investigation at the point where we stand now? >> good morning, christi. this is a horrible scene, of course. before i get to that, i'm very gratified it seems that this investigation is going according to iko international civil aviation organization protocol, which included what, as nic reported, a psychologist and is important in this whole process. we discussed before that crew altitude is a low stress time what we call phase of flight for something not to be handled in an emergency. so some of the things that i've looked at, after looking at the flight radar 24 data, if, indeed, that is accurate data, indicates this airplane just literally fell out of sky. it slowed down to speed that the airplane isn't possible to maintain lift. it's call an aerodynamic style. the wings no longer supported the airplane.

minute ago, it's real important that we establish the timeline, the communications timeline versus the acars timeline, make sure they match up and make sure that's accurate information before we start to rule out certain possibilities. meanwhile, mr. beatty made a comment a minute ago that i almost had to jump in. the reason a cell phone doesn't work from an airplane isn't because it's being jammed by a signal from a foreign country, it's because you're not near a cell tower. a cell phone just won't work from an airplane above a certain altitude and you're far enough from land. it's really that simple. certain airlines on their long-haul fleets have installed technology that does allow cell calling by collecting the signal and beaming it up via satellite and then back down to the ground or down to the ground through radio frequencies. i don't know if malaysia airlines has that equipment on their 777s, which would have allowed cell phone calling.

also lost all contact has a different meaning in aviation. you not only have oral communication with the pilot and company, the pilot and air traffic control, you have an automatic system that's broadcasting its position back in response to radar. you have radar energy bouncing off the metal skin of the airplane and producing an image. you probably have satellite communication between the engines and other mechanical systems showing up to a satellite bouncing back down to the airline somewhere. so there are many many channels of communications. those are all gone. this plane is not in the air. if it were on the ground someplace populated we'd know it. >> having said that, there are a number of parts of that region which are pretty unpopulated. and it could possibly have landed in one of those areas. that is a possibility, isn't it? >> this airplane needs many many feet of runway to land. you don't have big flat open
