plants and meatpacking plants. these aren t the most powerful people and where do they turn? you have a right-wing house of representatives and a very right-wing supreme court. exactly and i think this is why so many people feel powerless and ironically some are feeling so powerless that they turn to somebody who looks like a strong man. wright, with a golden toilet. who was actually at this moment giving big tax breaks and promising more tax breaks to the biggest corporations. people need to know that the most important thing to remember is the massive trump tax cut will expire next year. he is not for the regular person. robert reich, thank you so much. that is tonight s reidout . all in with chris hayes starts now. tonight on all in a hero s welcome on capitol hill for the architect of the insurrection. we are 100% unified behind his candidacy. a lot of support. the best speech i ve ever heard. we are incredibly unified in working with president trump to get him elected. tonight, how congressional republicans became accomplices to the criminal ex-president. this is an outstanding group of people. i m with them 1000%. they are with me 1000%. as trump pressures the speaker of the house to overturn his felony conviction. then, new reporting on undisclosed luxury gifts to clarence thomas. and why today s supreme court ruling on abortion pills is just the beginning of the battle, when all in starts right now. good evening from new york, i am chris hayes. a lot has happened on capitol hill since the last time donald trump was there. there was the deadly insurrection he incited. there was the biden inauguration he skipped. there was the record-setting second impeachment he faced and there was a time in the immediate aftermath of all of that, late january, february, march, it seemed he may never be welcome back. but we know how that turned out. today the former president and his 34 felony convictions tracked to capitol hill at the invitation of house and senate republicans where he was received like a different dawn. a crime don. seeking not supporters but accomplices and co-conspirators. they are using us as a bad example of democracy and they are getting away with murder and we are not going to let it happen. you are all elected or you are going to be elected again and reelected. i m with everyone of you and i will be with you always. this is an outstanding group of people. i m with them 1000%. we agree just about everything and if there isn t we work it out. the term kiss the ring has been used so often with trumpet has virtually lost all meaning, but it really was on display in washington today. everything about this appearance was meant to convey the idea of republican party unity and they all performed it strenuously. that unity essentially remaking the party of lincoln into a mafia type operation with him at the top. a man convicted in a conspiracy to pay off former paramore is because he feared their stories would complicate his campaign. a man found liable for sexual assault of exactly the kind he brags about. a man who surrounds himself with lackeys who have been convicted or charged of serious crimes. steve bannon, michael flynn. trump has pardoned or commuted the sentences of many of those men. of course they never snitched. because trump envisions interactions with people in these sort of organized crime transaction terms. you do for me and if i am in a good mood and i am happy with your performance, you will get a cut. the republican party signed up to be part of this. that was on display today with discussions behind closed doors. as sources told reporter jake sherman, trump singled out house republicans who voted to impeach him saying that out of the 10 that impeached only one is left. sherman pointed out that was wrong, there are actually two left, but this was trump basically doing his impression of al capone in the untouchables, pointing out all the people in his gang that flipped on him. a sort of snitches get stitches, stay on my good side message to the foot soldiers. if you think that pressure does not work, look at the outgoing majority leader mitch mcconnell. remember what he said about trump in the aftermath of the insurrection? there is no question, none, the president trump is practically and morally responsible for promoting the events of the day. no question about it. this was an intensifying crescendo of conspiracy theories orchestrated by an outgoing president who seemed determined to either overturn the voters decision or else torch our institutions on the way out. and yet here was mcconnell today. the old man, supplicant, submissive, bending over to kiss the ring. getting a breezy endorsement of trump s capitol hill pilgrimage. reporter: senator how was it seeing the former president? we had a good meeting. we shook hands a few times. he took questions from the audience and it was an entirely positive session. great work, mitch. despite all that plenty of those lawmakers were feckless enough to drip out details of trump s backroom talk to sherman and other reporters because you can never underestimate just how cowardly they are. for instance when trump told republicans today that milwaukee, where we are having our convention, is a horrible city. another source told reporters trump was rambling to the crowd. said it was like, and i quote, talking to her drunk uncle at the family reunion. of course in public those sources will get in line and kiss the ring and give the don whatever he wants. maybe you think this is all being too literal. hyperbolic with the metaphors. crime bosses. surely he does not embrace actual criminal gangs and racketeering and violence as a campaign feature. but this is now part of his campaign. listen closely to this because i still can t get over this. it flew almost completely beneath the radar on the mainstream media. i will include us with this, with the exception of the associated press and a few others. but it was on display at his campaign rally last month in the bronx when he shared the stage with a few supportive guests. where is where is he? come on up, fellas. always going to whisper your accomplishments and shout your failures. trump will shout to the winds for all of us. make america great again. okay so trump is doing a rally in the bronx. to trump those rappers are powerful allies. they are also criminal defendants in a sweeping gang case where prosecutors say they gave material support to a gang during a violent street war with another gang. brooklyn district attorney gonzalez says gang members used more than 30 guns to threaten or eliminate their rivals. in total gonzalez says there was one murder, for attempted murders and 12 nonfatal shootings. what we allege and learned during the course of this investigation was that he used a lot of the money that he earned to help facilitate further gang activity. he encouraged gang members to participate in violent crimes. sheff g, who is the rapper on stage with donald trump that he invited up there. prosecutors allege that he threw a party to celebrate a drive-by shooting in october, 2020, in which one alleged gang member was killed and five others were injured. murder. again, alleged. innocent until proven guilty in our system, but did you hear all of that? imagine what the new york post would have done with this headline if those gentlemen had shown up at a rally for aoc or if president joe biden introduced to them introduced them on stage. but the fact of the matter is that conservatives have a criminal as their preferred nominee and he is embracing a criminal model for the enterprise that is now the republican party. michelle goldberg is an opinion columnist for the new york times. tara, let me start with that. those two individuals on that stage. again, i can t believe it happened and these are not, you know, there are all kinds of ways people have been accused of crime. the system can be unfair, but they are accused of being part of a gang that has killed and shocked and maimed people and they are on stage with donald trump and i don t think it is an accident because i think this is kind of the vibe of the campaign. yeah, i talked about this right after the rally, i think on this network, as a matter of fact. pointing out how despicable this was and how this is seemingly okay now in the law and order republican party. it is such an affront to so many things and it is an insult to the american people that we are supposed to sit here and think this is normal. donald trump is a convicted felon. republicans are welcoming him to capitol hill with a hero s welcome. back to the scene of the crime where mitch mcconnell calls him practically responsible for an insurrection. pal around with accused murderers. this is all normal. it s just fine. it s not. it s not. he gets very frustrating sometimes when there seems to be a moral equivalence made between trump and biden and the way the campaigns are covered. like donald trump did what he did today. he is having these rallies where he is going on random rants about sharks and boats and electrocution. he is palling around on stage with guys who are also alleged criminals. meanwhile president biden is overseas representing the united states with honor and dignity of the g-7 and just entered a security deal with ukraine trying to maintain democracy in europe. there is no moral equivalence. your point about how this slipped under the radar and seems par for the course for donald trump, unfortunately this is who he is. he thinks this is okay and by the way for any black folks who think donald trump is on your side, this is what he thinks of you. black people will like me because i hang around with criminals and they were flashy chains and gold sneakers. it is such an affront, honestly, but this is who donald trump is. michelle, one of the thing that happens and again i use the mafia metaphor, because the unity is so intense. of course behind-the-scenes you have like talking to your drunk uncle. he was rambling. everyone goes and tells reporters and there is this distance. the unbelievable applause and then everyone going to tell the reporter that he was really nuts behind closed doors. right, it kind of brings back memories of 2016 to 2020, where you constantly had republicans in these really degrading displays of fealty and then they would go and try to distance themselves from it when no one was looking. maybe because they think it is all a game and we see how far it goes over and over again. i think after the mafia element, it is not just these two rappers. the trim campaign is leaning hard into mafia metaphors. you have seen the godfather t- shirts and merchandise with godfather iconography. donald trump has compared himself favorably to al capone. recently breitbart ran an interview with peter navarro, former trump official and probably future trump official if trump is reelected. currently in prison in miami. he gave this jailhouse interview boasting about how he gets treated really well because the guards and the inmates love donald trump. sort of how a made demand would be treated if he goes to prison and is still able to slice the garlic really thin. i think what is important is it is not just hypocrisy. not just a defiance of law and order. it is a different model of governance that a lot of republicans have embraced. a hierarchy based on personal relationships that they see as an alternative to technocratic liberalism. yes, mafia state as an aspirational model. and then i never know what s worse, like the people who are pretending or the people who are true believers. i think i know which category marjorie taylor greene is, but let me just play her reaction to seeing donald trump today. i really found his speech to be one of my favorite speeches. he came in, talked to the conference. he was very honest. he was funny. he was joking around constantly with everyone. he was really sweet to me. he said to speaker johnson, okay, you ve got one more seat. you need to be tougher. i was sitting back a little ways. he saw me and he was like hello. he is always so sweet and recognizes me and said are you being nice? he was joking and said are you being nice to speaker johnson? he said okay, be nice to him and i nodded my head. the thing about this is, yes, there is always a duality here. he knows what he is doing and the transactional politics are real and they have all sort of bought into it. it is successful because they are willing to get on board for what it will mean for them. yes of course and to answer your question who is worse, the true believers or the enablers, it is the enablers 100%. the true believers, you can excuse it away that they are so far into it that it is not rational for them. the enablers are the ones who know better and are in a position to say no or to say stop, when no one else will. which is what conservatives were supposed to be doing according to bill buckley, the godfather of modern conservative history. they did not do that. they made a decision that this would be a transactional, politically expedient decision to suck up to donald trump who is a direct and immediate existential threat to our democracy. he wants a club talker see and they are okay with that as long as they get their piece of the pie, but no one is safe under donald trump. he will come for them, too. then we as a country and a democracy have to pay the price. that is why he has to be stopped. go ask mike pence who narrowly avoided correct. getting grabbed by a mob calling for him to be hanged. this is j.d. vance, speaking of people auditioning, to be the next person who may be facing that situation. no real republican with any credibility in the party is still blaming trump for january 6. i think it is a good thing. the republican party is in a good place. i think today was kind of like the button on the january 6 was bad era of the republican party. to whatever extent it was there, today was the definitive marking of the end. right and it has been coming for a while. this is obviously a candidate running extensively on january 6 rioters were heroes and warriors and i m going to pardon the mall. the party has embraced him and embraced that message. j.d. vance is right. there are not very many republicans, if any, who have credibility in their party who will say what mitch mcconnell said after january 6 and what i think most of them know in their hearts to be true. michelle goldberg, tara setmayer, thank you both. when you are the republican pic for president and you want to overturn your conviction for multiple felonies, who do you call? turn shipping to your advantage. with low cost ground shipping from the united states postal service. for all the bravado from republicans insisting that being convicted of 34 felony counts is somehow a good thing, it seems donald trump himself is not a believer. no reporting by political reveals that in the days after his conviction trump made a desperate call to speaker of the house mike johnson. in fact trump was so angry on that call. pleading with the speaker, we have to overturn this. that is not really in the power of the congress, nor should it be. also donald trump was convicted in the state of new york, not the federal system, but that s not stopping them. the morning after the verdict johnson was on trump news making an appeal to the conservatives on the supreme court. i do feel the supreme court should step in. this is unprecedented and dangerous to our system. i think the justices on the court, i know many of them personally. i think they are deeply concerned about that as we are, so i think they will set this straight. yesterday house republican leaders spent the day whipping a bill that would allow presidents charged at the state level to move cases to the federal court. she is a contributing writer at the atlantic where she wrote about trump s absolute disdain for democracy and joins me now. when i saw this i thought that is nutty and not the way any of this works, but that has not stopped things before. i thought that about the mifepristone suit and look how far that god. so it does seem like they are on board, the house republican caucus, on trying to come up with some way of bailing him out. the house republican caucus may be on board, but i don t think that means whatever they are planning will work. if this bill went through i think there would be serious challenges probably made on realism. congress can t just miss around with state courts however it likes and of course he has already been convicted. his options at this point are really appealing through the new york state court system and then the supreme court. there are a handful of legal arguments that he could make on the grounds of federal law, but that will take a very long time and it certainly won t be done before the election. the reporting around the sort of scotus hail mary and this is the daily beast saying that most request for emergency action go to the justice assigned to a particular circuit. in this case it is sotomayor, who has ruled against trump in a most every case before her. the rulebook says the petitioner may renew the application to any other justice of his or her choice and theoretically continue until the majority has denied the application, which means he could keep on the slot machine until the right justice pops up. i m with you again that that seems implausible even by the degree of standards of this supreme court, but that might be true now. all that stands between us and the unthinkable are are those people in power at the high levels going to do the right thing or do something transparently crazy? i do think this is a case for the courts. institutional equities are important to understand. it is also worth noting, the idea that he could ping-pong from justice to justice, that is not how the court tends to do things now. what they usually do is yes the emergency application will go to justice sotomayor and then instead of going to another justice it would go to the full court as a matter of practice and i think it is safe to say they would almost certainly turn it down. this is an extremely conservative court. it is a hard right court, but it is not really a maga court. there have been issues where trump s issues align with those of the conservative justices and uc benefits for him there, but it is really hard for me to see how he could even get to for justices who would be interested in taking on this case right off the bat. he really would be stretching. i totally agree and i think one of the things you see is mitch mcconnell had this sort of speech after january 6 that was basically like this is not the way you do this. basically he was saying you ve got to do the bush league or thing if you want to take an election away, not this january 6 nonsense. do it the bush versus gore way. that is a ludicrous argument and it has done what it needed to do almost certainly in terms of delaying. to call up mike johnson and yell at him to make a magical bill that i am no longer a convicted felon is not going to do the job. right and i think this is what things look like in a federal system. the congress, the president of trump is elected again, they do not have power over what the new york state courts do. alvin bragg, whose office prosecuted this case as district attorney, he was directly elected by the people of manhattan. to some extent i think what trump is really raging against is just the idea that there might be jurisdictions simply out of his control. that is exactly what has him so worked up. quinta jurecic, thank you. coming up, in case $4 million in gifts weren t enough, what s the, it looks like terrence kalama s forgot looks like clarence thomas forgot to disclose another set of gifts. that is ahead. ahead. clean enough for you? the thing that is so striking is the scale of it. we are looking at a picture where harlan crow s private jet, a particularly nice private jet was at the disposal of justice thomas and there are multiple incidents where, for example, flying from washington, d.c. to san jose, california, staying for a few hours and turning around and going back on the same day. that s happened repeatedly. and going from where the jet is based in dallas to d.c. to pick up the justice. it adds to a long list and the picture is a billionaire political donor in a real way subsidizing the life of a justice. they don t make clear the purpose of the trips that included trip from st. louis to montana. location of glacier park international airport. he was scheduled to be in st. louis for a speech. in one instance he flew from the east coast to san jose and returned home later that day. another he took a round-trip flight from washington, d.c. to savannah, georgia. this is how taylor swift or elon musk, that is how they get around. right, the round-trip alone, seemingly for some kind of lunch, we don t know what it was for, still, that could easily cost $100,000 for the flight. probably double the median income that an american makes in a year. it is an extraordinary amount of money. a $100,000 flight. yeah and last week justin thomas amended some prior years disclosure forms to disclose other things harlan crow has paid for. hotels and lodging and vacations. a trip to california. that is the third time he s done that. to be clear, these three no one knew about and no one reported. these were totally new to us. you had no idea? standing is the notion that you have to be a person who has been injured to maintain a lawsuit. it goes back to the concept that the courts can only hear cases or controversies, not imagined grievances. what the court is saying is that the alliance for defending freedom did not have standing to bring their suit and there are a couple of lines. in one place justice kavanaugh says an organization that has not suffered a concrete injury caused by a defendant s action cannot spend its way into s standing by spending money together information and advocate against the defendant, meaning the food and drug administration s action. that is the good part of this. but as you noted, there are little easter eggs sprinkled throughout this decision that are sort of gifts to the antiabortion right. in large part because of one side can t have standing, the other can t either. one of the things this says is that doctors should not presume that they will have standing to advocate for their patients. that usually means something very different for pro-abortion doctors than it does on the anti-choice side. that s a great point. i want to read the standing argument the plaintiffs presented, because it is one of my favorites. this is from the initial, i don t think of this is the scotus brief or district court. doctors lose the opportunity to provide professional services and care for the women and child through pregnancy which causes harms to providers who can no longer care for their patients and bring about the successful delivery of a new life. you deprive me of the joy of delivering your baby, which is a tangible harm to me, ergo i have standing. the standing analysis survived the district court and survived the fifth circuit court of appeals. it is kind of galling and there is a twist on that argument, too. you deprive me of the ability to care for more deserving patients, the women who want to deliver their children as opposed to women who present in the emergency room having had a complication. hypothetically, to be clear. that hypothetically might do so. when i am forced to divert my attention from deserving woman a, to take care of you, morally bankrupt woman b. you can do this through the courts or through the department of justice if you have the teeth to do it. here is justice samuel alito talking about, he does not say the name, interestingly. he just reads the u.s. section and the solicitor general of the united states does say the name. listen. shouldn t the fda at least have considered the application i think the comstock provisions don t fall within fda s lane. the comstock laws, those are passed in the victorian era to outlaw basically all tools for abortion and birth control. and really sending them between states. if you want to talk about zombie laws and we have talked about them a lot on your show and others. these are statutes prohibiting abortion or things that allow people to achieve abortion. it was a zombie law and it was understood for many decades that the comstock law had no effect. why? he was amazing, there wasn t anything he couldn t do or figure out. he would go and learn how to do anything and fix it. it was all about sharing love of christian abata with others and upon hadding those in need and they did that during their time there in haiti. carley: they did just that. ben, the situation in haiti has been going on for sometime now, almost completely out of the news in the united states and given what happened, it feels like it shouldn t be. what are conditions in haiti? it is awful over there and david could probably speak more to that than me being there so long and understand ing the people of haiti and knowing how to speak the language. it is like almost complete anarchy with very little government set up, it makes everything difficult for people there, especially. it is a dark place. i believe that the darkest places need light and davy and natalie were there. carley: david, pick up where ben left off. your son and daughter-in-law were working for a mission that you and your wife started. you have given of yourself and your family, too. tell us about the situation there and what needs to be done to help these people. yeah, it is terrible. we ve been there 26 years, started missions 24 years ago. the last four years have been complete anarchy, we have no current elected officials, they are by a ruling group trying to help haiti. gangs have stepped in, there is no rule of law, and have taken over. killing the president themselves, i don t know the details, i don t know if a gang or mrit cap opposition, but everybody expected international help would step in then and prime minister two years ago begged for international help saying the gangs had become too strong and were getting unlimited supply of ammo in the country and they said police were outmanned and needed help. a year later, it was approved for international force to come in, we are still waiting for them to get there. what we have experienced is great tragedy, haitian people have been experiencing this f forfour or five years. they are affected by gangs and their family members have been killed by it. carley: my goodness, naomi, your son and daughter were missionaries in the truest sense. they were bringing the word of god despite rest unfolding around them. they were in danger, they voluntarily put themselves in that situation for the greater good. i mean, the character your daughter showed at such a young age, how remarkable is that? it is beautiful. it is truly beautiful to see what they did there and how much they love the culture and the people. carley: ben, before i let you go, at the funeral, you spoke about the moment davy asked permission to marry your daughter. apparently, he was sweating, can you tell us about that? Witnessed two very different realities, regardless of how you view these last few months of death and destruction, what transpired if the city raises a series of questions regarding a collective failure to end the war to bring all the hostages home and to stop the indiscriminate large-scale killing of palestinians. saturday over 200 palestinians were killed in israel on a refugee camp according to the government media office marking one of the bloodiest single days we have witnessed in eight months of war. videos of the aftermath show streets littered with debris and dead bodies, some images to disturbing that we can t even show you on screen. one witness described the scene to reuters by saying, quote, it was like a poor movie but this was a real massacre, bombs rained down on nusirat, israeli security forces were conducting a raid in the same area, after the strike, francesca alba knees, the repertoire condemns the mission saying that although she was relieved that four hostages have been released, it should not have come at the expense of 200 palestinians, she called it quote, humanitarian, flaws at another level. today s raid marks the third is really rescue attempt since october seventh. they said a hostage was brought home in the immediate aftermath of the attack. two more men were rescued after forces stormed an apartment in the area and those airstrikes also killed more than 60 palestinians including women and children according to local officials. we cannot forget three is really hostages were killed by the israeli military back in december and that happened after soldiers mistakenly identified them as a threat and opened fire on them despite the fact that they were waving white flags. so for the vast majority of israeli hostages have been released through temporary cease-fires, not wanton destruction and killing of palestinians likely witnessed today. the successful rescue missions few and far between and taking massive tolls on civilians. how many innocent palestinians killed is acceptable to rescue is really hostages especially since more than 100 hostages are still the leaf to be held by hamas and their families also want to see their loved ones home safely. family members of the hostages have been adamant that the only way to return all of those being held by hamas is through a cease-fire deal. however a cease-fire deal remains elusive with some powerful cabinet ministers rejecting any such efforts. the israeli prime minister is now using today s operation to try to ease mounting political pressure on him to resign urging one of his rivals and members of the cabinet who is reported to be quitting, to now reconsider and today may be another test for biden who has pushed for a cease-fire deal and may find the newly emboldened prime minister is inclined to defy the american president just to prolong this war to the detriment of the remaining hostages in palestine. we will follow the story and bring you any news as it develops. from silicon valley to the halls of congress, this week we learned cancel culture is alive and well and some would argue, it s surging and in this country and its targets share one thing in common, we start in the tech world where a software engineer sued mehta, a former employee is now alleging that mehta discriminated against him and unlawfully filed them after he filed complaints that the company was censoring palestinian creators. the complaint says he was simply doing his job since his role including assessing the quality of testing filters as it related to gaza and ukraine. shortly after the piece went live the long reviews website was shut down, according to the publication student editors, they solicited the peace and they followed all of the normal publishing protocols however they say they were then pressured by the board of directors to hold publication of this academic article which accuses israel of committing genocide and upholding an apartheid regime, when the editors refuse the request, the board made up a faculty and alumni from the law school and they shut it down. meanwhile in the west coast, in an industry that has a troubling history when it comes to blacklists, a prominent marketing executive is raising eyebrows over a memo she sent to her staff, ashley margolis, told employees that they should, quote, pause on working with any celebrity or influencer or taste maker posting against israel. according to variety the firm works with many top talent and public relations agency and noted that margolis was particularly adamant about not working with anyone who has used the term genocide to describe israel s actions. margolis declined to comment, taking together, these stories show the high price that is levied by those who are speaking out no matter what field you are in or how accomplished you are in the field, talking about the devastation in gaza could cost you. this stands in contrast with another story from this week, the new york times revealed that the government has been waging a secret influence campaign targeting u.s. lawmakers since october, the campaign used fake accounts and websites to spread content and mainly targeted lack lawmakers. on one hand we have palestinian voices or those who speak up for palestinians fired, cancer, demoted, marginalized or shut down and on the other we have the israeli government, secretly spending millions to amplify their message to the world and this and balance in power, this skewing of the public discourse comes to mind, when you consider this, the israeli prime minister will be coming to washington to address a joint session of congress on july 24th, invited by a bipartisan group of congressional leaders including senator schumer who took to the floor of congress to denounce the prime minister calling him an obstacle to peace and alleging that he s been placing his personal survival ahead of his nation s interest. now, and what amounts to a political win for benjamin netanyahu, congress will be welcoming him with open arms. remember, this is the same man who addressed a joint session of congress back in 2015 for the sole purpose of subverting the nuclear deal that obama and then his vice president joe biden, were negotiating with iran at this. this is a man who has a history of meddling in domestic american politics attempting to tip the scales in elections towards republicans including trump back in 2016 and now this is a man for whom the international criminal court is seeking an arrest warrant for war crimes and the international court of justice possibly believes is committing a genocide in gaza. you may be wondering how it s possible that after all that we have witnessed someone like prime minister benjamin netanyahu is getting the red carpet treatment in washington. when the debate in this country and on this issue is so skewed in favor of one side and voices of dissent are stifled, we end up with an alleged war criminal to be welcomed with open arms by our elected officials to the heart of american political power. this case that you find yourself in, and i believe there is an update, the student editors at columbia law review who have been battling with the say that your piece is up on the website, it s titled as a legal concept. tell me briefly, what was so controversial about this piece that you wrote these things? thank you for having me, i can t sit here in good conscience and talk about my piece as if this was the focal point, here especially today as you reported over 200 people in gaza were slaughtered in the refugee camp. and there is a continuum between the material reality and gaza, the genocide and the silencing of palestinian voices specifically in the u.s. this attempts to silence in this case my voice but other voices, it s a reflection of dissent that s intended to manufacture consent, now, as for the article itself, the board of directors have attached a disclaimer or a statement basically on the home page of the columbia law review, trying to undermine the peace, allegations that were refuted by the student editors and in fact, the editors of the columbia law review have announced a strike so they are striking to protest the boards statement, to protest their infringement of the process and guarantee academic freedom and independence. you think what has happened here, what was done to your piece was meant to be a chilling effect for other you know, academics like yourself who want to advance legal concepts surrounding the rights of palestinians. i asked the same question, i think what is so scary about it, it s a scholarly piece, well substantiated and the fact that the board could not did they tell you any reason why, in either case did anyone come to you and say here is what we find problematic with your scholarship? in this case the board of directors shut down the website and they didn t even contact me up until today. so i haven t officially heard from them. i think it speaks more to their sloppy manner with which they are handling the situation. up until today they could not cite any claims against the peace, we worked on this for over six months editing back and forth and i think it s extensive and i m grateful for the student enters for the work and the professionalism that they extended. shamir, i wanted to talk to you about what you and your client are going through and what you are alleging, can you walk me through the allegations that you and your client are making on behalf of what you are charging meadow with? my client was a coveted software engineer, he was recruited by facebook at meta and he noticed that the account had irregularities, so he started looking into that account and he was told to immediately stop and within a few weeks, he was terminated simply because they said that he might have known, and what s absurd is he has not met with, and the sole basis for the rationale was because my client is palestinian, they must know each other. now apply the same process for any other minority group, it would be the equivalent of firing and african american engineer for trying to fix an issue with for example beyonci s account simply because they are both african american, that is literally their basis, he received excellent performance reviews for every year he was at meta and applauded for going above and beyond, and they simply fired him because they said he is palestinian and he shouldn t be looking at irregularities of another individual whose also palestinian. this is the first time meta has been accused of censoring palestinian voices. what have you learned about the company during this process, do you believe there was based on what you ve been able to learn, a systemic suppression of palestinian voices or do you think they were certain singularly targeting your client. let me provide you one anecdote. i recently learned that meta had an employer reece s fair where the muslim group had watermelons as decorations, and their booth was shut down, even though the flyer for the event itself had watermelons, because it s a summer event. that is the level of silencing that is going on for data employees, i ve heard from a number of current employees, a lot of investigations and another anecdote, they launched hr investigations for employees simply having the palestinian flag in their bio despite other employees having the israeli or ukrainian flags and their bio, this is targeted towards palestinians and these efforts at silencing them are having ripple effects for the palestinians who are still at meta and the purpose of our lawsuit is twofold, one, we want the employees who are still at meta to know that we support them and number 2, we want to send a clear message to meta, we are not afraid of you and you will not silence us. can you tell us about how your client is doing, given all the turmoil that he s had to endure as a result? he is extremely courageous, his name has been all over the media, and i think he is just one of many individuals but he is an individual who decided to speak up despite any ramifications, he s doing okay right now but his primary concern is for his former colleagues who are still at meta and have to deal with these issues on a daily basis. let me ask you about the double standards, when you see what is happening to you and when you hear allegedly, what s happening to, and you see the prime minister of israel getting the red carpet treatment into the halls of power, what, how, how do you reconcile this? you know i think it speaks more, for example, in the case of the columbia review, it speaks more on the board of directors, it s embarrassing on their behalf and i think it s shameful and you know, it exposes that fear in this country and i m proud to speak up and i m proud of my scholarship and i encourage everybody, whatever privilege they have to use this privilege to speak up. these thank you for having me, i m excited to be on here with kimberly, i use the statistic that even with my harvard undergrad and my degrees, as a black woman and i am several times more likely to die of childbirth complications than a white woman with a high school education. that is how deeply embedded systemic racism is in this country and i m so glad the commonwealth research report exposed what the solutions are that we need, there are other high income countries that have you know more midwives and have paid family leave and so when i was giving birth to my children, i was so worried, i was scared because of those statistics because i knew that i profession, my level of education, i income, was not protective. kimberly, you cofounded kindred space, addressing the black maternal health crisis, can you talk about why postpartum care is actually so important and why it is being overlooked, nearly 2 out of three maternal deaths and the u.s. occurred during the postpartum period up to 42 days after birth. right, well thank you for having me here and thank you dr. blackstock for inviting me as well and thank you for talking about postpartum care because i think that people only about complications that can happen with pregnancy and in birth, but as soon as you give birth to a baby you are in your postpartum, and complications can happen immediately in the postpartum or further out when the patient has already been discharged and are at home. and one of the reasons why these complications are so problematic is because we don t have a very good structure in this country to take care of women postpartum, most people will be seen one time by their physician at about six weeks postpartum and unfortunately between birth and six weeks postpartum, there are many things that can arise including preeclampsia, that can present itself in the postpartum period as well as hemorrhaging, that can happen in the immediate postpartum but can also happen when a patient is already home and if she doesn t have access to care, she could die and that is what is happening, and i ve kindred space l.a., one of the things that we have done is to make sure that we had frequent check ins with our clients and we are able to do that because we are not following the insurance company s motto that says we are only going to pay for one visit, and this is part of the reason people don t get seymour often is because folks aren t able to get paid for seeing patients more frequently. let me pick up on that, dr. blackstock. what do you see as other core factors contributing to this lack maternal health crisis. there s a variety of issues that we have identified among them shortages in ob/gyn s but the broader usl care system where it s not accessible or guaranteed by any means, the commonwealth fund report mentions all high income countries it reviewed the sides the u.s. mandate at least 14 weeks of paid maternity leave from work, so it seems to be a total problem on many levels, is that correct? yeah these are systemic issues, policies we know that other high income countries have, and even the fact that kimberly mentioned, the presence of midwives, a lot of people in the u.s., even myself as a physician, i didn t know about the midwife in the child birthing process, i didn t understand that midwives follow birthing people through the entire lifecycle so this is what i did not learn in medical school in the u.s., the birthing process is very medical eyes and that s because of historical policies that pushed out midwives and centered care on physicians and the more physicians that are involved in the process, the more complications can arise, the more c-sections are likely to happen or other types of invasive procedures, so we need to look toward other countries and see how other countries are having a safer process, as kimberly mentioned, the postpartum support, i only had one single postpartum visit after i gave birth to both my children. that s not enough, we know most of those deaths happen in the postpartum period and for the states that need to expand medicaid, it needs to happen and it needs to be able to cover or than a year postpartum so that birthing people are supported. kimberly, i know we were talking about the systemic problems but what do you think needs to be done in order to address and bring an end to this crisis, what is your vision for the kind of healthcare system we currently need and what changes need to be enacted that we can do in the short term to bring the rates down as quickly as possible? that s such a great question and i m all about solutions, for me, it was for me to become a midwife, i had midwives for the birth of my children and i knew the care was much more than i was experiencing in mainstream healthcare and to that end, we need more models such as what we have in california, martin luther king community hospital in south l.a. is a great model, they are it with free lead and they take medi-cal and they are accessible and they have wonderful quality care, collaborative care and they are always under threat for closure, again back to the problem of proper insurance reimbursement, even though their outcomes are excellent, at the top of their game for california, the c-section rate is very low, they have problems staying open because the midwifery model isn t well integrated into the insurance system and they are running at a deficit every year, so they resented solutions, the policymakers need to work with these hospitals and keep this care available to people. dr. blackstock, final five, we are at a point where we are seeing abortion bans being enacted right now how do you see these crises intersect at some point? you put up a tough choice, but i m going to have to go with byron donalds, just for the sheer historiography of what he said like don t get me wrong, both of them are wrong in their framing of this, the ship tried to claim that having a tough jury pool like trump supposedly did in manhattan for his hush money trial is the same as segregation alabama, that s bad, what donalds said was making no sense especially the part that killed me was when he suggested during jim crow, black voters voted more conservatively when a huge part of jim crow was disenfranchising black people from voting at all. so, yeah, i will give it to donalds, because of just how little sense what he said makes. who is your pick? i will respectfully disagree with my friend hayes, and i agree with this, both are bad, both are despicable but i think donalds made a mistake like i think he could take back what he said. i think he wishes he could take it back because it was stupid to reference jim crow, part of what he was getting at was the rise in out of wedlock births among blacks in america, that s a legitimate interesting discussion but he didn t do that and he threw in jim crow and it just messed up and made everything he said wrong. ayman, bishop meant what he said and in essence, what did bishop say? and move over lassie, the amazing story of this truck that crashed down a ravine and the dog that ran four miles to save its owner. announcer: this is nbc nightly news with jose diaz-balart. good evening. there is joy and relief across israel tonight. four hostages who were kidnapped by hamas 245 days ago are now free. this is the moment they returned home, raising their hands in celebration. they were then quickly reunited with family. one of the hostages noa argamani, that s her there seared into the public by this image, now, there is this image, her and her dad, together again. embracing, the daring rescue operation played out in broad daylight. the israeli military releasing these images and while the mission was a success it came at a heavy price with authorities in gaza saying more than 200 were killed as part of the operation. and 120 israelis are still being held hostage. we have two reports tonight, and we begin with raf sanchez in israel. reporter: her screams were heard around the world, noa argamani hands outstretched in terror before disappearing into gaza. tonight, 245 long days later, noa safe and smiling. telling israel s president, i m so happy to be here. she and three other hostages, almog meir jan, shlomi ziv, and andrei kozlov in good health after they were rescued by israeli special forces in a daylight raid in central gaza. this operation required ingenuity and courage of the highest degree. reporter: commandos storming two civilian apartments, finding noa in one, the men in the other. radioing, we have the diamonds when the rescue was complete. a helicopter waiting for noa on the beach in northern gaza. ready to fly her home to safety. and into the embrace of her father yakov. celebrating his birthday with one arm around his only child. the other over one of her rescuers. we first met yakov on october 8. his world crumbling 24 hours after his daughter s kidnapping. tonight, he tells us, i m feeling wonderful. noa s friends at her side. she s amazing. she s strong. she s laughing and smiling and what was the first thing you said to her. just a big hug. and so glad that she s here. reporter: almog all smiles as he hugs friends and relatives and then unable to hold back the tears. while andrei stunned to see the prime minister. and shlomi speaking to his wife for the first time in eight months. in tel aviv, this lifeguard announcing the news of the rescue to a cheering beach. but in gaza tonight, searing grief, the health ministry saying at least 210 people killed by israeli forces during the raid, many of them women and children. this woman says she lost two cousins. they didn t commit any sins, she says. israel s military says it called in targeted strikes to cover the commando s retreat, and joy in israel tinged with sadness as 120 other hostages remain in captivity, including noa s boyfriend avi who was kidnapped alongside her on october 7th while her mother leora is dying of brain cancer. but tonight, her final wish, to see her daughter again fulfilled. and raf joins us now from tel aviv. raf, what does this rescue operation mean for the 120 hostages still being held? reporter: jose, israel s military is acknowledging it won t be able to rescue all of the remaining hostages while hamas is saying today s raid will have a, quote, negative impact on those still in captivity. jose. raf sanchez, thank you. in france today, president biden reacting to news of the hostage release, doubling down on the u.s. commitment to a cease-fire deal. kelly o donnell reports from paris. reporter: standing alongside emanuel macron, president biden today welcomed the rescue of israeli hostages. we won t stop working until all of the hostages come home and a cease-fire is reached, that is essential to happen. reporter: macron added his support for the u.s.-backed cease-fire proposal. that israel has questions about, and hamas has yet to accept. neither leader discussed publicly today tensions with israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu. over the military operation inside gaza, causing civilian deaths and widespread hunger. outside the white house today demonstrations calling for a permanent cease-fire, and release of palestinian prisoners. those protests a sharp contrast to the pageantry of the french state visit. paid respects at the tomb the leaders also paid respects at the tomb of france s unknown soldier. and the home of the brave reporter: a visit that signifies this alliance as president biden spoke today about france as america s oldest friend. much of this visit emphasized strong alliances. we stand as one, our countries are stronger, and literally the world is safer. back now with kelly o donnell traveling with the president in paris. and kelly, what s the latest on the white house s efforts to reach a cease-fire deal? kelly o donnell in paris, thank you. legendary astronaut bill anders who took what is widely considered the most famous photo of our planet has died in a plane crash. his final moments caught on camera as the aircraft he was piloting nose-dived into the water off the coast of washington state. dana griffin reports. a warning for you, some may find the video disturbing. reporter: tonight an ntsb and faa investigation is under way into the single-engine two seater plane crash that killed famed nasa astronaut and former air force major general bill anders. a couple watching wildlife off the coast of san juan county, washington capturing this moment, the 90-year-old pilot, the only person on board, taking a nose-dive. it was inverted, went into this barrel roll loop thing. tried to pull up before it hit the water but it was too low. reporter: the plane crashes into the water, bursting into flames. hours later, anders body is pulled from the water. in 2018 anders talked with nbc s harry smith about his career. probably the world s best fighter pilot. but we don t talk about that. reporter: before astronauts could set foot on the moon the apollo 8 crew first had to prove they could fly round the moon and back. wow, that s pretty. reporter: and it was the photo he took dubbed earth rise that became a part of history. when the earth came up over the lunar horizon, that s when it really impressed me as to how much more delicate the earth was, and colorful. reporter: his family saying in a statement they are devastated. he was a great pilot. he will be missed. nasa administrator senator bill nelson writing on x, anders offered to humanity, among the deepest of gifts, he traveled to the threshold of the moon, and helped all of us see something else, ourselves. i ll keep flying as long as i can crawl in the airplane. reporter: a love of flying and a legacy that went beyond the earth. dana griffin, nbc news. a catastrophe is unfolding in wyoming, take a look at this. it s an astonishing caught-on-camera landslide that erased part of a critical highway. it happened on the popular teton pass outside jackson connecting parts of wyoming with idaho. that stretch is considered a major artery for tourism, commuters and deliveries. there has been a wave of shark attacks in the last 24 hours. two of them just miles apart. two people were seriously injured in those attacks. authorities now trying to determine if they re connected. marissa parra reports from florida.ptured by a florida sp reporter: video captured by a florida spear fisherman showing close encounters of the shark kind, filmed on the same day the beaches nearby him in walton countyflorida closed after back-to-back shark attacks within miles in one day. you don t ever think it s going to happen. it s like crazy. reporter: on friday before 1:30 p.m. a woman swimming near a sand bar, bit in her mid-section. and arm. then half an hour away, two teenage girls seen fighting for their lives after a shark attack. when i looked back over my left shoulder, i saw the water filled with blood. reporter: two doctors visiting florida on vacation saw the scene unfold and jumped in to help. we were able to apply tourniquets and apply pressure, and get the response. it was a team effort. reporter: it s unclear whether it was the same shark in both attacks. extremely unusual for two to happen in the same afternoon within four miles of one another. reporter: statistically speaking attacks by sharks on humans are rare, but friday s florida shark attacks come on the same day that attack reported out of hawaii and after last week s attack in galveston, texas, when a 19-year-old had to fight a five-footer off with her hands. as soon as the shark attacked me my body just naturally started punching it, and it was in the face. i did that. and then it ended up swimming away. going about knee deep. reporter: in florida, walton county officials assess next steps, warning flags line the beaches. is it safe for people to go in the water today? safe is a relative term but i don t think people should be hysterical or paralyzed. only insofar as they need to be aware of their surroundings and look out for each other. marissa is on the beach in florida where one of these attacks occurred. are there any extra precautions being taken there today? reporter: well, jose, authorities say they are watching the shoreline from the land, the sea, the air and they said today they have observed a, quote, notable presence of sharks in the area, specifically bull sharks. but they remind beach goers that sharks are always present here in the gulf. jose? fighting an inflation as it wants to these 272,000 jobs added. i mean, the numbers are misleading as you say, because of the way that the surveys are conducted, payroll obviously focuses on large companies, but the broader household surveys suggest that unemployment is ticking up so why are they not aligned well, i think also there s a couple of things capturing. think about these surveys how they re capturing it, where they re capturing at what time is it being captured? i also think the gig worker is not being captured in this as well, people choosing not to come back into the workforce there s another thing. so where do you categorize those types of folks in those and also companies choosing, think about small businesses if wages starting to go up, they re going to have less employees on w2, which means that they re going to probably go contract or roles and so that gets reported differently as well. and then you think about some of these industry trees where you think of that job growth out of that report, it was health care government, leisure and hospitality these are consistent with the trends that are growing where the other sectors or not and then there is this, i guess confusion on the stock market you ve got the magnificent seven. are these big companies outperforming, making record profits? they re hiring obviously remains strong with small to medium enterprises suffering yeah. no, i think it was clear in this report in the last couple of reports that small businesses are struggling. i think when you mentioned that magnificent seven, you have to call out nvidia of this the record growth big head, and that s holding the market, i would say and the word ai for a couple of those amd and others are pulling the market up so that trend goes hot brings the market go up. now, mind you when the market goes down and typically who are those, who would the tech talks are taking the town with them. is these very, very sudden that you mentioned. so
