The Ronald Award recognized the top 1% of McDonald's Owner/Operators nationwide who have made exceptional contributions to McDonald's, their local communities, and their guests. This honor is especially impressive, as the pair is one of only a handful of operators to ever receive the award twice. The Morelands have served the McDonald's community for more than 56 years. John Moreland is an Air Force Veteran who served from 1963-1967. While in the Air Force in Austin, Tex., he worked his first shift under the Golden Arches in 1966 at one of just two McDonald's locations in all of Texas at the time. With experience in nearly every facet of the business, John Moreland was officially approved as an Owner/Operator, and in 1980, he and his wife and fellow Owner/Operator, Mary, landed in Southern Illinois where they built their first McDonald's restaurant in West Frankfort. In 1981, the pair received the Ronald Award for the first time and Mary gained her approval as an official McDonald's operator in 1995. Mary Moreland has been a community activist for years, including serving on the West Frankfort school board for 20 years and coaching golf there for 21 years. She was inducted into the Frankfort Community High School Athletics Hall of Fame in 2017 and has served as a trustee on the Southern Illinois Healthcare Foundation board. In addition to a growing business, John and Mary Moreland had a growing family. Daughter, Stephanie and son, Michael grew up with their parents as role models both at home and at the restaurant. After exploring their own paths through college and careers, both children returned to the family business and completed the rigorous "Next Generation" program for children of current Owner/Operators. In September, James Martin Sr. filed an open plea of guilty to one of three Class X counts of sexually assaulting a victim under the age of 13 in exchange for the other two counts being dismissed. According to Mt. Vernon Police Chief Trent Page, the Washington County Sheriff's Department initially took a report on March 11 of a sexual assault that allegedly took place in Mt. Vernon. That information was forwarded to the Mt. Vernon Police Department and their Detective Division investigated the report. It's believed the assault took place six to seven years ago, said Chief Page. Assistant State's Attorney Julie Kozuszek prosecuted the case. ### Community Calendar Page Now lets take a look at some things that we have on our community calendar page. Headlines for Friday, October 14th

Brodey Murbarger, 26, was found guilty of first degree murder on Thursday after the jury deliberated for only an hour. Murbarger was accused in the 2014 disappearance and killing of 15-year-old Megan Nichols. FBI investigator William O'Sullivan testified Wednesday about the more than 7,000 text messages exchanged between Murbarger and Nichols between December 2013 and February 2014. O'Sullivan said the messages at first were romantic and sexual in nature and included several references to the couple planning a runaway in mid-2014. O'Sullivan says that in February 2014 the messages reflected a more tumultuous relationship, with Murbarger at one point calling Nichols 'annoying.' The defense only called Murbarger's father Jayson Murbarger to the stand, as well as the defendant himself to testify. The father and son were asked about blood found in the defendant's car that prosecutors argued was used to transport Megan's body to a rural Boyleston field where it was buried. Jayson Murbarger testified the trunk on his son's car often leaked water, but he was unaware of any other fluids that may be in the trunk. Murbarger took the stand and testified that Nichols' blood was in his car after a sexual encounter in which he used his shirt to clean the blood. Murbarger then said he placed the shirt in the trunk, where leaking water caused the blood to spread. During closing arguments Thursday, the state of Illinois argued that Murbarger has changed his story several times through interviews with police, claiming all stories contradict one another. The state also says during police interviews, Murbarger told others he went to Nichols' house around 9:30 pm July 3, 2014 because he thought she had run away. Through those statements, the state says Murbarger places himself with Nichols on the night and time she disappeared. The defense team for Murbarger says the evidence in the case is speculation and circumstantial, citing there is no motive for Murbarger to commit murder, and no evidence that Nichols' death was due to strangulation. In reference to the varying stories, the defense states Murbarger was an "awkward teen" under a lot of pressure due to rumors circulating of his involvement in Nichols' disappearance and would have been flustered during interrogations. Murbarger's defense attorney says he plans to file for a new trial. The Wayne County Board met last night for it's regular monthly meeting. Headlines for Wednesday, March 9th

The Fairfield City Council met last night and held a public hearing for a potential business district. The idea would increase sales taxes by one percent in its boundaries on most purchases. Downtown merchants Kristi Hornung, Nicole Jordan, Marjorie Jordan, and Mark Turner spoke in favor of the idea, saying the City needs to do something to bring in additional funds to help with building upkeep, bring in more small businesses, and enhance the downtown area. Gary Carter and Cindy Grimes spoke against it; Carter said even a small tax increase would hurt his sales, and both said the current climate with gas prices and inflation does not lend itself to any tax increase. The council will vote on the matter at its meeting on the 22nd. In the Fairfield City Council meeting proper, action began with the seating Cody Attebery on the council to replace Brett Coale as First Ward Aldermen. Alderman Gary Moore motioned to seat Attebery for Coale's unexpired term, and Alderman Dewey Eckleberry seconded. With a unanimous vote, Attebery was sworn in by City Clerk Tina Hutchcraft. Brad Young was appointed new leadman at the Water Distribution Department, and he replaces Kevin Leonard, who moved to work in the cemetery. Alderman also voted to authorize the Board of Fire and Police Commissioners to proceed with hiring three new police officers and to authorize testing to establish a new eligibility list. The City has three spots open in the state police academy this year. In other action, the council approved spending money for fireworks for Independence Day, with $10,000 provided by the City and $5,000 provided by the Recreation Fund. Corporate support is also a possibility as organizers hope to make the holiday more of an event. Aldermen voted to support the City Band with $7,000. In his report at last night's meeting, Mayor Dreith said he met with three water departments who buy bulk water from the city yesterday. Water rates in the Jasper, New Hope, and Boyleston water districts will go up 7.5 percent, retroactive to January 1st, based on the Consumer Price Index. He also said landowners at 1302 Leininger Road, 205 West Seventh, and 900 Leroy have been given until Friday to clean up properties. He said they have been given fair warning the City will not continue to stand by. The Edwards County High School Music Department will hold its full Dinner Theater event this month for the first time since 2019. hope you guys can hear me. we've heard a number of sirens, a lot of sirens, so we rushed over here to get some idea of what's going on. we were told by multiple witnesses that the free speech rally crowd had been brought out on this side of the commons and had been taken into the streets, put into wagons by the police that had helped them secure safety getting off of the common and that now they're trying to make their way through boston. they've gotten just a little bit past the corner of boyleston and fremont where a huge crowd of counter-protesters had initially been blocking -- maybe even more clear from my view from the street -- they're trying to make their way through boston and safely get these boston rally free speech folks safely through this much, much larger counter-protest on the streets. that that's what witnesses described. i can barely see the top of an ambulance rounding the corner, or a wagon rounding the corner as they move to get these folks
