administration has spoken out in support of gay marriage. during an interview, education secretary arne duncan said same-sex couples should be able to legally marry. it was his first public about the issue. yesterday vice president joe biden said he's comfortable with same-sex marriage. both biden's and duncan's comments may put them at odds with president obama who has said his position on gay marriage is evolving. now to the race for the white house. president obama's team launched into its first week of the official re-election campaign with a major ad. the economy is the main focus. steve handelsman has the latest. >> reporter: in the battleground state of ohio, mitt romney today accused the president of steering the u.s. to the left. actually to the east across the land. he is taking america on a path towards europe. it is not going to work here. europe is in real trouble. >> reporter: two days after president obama kicked off his re-election campaign. >> four more years! >> reporter: new national polls show the race virtually tied. romney up by 1% in a survey of swing state voters by politico. obama ahead by 2% in a similar poll by "usa today" and gallup. the president is making his case for re-election in a rare all-positive tv ad. to run in nine swing state battle grounds. >> today our auto industry is backfiring on all cylinders. our greatest enemy brought to justice by our greatest heroes. instead of losing jobs, we are creating them. >> reporter: mitt romney's campaign put up a video slamming the obama record. back to your open. socialist francois hollande was elected. >> anything that slows down the global recovery is bad news for the president and could affect the re-election. >> reporter: especially in a race that's so close now in the polls. a race that seems sure to be a referendum on recovery. i'm steve handelsman, news4. dozens of guilty verdicts handed down today in one of the deadliest shootings in recent history here in washington. five men are convicted in connection with the south capitol street massacre of 2010. they are accused of killing five people and wounding several others over the course of two days. all apparently over a missing piece of costume jewelry. san kwan kartd carter, orlando carter, robert boast, lamar williams are all convicted of murder and dozens of other felony counts. pat collins will have more from the survivors of these crimes coming up tonight at 5:00. john edwards' core ums trial is in its third week. prosecutors are trying to show that edwards knowingly and illegally used campaign donations to hide his pregnant mistress. edwards and his daughter cate arrived at the courthouse this morning. today alex forger was back on the witness stand. he is the lawyer for virginia heiress rachel bunny melon. memorandum only gave thousands of dollars to edwards when he ran for president and that the money was for a personal need of edwards. prosecutors contend that some of that money was used in the coverup. edwards denies breaking any law. new numbers out today say nearly half of american adults are projected to be obese by the we are 2030 unless the country makes significant changes. the growing problem has prompted many experts to look at ways of preventing obesity long before adulthood focusing even on toddlers. erica edwards has our story. >> reporter: america's scales continue to tip in the wrong direction. the prevalence of obesity is now predicted to reach 42% of adults by the year 2030. slightly lower than earlier projections, but still expected to add billions of dollars to health care costs. >> probably the best treatment is prevention. >> reporter: obesity experts say the best time for prevention is childhood. >> for many parents, a chubby baby or chubby toddler in their mind is a sign they are doing something well. >> reporter: new research found many mothers of overweight toddlers misjudge their child's body size assuming the kids are at healthy weight. 20% of mothers of healthy, average sized children wanted their kids to pout a few more pounds. this is a good time for pete yeahtritions to step in with a growth chart and ensure they are on the right track. >> pediatricians don't provide the reassurance, they may be trying to fatten their children up. >> reporter: overweight children are likely to be overweight teens and then overweight adults. >> it makes sense to focus on children to prevent obesity in the first place. but we also need to reach out to adults. >> reporter: health and human services secretary sebelius spoke at a conference monday. she and others agree that the nation can't afford to expand the waistline any longer. erica edwards, nbc news. other new obesity related research focus owes teenagers and their television viewing habits. those who watch the most tv, a fewer fruit -- ate fewer fruits and vegetables each day and consumed more candy and more sodas. cameras captured the moment a tornado tore through a city northeast of tokyo on sunday. the twister touched down 40 mules outside of japan's capital city. a 14-year-old boy died and dozens of others were injured. the tornado tore roofs off houses and snapped tree limbs. about 24,000 homes lost electricity. forecasters say that it was an f-2 tornado with winds as high as 157 miles per hour. tornadoes are rare in the tokyo area. way we are starting off our week. with clouds, right? across the area. and we are waiting on the showers. seems like, you know, we have been overcast much of the day today. take a look. complete canopy of cloud cover throughout the area with our temperatures throughout holding. holding in the 60s, low 70s around the area. radar right now, storm 4 radar, you can see where the showers are. off to the west, south of frostburg. around areas of mineral, around hampshire and harty county in west virginia. there is a little storm there that is building. that will be making its way eastward. moving slowly at about the 10 to 15 miles per hour. so any storms well off to the west. we could see an isolated shower trying to sneak into our area here for the evening hours. that really is it. again, upper 60s, low 70s throughout the area. 70 degrees now in cleveland park. waldorf area. 72 at fairfax city. great falls, down towards culpeper. some of the higher temperatures down you a round fredericksburg, virginia, and stafford at 75 degrees, average high for today is 73. we are going to see the mercury drop, down to the low 60s by 11:00 p.m. again, just a few storms that could be staying well west of our area on your fast forecast. i think those storms west, dry morning coming to us. we will talk more about our storm chances, thunderstorm chances, this week coming up in a mary's, maryland. little warmer south, higher temperatures down there. 70 degrees, reagan national, south wind at 16 miles per hour. dew point temperature not bad. it doesn't feel that sticky or humid as it did at the end of last week. we are going to keep quite a bit of cloud cover around for not only the overnight period but also tomorrow morning. notice the temperatures, though, not too bad, 62 at 11:00. 7:00 a.m. tomorrow morning. just a little cool. watching one great big weather system affect the east coast. we have thunderstorms from texas all the way up to the northeast. look at areas accept round mississippi, louisiana. powerful storms there. more scattered storms, western pennsylvania, western maryland and right through west virginia and ohio. better chance of storms for us tomorrow. and as we watch this cold front that is in areas of ohio make its way eastward for tomorrow morning. we are dry but any time after about 1:00, 2:00, we will start to see showers and then thunderstorms in the potential for moderate to heavy rain comes our way tomorrow. maybe even high winds. big potential west for tomorrow afternoon. then down to the south for late tuesday night and early wednesday morning, yeah, wednesday morning, storm, before we start to get clearing behind that system. wednesday afternoon. so seasonal, dry, 64 for your evening. then for tomorrow morning, it is going to be breezy, definitely cool, 56 to 62 degrees. wind out of the south. it is the southerly wind that's going to help us really see the temperatures rise tomorrow. 73 to 78. again, strong thunderstorms, best chance of those storms will be off to the south. and down to the west. your high tomorrow is 77 degrees. bit of warmth ahead of the cold front. we are down to 74 for wednesday and
