddy. it was strange what your daddy had to deal with. >> reporter: and brooke shields, who once dated jackson, took a page from his favorite song. >> smile, though your heart is aching. today, although our hearts are aching, we need to look up. where he is undoubtedly perched in a crescent moon. and we need to smile. ♪ you just smile >> his brother, jermaine. i was so struck, diane, by the atmosphere, both inside and outside. the tone from yesterday was just perfect, i thought. >> and even outside, people gathering around?
